This book details the often fascinating lives and careers of every single person who has come second in a US presidential election, a list which includes William Jennings Bryan, Barry Goldwater, Michael Dukakis, Bob Dole and Kamala Harris, as well as a few people who actually served as US president such as Hoover, Ford, Carter and Trump.
It is an interesting book, largely free of any political bias. And yet, I cannot recommend it. It is full of mistakes.
1. In the section on Charles Evans Hughes, Hughes is once referred to as Hayes (a president from 40 years before).
2. The quote at the end of the Cox chapter comes from Hughes not Cox.
3. We are told the film, Gone With The Wind came out in 1919. It actually came out in 1939.
4. Stevenson and Dewey are both described as being born in the 21st century. Neither were even alive in the 21st century.
5. Nixon's date of death is given as June 22nd 1993. He actually died on April 22nd 1994.
All quite small errors gleaned from my casual perusal of the book. There are probably more.
