The second novel in the Crimson Empire fantasy series. This is a pretty interesting continuation of the story begun in A CROWN FOR COLD SILVER.

As in the first novel, Marshall has a gift for writing very good dialogue and interesting, well-rounded characters. I enjoyed spending time with them, and was invested in their fates. I just wish that, maybe, the story had moved a little more quickly? These are relatively long fantasy novels - by no means unusual for the genre - but I'm not convinced that the plot/story justified the extra pages.

If you enjoyed the first book, then certainly check this one out. It's not my favourite fantasy series, but there are moments of excellence in each of the books.

A Blade of Black Steel is a fitting follow up to the first Crimson Empire book; full of bloody battles and strong females. However, while the writing and setting is rich, the dialogue often comes across as overly simplistic and juvenile. Purna is a strong character, who adds an interesting dynamic to the twisted and surprising story.
