I enjoyed this quick read about the life of Sirus, a little fox terrier who started his life in Germany and had many adventures (not unlike Forest Gump). I recommend this book to all dog lovers.
Thanks to NetGalley and publishers for an ARC of this novel.

I really enjoyed this story! Sirius was a trip and I loved seeing his adventures and how he interacted with everyone. It was a great romp through world war 2 era Germany and then America. I am actually glad it didn't focus too much on the horrid acts of Hitler, and instead focused on the dog. There ae plenty of books that do that era the emotional justice it deserves, but sometimes its nice to just acknowledge it and then move on with the story.

I was definitely immersed the whole time, and loved every moment of it.

Sirius -DNF

Berlin, he was named Levi: a good Jewish dog with a good Jewish name.
When his owners fled to America, he became Hercules: star of the silver screen in Hollywood's golden age.
Then he caught the eye of Hitler, who called him Hansi: a pure-bred lapdog, privy to all the Führer's secrets.
But he was known to the Resistance as Sirius: the insider who could bring peace to a world at war.
SIRIUS: the little dog who almost changed history.

I really wanted to like this book but it was just too much fantasy for my tastes....

I received this ARC for free in exchange for my honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. Thank you NetGalley!

'Sirius: A Novel About the Little Dog Who Almost Changed History' by Jonathan Crown is about a little dog and about how we can find themselves in strange new places.

A fox terrier named Levi at the beginning of the novel lives in Munich with his Jewish family, but this is not a good place for this family while Hitler is in power. The dog gets renamed Sirius in order to protect him and the family that owns him. The family finds themselves in Hollywood during the Golden Age and Sirius finds a career in film, this time with the name Hercules. When Hercules is kidnapped and shipped back to Germany, he gets taken in by none other than Adolph Hitler and renamed Hansi. Will this little dog be powerful enough to help take down this dictator? Will he ever be reunited with his family?

The story is told through the eyes of this little dog, and the little dog is able to understand and communicate with people in a way that is more magical than realistic. This bothered me at first because the subject is less than magical at times, but it grew on me. The story has heart and feelings. Real events and people are interwoven in a way that sometimes feels like name dropping, but mostly just adds to the charm of this book.

I received a review copy of this ebook from Scribner and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this ebook.

Recommended for dog lover (who would dig a dog main character) and readers who live attention to historical context in their novels, though they don't mind some leaps of fantasy.

I'd rate this a solid 3.5. An easy read although contrived. Enjoyable adventures of an endearing dog during Workd World II, and his worldwide journey from Berlin to Hollywood, including a stint with the Ringling Brothers Circus.
