Passenger by Alexandra Bracken

I love a good time travel story that's clearly been well researched, and that's what Passenger is! I also love how character-driven it is. I really loved all the characters, and the writing was beautiful. Such a good story, and I will be recommending it to all the teens at the library!

I have decided to finally, officially DNF this book. I've tried reading it in every format! When the e-book wasn't working for me I tried the audiobook, when that was unsuccessful, I bought a paperback copy and attempted to read that. In every version I never got through chapter one.

The writing is just too pretentious and metaphoric for my taste, and there's nothing about the exposition that captured my interest. There were many hooks planted to grab the reader's attention, but I genuinely did not care about a single one. It would not be fair to me or this book if I continued to read it, just to break down every little detail that I disliked. Me and this book just aren't a good fit, and so I won't be completing it.

I wanted to love this one because it sounded like one that I would love. However it fell flat for me. I made it halfway through before I couldn’t take it anymore.

I loved passenger! I read and loved Alexandra Bracken's other series "The Darkest Minds," so I knew I'd love this one and I was right! The characters are great and the time traveling is fascinating. Cannot recommend this more.

It is so hard to put my thoughts into words with this book. It was beautiful. The story was beautiful, the writing was beautiful. Honestly, this entire book was beautiful and I really don't think that there is much for me to say other than I really loved this book. This was my first Alexandra Bracken novel and it definitely won't be the last. I am even more excited to read her Darkest Minds trilogy after reading this book because the writing was just splendid!

I really enjoyed the Time Travel aspect within this novel. I was super hesitant about reading it because even though I love time travel (I mean, come on, DOCTOR WHO is my love <3) but there are times where I get super confused with timelines and whatnot. There were times where I got a little confused, but not like I was expecting. I really loved how Alexandra did the time travel. I also really enjoyed the historical scenes within the novel. It was so interesting to be transported in time to see the history of our world.

I really liked the the romance between Etta and Nicholas! It was breathtakingly beautiful. I really enjoyed watching their relationship grow and I really enjoyed watching them complement each other. And it's so great that it's not an insta-love, it's a slow burn romance.

I definitely recommend this book. It's such a great reading experience and you really get thrown into all of the amazing adventures. The only thing is that if you can't handle cliffhangers, don't read this until after Wayfarer comes out, because I am kicking myself for that. I'm usually okay with cliffhangers, but this one is just... ugh brutal. But, even with the cliffhanger, it is an amazingly, beautiful book and you should pick it up!

It feels a little bit like The DaVinci Code with time travel! I like that the main love interest is a PoC and his motivations are based in helping others. Bracken fans will eat this up.

I loved this book. It took a bit to get into but the characters were wonderful and really asked me to care. The setting were know but the insight the author gave to them felt realistic and seen. I have recommended this book to many.

It took me a while to get into this series. Coming off of The Darkest Minds, I was expecting something that would automatically hold my interest. I am glad I stuck with it. Bracken did not disappoint. The cliff hanger will leave you wanting more.

This was my first read by this author and I have to say that I was very surprised at how well researched this book was. You can tell that Alexandra Bracken did a lot of research in order to get her facts straight on this one before diving into it.

If you like time travel and traveling to different part of the world in your reading then this book is for you. You can definitely escape with Etta and travel to many different places in this book. I loved how the task was left up to Etta to figure out how to get this powerful object from falling into the wrong hands. Etta was a very likeable character.

When Etta meets Nicholas, you not only find out that he is a freed slave that has had to work his way up the ranks on the ship he is on, but you get a feeling that there are sparks between these two. I have to say that I have not read many biracial couples in stories but this one clicked for me. They are both strong willed and will speak their minds no matter what. I thought that made both of them even stronger, especially for the time period.

Will Etta be able to keep this precious object from falling into the wrong hands and keep the way open to get back home? Will she risk her relationship with Nicholas? You will have to read this one to find out! A very good opening book to this series. I can't wait to read the next books to see where this goes!

Sadly, I just couldn't get into this story but was shocked at how good the writing was.

