SweetBitter pays homage to those hardworking people in the food & restaurant industry. Danler's wry debut novel is clearly the real deal. She knows the restaurant industry well. This coming -of -age novel stars Jess, a 22 year old who arrives in New York with very limited funds and a desire to escape her mundane, boring life. I expected to really love this book. The prose was very promising, but ultimately I stopped caring about the characters.
Recommended for millennials.

What an interesting read! It centers around a naive, young woman with an unstable background making her way to experience New York City. She lands a job on the bottom rung of a sophisticated, pretentious restaurant. The book traces her exposure to the workings of such a restaurant, including her relationships with fellow co-workers which, inevitably, led to love and all it entails.
I read this book as I was riding a bus to NY City which made it even more enjoyable. I knew many of the locations mentioned which added to the book's energy. Through the skillful writing, Danler was able to convey the emotions of Tess, the main character, so sensitively. Very thought-provoking!
