This was a quiet rumination on a life lived in the mountains. The slow and deliberate pacing and phrasing reminded me of Kent Haruf's works. It was an enjoyable character driven short novel and I would recommend it for anyone who wants a quiet, slow but impactful book.

I loved this book. Short and incredibly powerful, each page is packed with dignity and kindness. The simple, slowly evolving plot was just enough to keep you engaged, but this is not a book of plot, this is a story of mood and creeping progress on a simple man. I found this meditative book incredibly powerful. The protagonist takes his pride from his independence, not money or status or romance, and I found this self sufficiency hugely inspiring. The events of the time covered, from the Second World War to the 1970's tourist rush saw huge changes in the rural community of the book - one left behind by the industrial revolution- but this is a story of one man's response. Wonderful.
