The Sound of Us i a young adult contemporary by Julie Hammerle. This book felt perfect for easy fun summertime romances. Maybe because this book takes place at a competitive summer program. Even though all of the characters are way more musically talented and artsy than me, I really enjoyed getting a glimpse into their lives. On one hand, I didn't have very much in common with them to be able to relate right off the bat, but on the other hand author Julie Hammerle did a fantastic job fleshing out each of the characters that I really felt like I got to know them. I found myself relating to them hard core, which is the magic of a good book.

In The Sound of Us we meet Kiki, who is attending this music camp in the hopes that she will be awarded a music scholarship to college. I really loved seeing Kiki go from a secondary friend in her normal life to being thrust into the limelight at camp. It was awesome to see her come into her own. Not to mention there is a summer romance in store for Kiki, because why not?!but the romance is no where near the focus of the story. This is very much a coming of age story for Kiki, which I appreciated. Did I wish there was just a hint more romance, yes of course I did. But the story that we did get in The Sound of Us was a very satisfying tale of Kiki's summer journey. I enjoyed it.

The book did not really work for me. I DNF'ed it. I wasn’t able to connect with any of the many characters in the book and I found myself putting down the book a lot because it was never really catching my attention.

If you liked Virtuosity then you will LOVE The Sound Of Us.

I love a book where you see someone turns into who they really are. I relate to it a lot. Sometimes you have to make big changes and get out of your comfort zone to find who you really are. This is what happened to Kiki. Kiki always played the aunt. She played the lesser role in every aspect of her life. She gets into opera camp and is left to make her own friends and find per place in this world that she doesn’t feel she measures up to.

She meets this magical guy in the basement and they play a song from Project Earth. Life isn’t always so magical but you can always hope for the possibility and that''s exactly what Kiki wrestles with.

Books that focus on music are some of my favorites, and this is no exception! It's beautifully written and has a wonderful story behind it, as well as characters that you cannot help but fall in love with!