I absolutely loved Alexandra Bracken's "The Darkest Minds" trilogy, so I was disappointing that I was unable to get into Passenger. I'd heard so much about it and couldn't wait for it to come to Netgally. Alas, two years later and it's out in paperback and I had to put it down several times.

Though I slightly regret having requested this book, the quality of the writing, nonetheless, is fantastic. Alex Bracken has a way with words, they flow. Instead of choppy sentences, where it almost hurts to read, Alex's writing flows like a river, strong and proud.

I know I'm probably one of the only ones that don't like this book, because I've heard amazing things about this book, but I wasn't able to get into this story. I wanted to so badly and I wanted to love it, but I couldn't. Maybe I'll try again at a different date and see what I think.

I have no idea how I feel about this book. On the one hand, there were moments that I was very intrigued by the worldbuilding. But then two seconds later, I would be bored out of my mind.

First things first: this book is SLOW. Like...really slow. I had no idea you could get away with such slow pacing in a YA book that's marketed as a time travel fantasy. Also, there's really not any action at all. There's maybe 2 pages of a chase scene or a paragraph about the Blitz when they travel to WWII London...and then lots and lots of talking. So. Much. Talking. And feelings! And exposition! And if I hadn't been listening to the audiobook, I definitely would have been skim-reading through half of it.

Passenger is for a certain kind of reader, I think: one who is more interested in character development and intricate details, than any sort of plot. Normally, I'm all for this sort of thing, especially in a historical novel. (And this book feels very much like a historical novel.) But that only works when you're invested in the characters, and sadly, I really didn't care anything about Etta or Nicholas or anyone.

Bracken's writing style is very formal, almost distancing. I never felt rooted in Etta's POV in particular; or maybe Etta was just very stiff and formal. I don't know. Either way, I never clicked with her. Nicholas was easy to sympathize with, but he too felt flat and lifeless. I wanted to like him so much, because he has a really interesting backstory and he's a pirate for goodness' sake, but again, no spark for me.

All that negativity aside, Passenger was good enough that I didn't quit. Again, this might be because I was listening to the audiobook, which allowed me to lose focus and tune in and out at will while still progressing. Also, the book felt very well researched, and despite Bracken's style feeling too formal for me, I can tell that she's a good writer.

I can't decide if I'll pick up Wayfarer or not. I'm curious to see how the story plays out, but I may go in search of spoilers instead of subjecting myself to 500+ more pages of never-ending dialogue and feeeelingsssssss.

The premise of this one sounded good, but I couldn't connect with the characters or the story line. I had to stop reading after a few chapters as I just wasn't interested.

Etta, a violin prodigy is sent to the past where she discovers that she has the power of time travel. Tasked with finding a dangerous and powerful object under threat from a power-hungry villain, Etta will have to work with Nicholas Carter, another traveler under the thumb of the powerful Ironwood family.

I did not finish the book. I hope the final copy was a bit cleaned up, but overall I felt the story had potential, but fell short in the end.

Passenger by Alexandra Bracken is a journey. When Passenger first came out, I tried to read it but it was so slow that I had to give up. I decided to try it again this year. Knowing that the beginning of Passenger was going to be really slow due to the world building, I was more prepared for round two. As the story moved forward I became hooked.

Ella gets thrown into a world that she didn't know existed. Etta comes from a family of time travelers but she was unaware of this unique gift. It is very interesting learning about Etta's ability as she is learning about it. Etta is definitely a strong-willed female. She is bound and determined to figure out this life of hers.

I think Bracken's writing has improved a lot since her Darkest Minds series. She is very descriptive and elegant with her words. Bracken's story and plotting is excellent and it really kept me engaged. I think Bracken did an excellent job with all of the time traveling. Time traveling stories can often be tricky, so the fact that Bracken mad time traveling all her own is even better. I love the unique spin that Bracken used.

All the relationships, both romance and friendship, made the story very interesting. Every relationship is very complex. One minute things are going well and he next it isn't. I am really hoping that Etta and Nicholas don't end u related because I think they are really good together.

Passenger is not a story you will want to miss out on. I think this is Bracken's best work yet. Definitely worth checking out.
