Really enjoyed this book! We actually have bought a few books by Ben Clanton since reading this one. My daughter is a big fan of narwhals. Great family book to read.

Completely adorable! I kind of love it. It has plenty of laugh-out-loud moments and I can see children becoming engrossed in the story. If you want to witness a Narwhal having parties, eating waffles and even using the internet, then this is the book for you

Meet Narwhal and Jelly. Together they form one of the most unlikely friendships that you will ever encounter.
One would think that the fun-loving narwhal would have little in common with a jellyfish. That would be a mistake. They are aquatic friends who share a love for... waffles.
How Clanton ever came up with the idea of this unlikely friendship escapes me. But it works. Completely and charmingly works.

Narwhal decides to form a pod: a group of friends to share a love of waffles and ocean adventures.
All that is needed to become a member of this auspicious group is a tusk tooth. Among all the other ocean dwellers, not one has this distinctive feature. Fortunately Narwhal is equipped with a supply of faux horns so that all of his friends may join in the fun.

Through a series of short stories, told in panel form, readers share in the adventures of Narwhal and his friends. It's the perfect early graphic novel form for young readers, a delightful introduction to some interesting aquatic animals, and an excellent choice for Early Readers.

Filled with friendship, puns, and fun. In the words of Narwhal: Unicorn of the Sea this book is podtastic!

It has been a few years now and I've read most of the Narwhal books, but it appears I had forgotten to review this one. This is one of my favorite children's graphic novel series that I always request on NetGalley if I see a new volume is out (along with Phoebe the Unicorn). In the first book, Narwhal makes a new friend, tries to make his own "pod," and reads the "best book ever!" Other contents include fun facts about narwhals and jellyfish and the Narwhal Song. Definitely a fun series with a lot of laughs and adorable illustrations that can be a "Gateway Book" for children who don't normally like to read or who struggle to read.

Note: I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley. I was not compensated in any other fashion for the review and the opinions reflected below are entirely my own. Special thanks to the publisher and author for providing the copy.

This book tells the story of a narwhal as it tries to become friends with everyone and brings happiness to the world.

Narwhal meets Jellyfish, a somewhat cranky weird animal, along the way, and makes its life a little better one episode at a time.

Although this book tries to make Narwhal this bigger than life character, that makes it exhausting too – it’s like those people who try so hard to look happy and excited that they drain you completely.

But one could also say that Narwhal has the mind of a child, which happens to be the target audience of this book.

Rating: 3.5 stars

I received this book from NetGalley as an eARC in exchange for a review and then check it out from the library because my eARC expired.

This book was cute and fun but way less content than I anticipated. I was hoping for just a little more educational content. The art style was very cute though.

Absolutely hilarious book! All my kids and I cracked up at the banter between Narwhal and Jelly. We have continued in the series and it just keeps getting better. Its reminiscent of Elephant and Piggie books but with a nice splash of sea animal facts.

Adorable book! An absolute favorite of my 6 and 8 year olds, The graphic novel style is a great way to introduce new readers to longer books. The writing is clear and fun, and the storyline has great lessons. Definitely recommend!

I love Narwhal and Jelly! They make me smile, and (while suitable for all ages) are perfect for young readers just starting graphic novels. Please write/draw many more!

Title: Narwhal: Unicorn of the Sea (A Narwhal and Jelly Book)
Author/Ilustrator: Ben Clanton
Publisher: Tundra, 2016
ISBN: 978-1101918265
Price: $16.99
-----------
Summary and Quick Thoughts: Narwhal swam just a little too far from home one day and on that day, they meet Jelly Fish (aka Jelly). Jelly refuses to believe that Narwhal is real and Narwhal refuses to believe Jelly is real. This begins a real friendship between two deep sea creatures.

Narwhal and Jelly is adorable! This is actually not quite a graphic novel or a reader, but a hybrid of both. The book has five super short chapters, including Narwhal and Jelly Fish facts and the adventures under the sea or on the level of Spongebob logic. Chapter one is where we meet our characters and they start their friendship. Chapter two is where we get some really awesome facts. Chapter three is where Narwhal decides he's going to make a pod because of something he read on the Internet (unicorn horns for everyone!). Chapter four, which is really a page, is a song Narwhal sings. Chapter six is where Narwhal shares the best book ever and is probably my favorite part. Readers get to read his book which is an imagination book!

The art and style is reminiscent of Bob Shea and Mo Willems. Readers and kids who want to start reading fewer picture books and more readers or chapters would do well to start here. There are some panels, some full page spreads, and just a mix of things that readers will enjoy.

Overall, if you haven't picked up this series, do. It's perfect for school libraries supporting beginning readers or looking for fun comic book reads for K-3. Public libraries definitely can use this addition in graphic novel or beginning reader collections (mine is cataloged in the graphic novel collection).

Recommended Audience: Beginning readers and up.

Perfect way to balance a nonfiction sea-life unit with some humor and levity.

This was just as adorable as the cover would suggest! Narwhal is the most positive narwhal I've ever seen, and Jellyfish is sometimes skeptical, but always willing to go along with Narwhal's fun ideas. This is organized into three short stories, with "fun facts" and "Narwhal's Song" in between. In "Narwhal is Real-ly Awesome" Jelly and Narwhal meet for the first time and both learn that the other is not, in fact, imaginary, but a real creature! (I too fell victim to the "are narwhal's real?" question for many, many years. But luckily learned the truth before reading this book!) "Narwhal's Pod of Awesomeness" teaches us about friendship and getting along, and how poor Narwhal was lonely without other narwhals around... "Narwhal and the Best Book Ever" was, of course, my favorite of the three, as Narwhal shares with Jelly is favorite book...with a twist!

The whole book was humorous and fun, and I really, really loved the illustrations! I was constantly amazed at Clanton's ability to portray all of their emotions - especially Jelly's! - with their minimal facial features. Those eyebrows do a lot of work!

I can't wait to read more about Narwhal and Jelly's adventures!

Cute children's story of friendship through the adorable narwhal. A creature that doesn't get enough publicity as is.
