interesting and insightful.
A book that is inspiring and thought-provoking
I am however not sure that everyone will like the format. At times it felt a bit like self-promotion. Though at others it was deeply profound which is why I kept reading

Subtitled The Fine Art of Navel Gazing perhaps? Intellectuals and writers Julia Kristeva and Philippe Sollers dissect their long marriage for the edification of their fans. They wrote the book as their marriage is obviously more interesting than anyone else’s and because “This odd and deeply impassioned adventure deserves, I believe, to be related in detail.” And why is that, I ask, somewhat bemused? As an exercise in narcissism the book cannot be faulted. And as they are such clever people presumably they feel that they can teach something about marriage to the rest of us poor benighted souls. But exactly why I am expected to find them as riveting a subject as they obviously find themselves I really can’t work out. Perhaps I am just not up to their intellectual level…

Having studied Kristeva during my Masters, I was really intrigued by this book. As myself a feminist and interested in semantics, words, language and meaning, this was a fascinating read. I have trouble reconciliating ideas of feminism and marriage and love. But this book, consisting of interviews and essays with both Kristeva and Sollers managed to convey their beliefs and ideas regarding their marriage, love, being a couple, identity, etc. It was difficult to understand at times due to the heavy contrived language of psychoanalysis and philosophy. But it is a short read and is worth it.
