I really, truly wanted to like this...but it just didn't work for me. The story didn't move and I found my attention wandering really quickly.
Sorry for the extended delay in reviewing. I'm working on catching up on my backlist of netgalley reviews.

Despite the intriguing premise and great cover, A Deadly Affection, sadly, just wasn't the book for me.

A Deadly Affection by Cuyler Oberholt was extremely interesting. What would you do when faced with a moral dilemma such as this? I'm not entirely sure I would have gone to suck lengths to proves someone else's innocence no matter what I believed..

The best word I can think of to describe this book is "innocuous". This book feels very innocuous. I've read a lot this borderline-cozy-mystery/historical-fiction genre, so maybe I'm jaded, but this just didn't feel very special. Maybe if you are newer to the genre or have a thing for early 1900's historical mysteries, check this out. For me, it just didn't click. It wasn't bad, hence the 3 stars, but it wasn't for me.

A Deadly Affection provides readers with an insightful view of turn of the century medicine and the challenges faced by women entering into this male-dominated profession. Cuyler Overholt has achieved the trifecta of a fascinating historical novel, a work of subtle but firm social commentary and a mystery made even more compelling because of the emotional investment of the characters. The inclusion of the discovery of Huntington's disease was a particularly fascinating detail that adds depth to the mystery. Similarly, including a protagonist who experiences the first wave backlash against women's inclusion in medical school adds verisimilitude and range to the social commentary. Overall, A Deadly Affection is entertaining, thoughtful, and a thoroughly enjoyable read. I can't wait to see what Cuyler Overholt creates next.

Sadly this is one of those books that I would pick up thinking oh it is going to be great then I picked up and got bored with very quickly. It just did not move very quickly or steady for me. I just was not a fan. It might be great for others but not for me.
