Well, as far as mystery and thriller is involved this book was well written but for the horror factor? Unfortunately the book didn’t actually creep me enough. Either I have met too many creepier things in my life or the book needs to up the creep factor if that is what they intended to give the readers.

The blurb was what actually pulled me into the book and the more I read I was honestly intrigued by the plot but there was something in the story that made me not completely like the characters. Anna was a bit hot headed and didn’t take advice well and Jed was too elusive in a way with information. He took while to give the necessary facts but expected people to listen to him. My favorite characters without any doubt were Carrie and Ty.

Despite that I really enjoyed the book and would love to see the end of the book and how our characters will fare against the great disaster to befall upon them.

Fab book. I found this book really easy to get engrossed in. I loved the characters. Jed seemed like a true sweetheart and you just knew he was in love with Anna even before he had met her. I would love to read about further adventures of these two and watch how their relationship develop. Would absolutely recommend this to everyone. 5 stars all day

When they come calling by sarah fleming mountford.
Anna is nearly run down by a truck while walking home from her clinic. Jedediah saves her and helps her home. Who is he really?
Why is he there? What or who is after her?
Omg. Absolutely fantastic read. Couldn't put it down. Loved the story and the characters. Apart from the badies. Looking forward to the next one. This is a must read and I would highly recommend this book. Defenetly worth more than 5*.

This book took a wee while to start but I was immediately hooked on the obvious chemistry between Jed and Anna (the main characters).

This is a ghost story without being overly gory or gruesome. Anna is reluctant to admit her powers, just focussing on helping people everyone can see. Jed wants to help her reach her full potential. I loved the setting for the book, taking the story from a busy city to a tucked away cabin. Had me hooked. There were enough twists and turns to keep me turning the pages.

As a first book, I can honestly say I can't wait to read more from Sarah Fleming Mountford. I look forward to the next in the series!!

Anna is a GP running a free clinic where anyone who asks for medical care is treated. As well as being a doctor, she also has the ability to see ghosts. One night a homeless man saves her from serious injury by a speeding truck. She soon discovers a few startling facts about her savior ie Jedediah aka Jed is not homeless, is centuries old and has a sixth sense. The Council sends him from the past with instructions to protect her from some very old, evil and powerful ghosts determined to use her powers for the wrong reasons.
In the nail-biting end, it becomes a fight for life or death and Jed may not be able to help her
I enjoyed this story a lot more than I expected. The storyline was a little different from usual eg, how the relationship/connection between the two of them did or did not develop. A well put together story, which moves along at a very good pace... The ending seemed to leave an opening for a sequel if the author feels that way inclined.
Jed’s sort of old world charm, ruggedness and strength ticked a lot of sex appeal boxes for me!
I recommend this book for anyone who enjoys a good mystery thriller with a little bit of fantasy on the side.

This was different from my usual fare, but the cover and description were enough to intrigue me. Sometimes, a girl just needs to step away from murder and police work. Ghosties are usually a good alternative for me, plus it's almost Halloween!

This wasn't bad, it just didn't really work for me for a couple of reasons.

There was a lot of detail that I ended up skimming over. The writing was good, but I could skim 3 paragraphs and find I missed nothing that held the story together. I want to be immersed in every word, not skipping chunks because they hold no significance to a story.

I will give the author this - the setting is A+, next level. She really does create a sense of a wintery isolated landscape. It's just that everything else in between is very linear and one-dimensional. Conversations are repetitive, questions are asked again and again. Characters that have the answers dismiss the questions again and again, becoming quite tedious in a laboured attempt to delay revelations.

There is no real sense of menace or danger, even though there should be considering the circumstances. One minute people are being attacked by evil ghosts and the next they are making a nice stew for dinner. There are a few "big" moments of action - like a helicopter crashing - but the details are vague; there is no prominence for the reader, meaning we can't feel the tension or fear or the immediacy of such catastrophic, or terrifying, events. To me that's more of an indicator of the author's rookie status - not necessarily bad writing, just inexperienced writing.

I'm not really a huge fan of romance story elements in general, but if the relationship is coming across as a genuine human relationship, I can deal. When it's some fantastical ooey-gooey nonsense? I'm out.

The author did try to explore, what could have been, an interesting juxtaposition between Anna being an atheist, but living in a world haunted by evil and superhuman powers. The author could have really broached that being atheist doesn't necessarily mean a person can't believe in ghosts or energies or whatever you want to call it (it just means they don't believe in a deity overlord of any kind.) She could have explored the concept of an Earth filled with supernatural elements that have nothing to do with the world's religions. It could have been an entirely unexplored facet of the human experience that human being are too caught up in their own stuff to notice. That would have worked for me.

Instead, the ghosties have biblical ties. I can't tell if the author was trying to make a "so there idiots atheists!" point, but it was starting to feel that way.

Not to mention, it's a fictional story. The author is making everything up. It's not like this is a first hand account of what her friend Anna can do. It's made up make believe. Not really the most logical place to be making a sneaky statement about a whole group of humans.

2.5 stars rounded up for this kind of lame ghost story.

This was a great read. I have not read many "ghost" stories lately, but this one had my interest as of the first chapter.
The action, suspense, and story had my interest and had me saying "just one more page".
The characters were well written and believable.

I read the description for the second book before reading this book so I knew a little more going into it than I should have but it only kept me wondering how "that" was going to work out.

The medical aspect of Anna's character was refreshing and enjoyable. Most books in this genre have characters without professional careers. It is nice to see a strong and educated female lead that could hold her own through out the book.

I did not want to put this book down. I also wanted more Jed! I want to know more about him and who he was in the past. I mean 3,000 years of life and that is all we get?! The pacing felt a little off occasionally. I would find times when it was dragging and other times when there was so much going on I was having to re-read what was happening.

Overall, it was a great book and I would recommend it to those that like this genre, you will not be disappointed.

I know other people will give a book a bad/low mark for being a DNF, but as an author myself I know how bad that feels. So I hope my no score is less painful. I’m not going to score this book as I don’t want to give it a bad score - as I don’t feel it deserves one. Nor do I want to give it a high score for the same reason.

Basically, this book was not for me. There is nothing wrong with the writing; I just couldn’t get into it. From other reviews I have read, people have loved this book. To me that proves it’s good… for the right audience.

This does not make it a bad book, and I really want to emphasise this. Despite not liking it and not being able to get into it, I did see potential. I, the reader, and this book just weren’t matched and I refuse to mark it down because of my own faults. :-)
