I've read a few Heath Gudenkauf novels and her writing has certainly grown substantially since publication of this book. Missing Pieces was almost a DNF for me as I struggled to get through it.

Sarah Quinlan thinks she knows her husband Jack and the story of his parents' tragic deaths but another family tragedy brings the Quinlan family together at what was once their family home and the secrets begin to pour out. Sarah realizes she doesn't know Jack at all and there is far more to the story of his parents' deaths than Sarah could have ever imagined.

The buildup in this book was exceedingly slow and the plot clonked along with a few exciting reveals that felt like afterthoughts more than plot points. All of the action was stacked at the end of the book when all is revealed and the real killer comes out of nowhere. Overall, the concept of this novel was great and could have been a very lively story but instead, it fell flat and felt somewhat unbelievable. Elements that could have really built the climax nicely were almost ignored while other details were harped on so heavily that the ending almost didn't fit, just like this novel wasn't a fit for me!

I received a free copy from NetGalley. Part murder mystery, part family drama, how well does she really know her husband of about 20 years if she has never been back to visit his family and see his hometown? Questions the secrets we keep and why we keep them and if we should go hunting for the answers to the secrets others keep or not. It kept the pages turning.

Once again, Heather Gudenkauf proves she is a brilliant author. I often hear of all the other hyped up thriller authors (especially the past few years!) and whenever I do I always have a need to remind people that Heather Gudenkauf has a treasure trove of books that they all need to read if they're looking for a page turning thriller. This novel is no different- it's a page turning fast and twisty suspense.

I was very excited to read this book because I loved "These Things Hidden." This time, we're not taken inside the mind of a child. We're inside the mind of former investigative reporter Sarah Quinlan, whose husband Jack has not been home in decades. Sarah has never met Jack's family, but she's suddenly heading back to Jack's hometown after Jack's aunt has an accident and is left in critical condition.

Sarah soon learns that the stories Jack always told her about his upbringing and his family are not exactly accurate. Because her husband is less than forthcoming about his background, Sarah has to use her investigative skills to attempt to uncover the truth.

While doing so, Sarah meets many intriguing members of Jack's family, some of whom are more secretive than Jack.

This was a solid suspense novel, which had a few surprises at the end. My only criticism is that it was hard to believe that someone who previously made a living using their investigative skills would not have wanted more answers about Jack before many years of marriage.

Other than that, I enjoyed this novel and I thank NetGalley for allowing me to read it.

This was an excellent thriller that kept me guessing and up late reading! Very well written with interesting, well developed characters. A definite turner.

Thank you to Harlequin and NetGalley for an arc copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I enjoyed this murder mystery and found digging through this family history interesting. It was difficult to believe that our main character Sarah knew so little about Jack's family when they were married with 2 children, but I guess that is from the point of view of a "typical" family. It was interesting to see how it would feel to be married to a man that you truly didn't know. On a positive note, Gudenkauf did a fantastic job of throwing you off of the path of the killer. It truly was a surprise when the murderer was revealed!

Recommended for fans of murder mysteries and psychological thrillers.

Heather is a masterful story weaver and this is another suspenseful story from her. She's a very popular recommend among my library users.

I thought this was just OK. Parts were over-written and the plot implausible. While the deaths could have happened as written., the thought that a advice columnist would try to solve the crime without bringing in police is ridiculous. Too many holes because of that.

No one writes a book quite like Heather Gudenkauf. She does the perfect job of making you cry while also keeping you on edge. I'm always blown away by her stories and this is no exception.

This book is really typical of books in this genre. Whodunit, husband may not be as perfect as he seems, protagonist desperately trying to uncover the truth, somebody starts messing with her. Nothing surprising here. The author kept throwing things out there to throw the reader off; some of which never got explained at the end. The writing felt amateurish to me.

