I love Courtney Walsh's books and her sensitivity and depth, and also the courage in tackling the difficult topics. I will gladly read any of her books.
So why three stars? Because while I admire her exploring the very, very sensitive topics of finding out your husband is a jerk and actually divorcing him - that in the realm of Christian fiction - I am also uncomfortable with the novel for several reasons. For first - the silence - and let's be honest here, cowardice and selfishness - of the main male character. How can one be painted as an almost saintly hero full of the unconditional love, if he never did tell Evelyn the truth about her boyfriend/husband? This is a serious weakness of character. And while weakness I can accept (as we are all weak in that or other certain areas of life), I am unconvinced of the authoress's interpretation of this serious omission of truth and in leaving your loved one to enter the life full of lies and live there. Also, no one has never ever said anything about the cheating to Evelyn? Second, the husband is a serious jerk. And while I believe in the existence of people like him, I also feel his "badness" to be too easy way out for the authoress to make people more readily accept the divorce. Third, Evelyn would never get out of the life of pain and lies without the serious therapy or counselling. And she needs this kind of deep work to overcome her issues! While I get her and I have compassion with her, I also think she needs to go to explore her pain (from childhood up) to be able to realize her quite destructive patterns of being willingly blind to reality and to heal from it. Her healing here feels quite rushed.
Having said all that - I very much like the discussion on hard topics of life. Things like these happens between Christians, too. And Ms Walsh is amongst the authors who are not afraid to tackle these realities - and this is a very healing kind of writing. I love the fresh air of her honest books and her willingness to let God enter into the painful, dark stuff of life. We all need it. And we need this kind of writing.
