From the very first book I read by Melanie Scott to this one she has never let me down; each bookpurestdelightaward has contained a fantastic romance, some struggles but not so much that it bogs down the story and fantastic characters and Playing Fast offers that and more. A troublesome hero, a beloved heroine, a crush, and instant attraction leads to one hard fought courtship and romance.

I’ll be honest I wasn’t sure how I was going to enjoy this book because in the last book Finn Castro was not my idea of a hero, not one little bit. In fact he was a bit of an a$$hole jerkface. Following some pretty big mistakes and some time away to get his life together, he is sent from the New York Saints MLB team to their triple A team, The Preachers. What I loved was that despite the demotion, Finn arrives in Saratoga Springs ready to work, ready to prove himself again, with a good attitude and knowing that he will not make the same mistakes he made previously. He really redeemed himself in my eyes and more so when he takes immediate interest in Eva Harlowe, the Preacher’s front office manager.

Eva Harlowe thought she was getting over her little celebrity crush on The Saint’s back-up 1st baseman, Finn Castro and then he is sent down to her team and she realizes that “in person” Finn is so much better than she imagined. She knows it’s ridiculous that being 6 years his senior is reason enough not to look at him twice, that an her vow of never dating players she works with and then there’s the whole moving to California thing she has planned, but Finn makes her want the life she’s never allowed herself and getting to know Finn is so much better than she ever imagined.

There was so much to love about these two but I have to give a lot of credit to Finn for insisting that if they become involved they don’t hide it from the players and the organization. Finn was trying very hard to be transparent in all aspects of his life and I admire him for not giving in and making Eva take a chance on them. I was also impressed with how easily Finn adapted to not only his new team but accepting all pieces of Eva’s life including Eva in “mom mode” as she helped one of her sister’s through a crisis. Nothing fazed him and he was steady as a rock throughout and while he had some moments where he was disappointed and sad I loved that he didn’t hold a grudge and knew that what they had was worth it.

There was just so much good about Playing Fast but most of all I loved that this couple was willing to overcome all obstacles including distance to make their relationship work.

Not a homerun for me....Eva & Finn's story was the first I read in this series, so that could be a reason why I couldn't really get into it.

Baseball's hottest baddie Finn Castro has pushed to many buttons and is sent to the minors to get his priorities straight. Eva Harlow has devoted her whole adult life to working for the Sarasota Springs Preachers and raising her orphaned younger sisters. In all her years doing of the right thing Eva's crush on Finn Castro has been a harmless fantasy until Finn walks through the doors of Eva's office and their mutual attraction is ignited.

Playing Fast, book five in Melanie Scott's New York Saints series was quick and well written. Eva and Finn's fall into love was anything but easy and left more than a couple of emotional bruises. Ms. Scott's grasp of her characters weaknesses and how they dictated the flow of the relationship dynamic was handled nicely. The strong physical draw this couple had for each other was evident from the start but really it was the emotional growth of Eva and Finn that drove this story. Memorable characters carry this book to the end for a an all around great read.
