I'm such a huge fan of comics and I love when anyone does a play on the whole concept of Alice and Wonderland. Malice in Ovenland begins with the main character Lily being told by her mother to clean the oven during the summer. It is during this tasks that the real adventure begins. Filled with references to other children's books, Malice in Ovenland is a great book for reluctant readers. It's filled adventure, mystery, and fun as Lily attempts to fight characters who live off of the excess grease in the oven. The story is fast-paced with great illustrations and will keep a child engaged. This book also provides readers with a great message. I definitely would recommend this as a selection for middle grade readers.
