Beautifully written, a great story to read to kids, with a historical twist.

This is a fun book! The illustrations are a nice balance of realistic imagery (people & town scenery) and whimsical imagery (horses & lizards with expressive faces). The realistic imagery draws you into the story & communities described, while the whimsical imagery gives it a light, youthful flair.

I wish that the significance of Sundown was explained better, even as an author's note at the end. There is also minimal, if any, reference to God, and that seems bizarre for a story centered around the Jewish Sabbath.

The descriptions of Shabbat traditions, both old & new, and the coming together of the community in the end make this a lovely picture book, whether you are looking for a light multicultural read, a fun community-centered read, or just an enjoyable story.
