"The Fire Child" by S K Tremayne is a very standard, thriller that yes, while leading you a very engaging and merry dance, doesn't fully deliver a satisfying ending as some writers give. I enjoyed it, but it won't be one I remember in a years time.

The Fire Child by S. K. Tremayne.
When Rachel marries dark, handsome David, everything seems to fall into place. Swept from single life in London to the beautiful Carnhallow House in Cornwall, she gains wealth, love, and an affectionate stepson, Jamie.
Really enjoyed this book. I did like Rachel. I loved the little pictures at the start of each chapter. 4*.

An interesting read. Quite gripping. The author has brought intrigue and tension to this story. A book I've had on my TBR for some time. Finally finding the time to catch up on my back log of reading. A good book to help my reading mojo.

I had heard great things about SK Tremayne but then I didn't feel that this book ended up being quite what I expected. It was one of those where I reached 80% without it quite being clear where the book was going. I am realising more and more though that I don't gel with modern thrillers and so there was something here that was not quite right for me. I do wonder also if it was the element featuring a child as I can also find those to be quite triggering. I can see that Tremayne is a gifted writer but unfortunately I felt underwhelmed by The Fire Child. I will keep my review private since it was not more positive.

I found this one to be long and drawn out, the story just didn't wow me and I couldn't take to any of the characters , hence why my rating is only 3 stars.

I gave up with this book at 10% never have I hated a book so quickly... It screamed white provialge with Rachel's probem being how she was going to decorate the huge mansion that was now her home! There was a couple of references that left a bad taste in my mouth such as the housekeeper being refred to as then Thai housekeeper and one line saying tags where like little necklaces wore by slave girls..... No thank you 🤢

This thriller has tones of Rebecca by du Maurier when a widowed father remarries and brings his new wife to his old family Cornish estate. Things seem too good to be true as Rachel relishes her perfect life and her adorable step son. This was a good thriller, but I dropped it by one star because there was one huge coincidence that was too unbelievable. **SPOILER** The step son turns out to be her biological son. Really? Until that was revealed, it was a page turner.

2.5stars
this book fell flat, like super flat for me - too much of the mining details and less focus on what happened and then there's the last bit with one of the character's inner voice saying things, and this was an ok read - nothing too thrilling

This was a good read but failed to blow me away as I hoped. Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for this arc in exchange for my honest review.

I wouldn't say this is a psychological thriller in the true sense but more a creepy thriller. I found the start a bit slow but then it got going and it did hold you in suspense. It was quite an enjoyable read and I would read more by S K Tremayne

This is the second book from S. K. Tremayne’s second novel, but I have been hooked since The Ice Twins. Tremayne really knows how to bring fear and suspense through his writing whilst causing an imminent feeling of dread to settle deep within yourself as you work your way through mysteries, truth and the lies that will be found on the way, hidden like nuggets to be discovered.A very good book that cements S.K Treymayne's skill in creating an edge of your seat story, yet again.
The Fire Child follows Rachel as she is moving from city life in London and moves to rural living in Carnhallow Hall. She is determined to carry on renovations that have been started by David's dead wife and also be a mother to Jamie and wife to David. Both David and Rachel begin to experience strange things, apparitions, voices, you name it it is happening.
I love how the author ramps up the tension and throws everything he can to create a ghostly, haunting story. It works so well!
I am looking forward to reading more from S.K Tremayne as the quality and skill of the writing made this book a pleasure to read.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the copy of the book.today foe this review

I really disliked the book finding it just not very good. The characters drove me nuts and I found the plot to be very juvenile.

Wow, just wow! This was not what I was expecting it to be!

When thirty year old Rachel marries David, a corporate lawyer, with a massive mansion of a house in Cornwall, she expects her life to be finally at ease! She is really fond of David’s son, Jamie, a wonderful eight year old boy, who seems to like her too! the two of them develop a very good relationship, which makes Rachel feel she took the right decision.

But then suddenly, Jamie’s behavior changes. There are times that he doesn’t talk to her, he doesn’t even spares a glance for her. With David gone most of the time, in London for business, Rachel’s life takes an unexpected turn. The boy starts to make some very disturbing predictions for Rachel’s future. He claims to have been communicating with his late mother. As times goes by and winter settle’s in, Rachel becomes suspicious of everything around her. Even her husband. She reaches a point to really fear that Jamie’s latest prediction may very well turn out to be true. She fears the words he said to her:

“You will be dead by Christmas.”

Cornwall is the best setting for this story. The old aristocratic area. The house that belonged to David’s family for one thousand years. the Cornish mines with all their dark past, the workers, the deep dark waters and the deaths. The shores and the sharp cliffs and all the rocks and wholes that the mines have dug in the pained land. This whole romantic and yet at the same time Gothic atmosphere build up momentum that is used cleverly in the story, ready to strike at the right time!

The story was a really good one. You have Jamie’s words, about the death by Christmas and you also have the claim that he communicates with his late mother. So you start to think that something isn’t right. Maybe the boy is evil. Maybe his mother never died. Maybe it was David that killed her and now is coming for Rachel. All these and even more scenarios and not knowing what might be the actual case! Only to think of all those possibilities and any other that comes in mind, needs you to invest so much in this book!

It really had me hooked until the end. At some point, I wasn’t even sure who was the villain in the story. I got to see different aspects of the characters’ personality that had me all thinking. Are they hiding something? What really happened in the past? Why something so simple and plain may have so much importance that the author actually spends time and words to mention it? Surely, I’m not missing something here, am I? All those questions were floating up my mind, until the beginning of the end. When every piece of the puzzle started to take it’s place. When I though I knew what was going on, until I realized that was not it.

The big twist at the end is superb! It comes out of the blue, completely! There were some hints, but it never really crossed my minds and that’s a win for the author! Especially the last chapter is one I didn’t see coming! I definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves a good psychological thriller.

Thank you to NetGalley for an advance copy of this book. The views expressed are my personal and honest opinion.

I loved this book right up until the end which was ruined for me by the twist! Everything else was spot on and very well executed. Just so disappointed with the ending. :-(
