This book was so long-I found it a little hard to get into, but it was good once I got going. Great historical fiction mystery!

A mystery set in London in 1885- good characters and atmosphere make this a good read for fans of historical fiction.

This title had great writing and a good plot but it just wasn't for me!

I love historical suspense novels especially ones that take place around the time of the infamous Jack the Ripper, give and take a few years.
The story itself is simple enough. William Pinkerton is trying to continue his famous father's work by tracing a thief by the name of Edward Shade. Pinkerton is assisted in this endeavor by Adam Foole.
This novel is so grand in scope and very rich in detail so much so that sometimes it made me lose interest in the story. Information overload? It could be that it is one of those books that you do not binge read but take time to dip into now and then until it is finished. When I did finish the book I was glad I had read it so I think it is one book to take your time with and just enjoy slowly. It is one of those rare books to be slowly savored. Highly recommended to anyone who loves vivid historical mysteries.

Long yes very long but I stayed with it. I stayed with this novel because it drew me in to its wonderfully rich prose and environment. Otherworldly in an earthly way if that makes any sense at all. Its secrets and mysteries are dark and dangerous in a world drawn much the same. Its characters lived in my head long after I put the story down. There are similar formulas out there in previous novels but this story is told and coloured in a way that is entirely original.

This is a great, amazing book and has not been on-shelf at the Library since we purchased it. BY GASLIGHT is atmospheric; has beautifully descriptive writing; personable and real characters; and a devilishly interesting mystery.

I have been able to get many a person to place this title on their holds list, even despite the 700+ page count! This reads similarly to Arthur Conan Doyle, but has a little edge only a modern writer could create. I do tell people to consider this trick when reading so as not to over-tax themselves overly: Every time they shift continents, take a break.
