I can see excerpts from this being used by Women's Studies instructors. An interesting look at the power religious women actually have in a world that likes to pretend women don't have any power at all...

Thank you to the publisher for allowing me to read a review copy!

I wanted to read this because I know nothing about the connection between religion and peacebuilding. I grew up in a Christian household but I'm an agnostic. I'm not religious but I find the academic studies of religions fascinating, even though it's not my main research topic. I was hoping to learn more about how women of faith, especially Muslim women, work towards a peaceful and just world.
The book talks about women that are usually not part of discussions regarding peacebuilding as they are doubly excluded: one, from the patriarchal religion they belong to and which doesn't allow them to have functional power, and two, from Western feminism that centers around white feminist thought and that sees their faith as an impediment to "real" feminism and peacebuilding.
I have to admit that religion is a touchy subject for me. However, I know that there are women-of-faith who are modern, anti-colonial and inclusive feminists and being non-religious does not make you better or worse.

The book shows how these women work to decolonise society and peacebuilding, work on uniting communities, help survivors of violence, creating sustainable lives and protecting the environment, and want to create a new democratic system that is essentially anti-patriarchal.

The book covers numerous religions and countries and really does the title justice, illuminating the unseen women that do crucial work and have been marginalised by multiple actors. What I found interesting is how the illuminating part is even critically engaged with at the beginning, saying that while publishing this book it inspires a new generation but also that this invisibility is not only negative, but even positive as it gives protection, allows for mobility and swift change. That perspective is absolutely important because often women who do this work are faced with great obstacles, some of which can be a danger to their and their families lives. That's how powerful patriarchy and toxic masculinity is.

I would recommend this book to everyone because it shows the manifold and wonderful ways how women contribute and shape society positively. After the rampant hatred by right-wing women, it's refreshing to read of empowering and inclusive women who want a better world for everyone, free to explore one's individuality in a safe environment. But the book also gives ideas on how WE can participate in peacebuilding projects and make active change in our communities.

Imagine a world where women are in charge of everything. No wars, no macho micro and macro aggressions leading the way for peace, not war. This books shines a light on that. The future could very well be female

Thank you so much for being willing to grant me access to this book. Unfortunately, life obligations have prevented me from doing so. If my schedule clears, I plan on reviewing this in the future and will post the review on Amazon and Goodreads. Thank you.
