While this is an attempt to showcase a different kind of narrator for women's fic, it feels lacking. I wanted to love this, but it felt like it tried to skew too far to repeating trends of the 00's that we've really moved past as audiences.

While the bits of this diary-like story feel right and funny here and there, this is neither Bridget Jones nor Becky Brandon Bloomwood-like story. The main character feels very shallow, concentrating only on herself and her (perceived) lot in life - and her problems with voluntary unemployment and strained relationships with her mother and (maybe) her boyfriend feel small compared to real life trials. And mainly - the charm of funny, relatable heroines like Bridget and Becky is missing.

Sorry, I tried to read this book a few times, but it just wasn't a good fit for me. I kept losing interest.

Mediocre chick lit about a very aimless young woman named Claire who quits her job to find her passion but then basically does nothing. Claire was a rather annoying character in her aimlessness and extreme self-involvement, but she was also occasionally funny and charming. This book is also written in a very odd style of vignette after vignette, each with their own style - anywhere from a sentence to a few pages - almost like diary entries or blog entries. Luckily I was reading this book on my phone in little bits between doing other things, so it sort of worked for that. I wish this book had more of an ending, and I guarantee that I won't remember it in 6 months or so, but it was entertaining enough for a way to pass the time phone read.

I received this read from NetGalley for an honest review.

This is my first read by Lisa Owens, but it will probably not be my last. Not Working is a great insight into the mind and stresses of someone that has volunteered to quit her job to try to discover herself. It was hilarious and serious for a balanced amount of time.

Thought the writer was an extremely funny person with a great sense of humour - quite a few laugh out loud moments. Probably suited more to younger women though as at times I wanted to slap Claire for being so self obsessed and wanted to tell her to 'man up'!!. I related to the doubts about her career, relationship, family, whether to have children, etc, but at the same time, the book didn't really seem to go anywhere; I wondered if she'd get ill or her partner would leave or something - but no. It almost felt like we'd been left dangling at the end with no real final chapter. Not my favourite book, but quite well written.