Why has Sarah Quinlan's husband, Jack, been haunted for decades by the untimely death of his mother when he was just a teenager? Her body was found in the cellar of their family farm and the circumstances is a mystery. The small farm town of Penny Gate, Iowa, was rocked by the case. Jack was raised in this small town, and for years Jack has avoided returning home until his beloved Aunt Julia is in an accident and hospitalized in a coma. When they arrived home, Sarah and Jack are welcomed by the family Jack left behind all those years ago. There is barely a trace of the wounds that had once devastated them all. When facts about Julia's accident begin to surface, Sarah realizes that nothing about the Quinlans is what it seems. With unanswered questions, Sarah dives deep into Jack's past. Will she be prepared to face the deadly truth she finds? Is her husband of 20 years really who he said he was? A great who done it read!

We all love Heather Gudenkauf's books at my library. This one was no exception. What secrets was her husband keeping? Is he a murderer? A real page turner.

These are the kinds of books that you read and it makes you question everything going on around you. Slightly paranoid as you read, because you wonder what secrets may have been withheld from you about the ones you loved the most. This book is gripping. And makes you thankful for not having a crazy family! To be honest, I despised Jack's character. I can normally put a character aside, remind myself they aren't real, but in this book, I wanted to smack him myself. I know there were reasons secrets were kept, but Sarah was a lot more patient of a wife than I would have been, at least at the beginning. I loved her tenacity as things started to heat up. I love her journalistic side, and how she kept pushing forward although it got dangerous and very personal. Good story. Lots of twists and turns.

Missing Pieces was absolutely thrilling. I had no idea where the story would lead me, and I found Sarah to be both fascinating and inquisitive. The author wove a tale together that was second to none. Can't wait to read more.

I had never heard of the author and thought the description sounded good. The book was a decent thriller with some nice twists. I liked most of the characters with the exception of the protagonist; Sarah. She was a bit much as she was always questioning and pushing where a person with some common sense may have backed off. That being said I do know people like that, so while annoying, her actions were believable. It moved along at a decent pace, and was a decent thriller.

I’ve read a few books by the author and have always enjoyed them so I was keen to read Missing Pieces. However, once it was published I read a few reviews by bloggers that I trust that made me unsure about whether I would enjoy it. I normally try not to let reviews influence me but it did mean that Missing Pieces sank down my tbr pile.

It is unfortunate that I kind of wish that it had stayed there. Although the writing was good and it was easy to read with decent characters the story just did not grab me. I think that the reason is that the book gets straight into the story, there is absolutely no getting to know the characters before they’re thrown into turmoil by the events in the book, this meant that I really wasn’t sure what I thought about the main character, Sarah, although as the book went on I liked her less and less, but was she a reliable narrator? That I didn’t know and I think that the book suffered as a result.

When Sarah’s husband’s Aunt is critically ill in hospital after a fall down the stairs in her home Sarah and Jack head to his hometown, somewhere that he hasn’t returned to since he left twenty years ago. Sarah has never met any of Jack’s family and is looking forward to meeting them, she knows that Jack’s parents died in a car accident when Jack was a teenager and his aunt and uncle looked after him and his sister Amy.

However, soon after they arrive it becomes clear to Sarah that maybe she doesn’t know her husband as well as she thought that she did. This is where things got a bit difficult for me, Sarah’s reaction seemed slightly unusual, as did the actions of one of the locals who decided to help Sarah investigate her husband’s past.

If I’m honest I nearly gave up on this book many times, I felt guilty that it had taken me so long to get round to reading this book to review and that kept me going, it is also quite easy to read so I kept going. I was pretty sure that I’d worked things out long before the end, and I’m giving the book an extra half a star because the ending wasn’t quite what I had expected.

I’m not sure what went wrong with the author for this book, as I said I’ve read other books by Heather that I’ve really enjoyed, but next time I will be less keen to read one which is a shame.

I received this book from the publisher via Netgalley, I was under no obligation to review and all thoughts are my own.
