I tried to really enjoy this book, but it just didn't appeal to me as I was reading it. It is VERY well written, but I just didn't love the plot/story.

This was my first experience reading Stefan Zweig and I'm certain that it won't be my last. There is a certain absurd, lyrical quality to his work here, a particular meditation on the life of those who don't/ cannot conform that I rather like. This was an interesting, breezy read, and I enjoyed it very much.

I am well aware of the high regard in which Stefan Zweig is held, and at times I have indeed found his writing absorbing and insightful. But I also find his work uneven and this novella is certainly one that that doesn’t demonstrate the best he can be. It’s the story of an English widow’s obsession with a young Polish Count whom she meets whilst travelling. I found neither character convincing nor the suddenness of the women’s infatuation at all likely. It all seemed rather precious and mannered – and far too wordy. An unsatisfying read.

A classic - an exquisite novella with pathos and words of wisdom. Highly recommended.
