An interesting and well-written novel.
THE PRACTICAL NAVIGATOR offers readers a good character study, as Michael tries to figure out what his long-absent wife returns. He's made a life for himself and his autistic son, created a safe and content environment for Jamie. What will allowing Anita back into their home and lives do for his son's comfort and peace?

It's a good read. I enjoyed reading about the characters, and Metcalfe's sparse prose is excellent - he manages to do and convey a lot without committing florid prose. Recommended.

Michael Hodge is a down-and-out contractor living in California and raising his autistic son, Jamie, alone. When his long-absent wife Anita resurfaces, unannounced, Michael isn't sure what the future holds or what her intentions are. Michael is faced with the decision to giver her a chance at being a parent, or whether to protect his child from any future hurt. Plot twists, character foibles, and interwoven storylines made this a truly enjoyable read.
