Poe is one of my favorite authors of all time and this was an amazing way to revisit some old favorites in a completely new way. I loved the art and the style of the drawing in this.

A huge fan of the works of Edgar Allan Poe, as well as of graphic novels, I jumped at the chance to read and review Poe: Stories and Poems: A Graphic Novel Adaptation by Gareth Hinds. Unfortunately, this was not up to snuff, leaving me feeling incredibly let-down. Though, truthfully, it might simply be that, again, I am not the intended audience.

I have numerous anthologies of Poe’s works which I’ve loved since middle school. Poe’s sublime imagery and cadence resonate strongly. In this adaptation, the works are summarized, possibly to make reading easier as the adaptation also includes a recurring motifs legend to further make the works understandable. As it’s likely this is meant for a wider audience of middle and high schoolers, I feel compelled to give it three stars because it does make it easier to understand, and possibly more fun. However, I cannot give it anything higher simply because the art style does not convey the emotion Poe evokes. It does not feel dark, beautiful, dangerous, or mysterious. Instead, it feels very dated and almost pulpy but with an educational tone.

If you know a student that is struggling with reading, or has Poe as an assignment, definitely try Poe: Stories and Poems: A Graphic Novel Adaptation by Gareth Hinds to whet their appetite, but don’t expect it to be anything more than a synopsis of Poe’s short stories. Additionally, buy the physical copy to ensure the formatting is as it should be (my kindle version was very much disjointed.) If you’re an adult, just buy the short stories or an anthology on its own.

I am a huge fan of Edgar Allan Poe. With several editions all over my home and shared between family members, you cannot tell me anything new with Poe. However, when I request this book, I was excited because I thought it would be something new. This was an error on my part. Once realizing that it was a graphic novel adaption to the classic stories and poems, it became a different story.

The artwork today the stories very well and were details and dark as they should be. It really brought to life what you see when you read anything written by Poe.

Poe: Stories and Poems: A Graphic Novel Adaptation by Gareth Hinds

Star Rating: ★★★★★ 5/5 stars

Format: ebook galley

Summary: A selection of short stories and poems by Edgar Allan Poe presented in graphic novel form.

Review: I received an advanced galley copy of this book from NetGalley for review.

I love the gothic genre, and really no one author encapsulates that genre quite like Edgar Allan Poe. So I was pretty interested in a graphic novel using his stories. I wasn't sure how it would work out but I was willing to give it a shot.

I liked the graphic novel, I thought that the art was nice. That was my main focus while reading, since I already knew the stories. I thought the art style fit with the stories, they fit the moods of them. I liked how in The Cask of Amontillado that the man that becomes trapped is dressed like a jester. It's very fitting for him to be dressed as a "fool".

I was impressed that they included poems and not just stories. I can see how someone would decide to leave those out in favor of focusing on stories. Poems just don't come to the mind when thinking graphic novel but it totally works. I think the nature of Poe's poems definitely help.

I am definitely interested in Gareth Hind's other work. He's done a lot of turning classic literature into graphic novels and I would like to see how those all turned out.

Recommendation: If you are interested in Poe then give this graphic novel a chance.

Although I really like Poe and all of his work, I found this adaptation a little hard to get into due to formatting on my kindle. I felt like if I had a physical copy, I would have enjoyed it more and would have rated it five stars.

One time, a friend of mine told me that if I wasn’t sure to read a classic, it was better if I tried a illustrated version. Therefore, I did that with Poe: Stories and Poems.

I got to say that I wasn’t made to read classic

Gareth Hinds does a beautiful work bringing Poe’s stories alive, so good that some of them made me really anxious.

A must-have for Edgar Allan Poe fans, but I’m not one of them though.

Here we are an adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's best-known works, with the artist-adapter Gareth Hinds translates, The drawing are very beautiful and scariest a little time. I enjoy my reading. I want to read again Edgar Allan Poe's book.

Hinds does an excellent job of capturing the atmosphere of Poe's work. I specially loved The Red Death and The Cask of Amantillado. THe illustrations are grand, atmospheric, and disturbing without becoming simple core. I suspect younger readers will still struggle with this book as the te3xt is Poe's. THere are no concessions made for modern language usage or even stylistic explanation. I could see using this with older students who are struggling with the writing style.

I can’t rave enough about this graphic novel. The artwork is beautiful and the style changes for each work to perfectly fit the mood. It’s an excellent introduction to Poe’s works for the younger set and even includes a theme guide at the beginning of each work. In the back is a piece on each story or poem that gives vital information into both its creation and Poe’s life in general. I can’t recommend this enough!

Five enthusiastic stars.

I have been a fan of Mr Poe's work since I was quite a young child. You can see that Gareth Hinds created this collection from the same root place of inspiration; his love for all things Poe. Lovingly illustrated, stories selected with care, and a nice afterword, complete and compliment G Hinds passion for the works. Recommended.

An exquisite graphic adaptation of several of Poe's most famous short stories and poems, including The Raven, The Masque of the Red Death, Annabel Lee, The Pit and the Pendulum, the Tell-Tale Heart and others. If you've ever had trouble visualizing some of Poe's works (Pit and the Pendulum, I'm looking at you...) then you will definitely like this. The Super Poe Nerd in me absolutely loved this.

'Poe: Stories and Poems' adapted and illustrated by Gareth Hinds is a pretty impressive work. I really liked the illustration as well as the adaptations.

There are 7 stories and poems in this collection. They vary from the lesser known, like 'The Masque of the Red Death' and 'The Bells' to the more popular, like 'The Tell-Tale Heart' and 'The Raven.' The adaptations are superb, using Poe's own words. There is a key at the beginning of the book, so the reader will know if the story features things like insanity, or murder, or creepy animals. I'm not really sure what this key serves to do, but I liked it.

There is an afterword by the author, which includes biographical information about Edgar Allan Poe. The final poem in the book is 'The Raven' and features a character that looks like Poe. The author also cleverly works in images from the preceding 6 stories and poems. I found this a brilliant touch and a true tribute this this master author and poet.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Candlewick Press and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

Beautiful adaptation! I love everything POE and this does not disappoint. The graphics are absolutely spot on and appeals to my dark side. I think it compliments the text very well.

I adore the tales of Edgar Allan Poe, and the illustrations in this graphic novel take on a handful of Poe's tales are beautiful. However, I would not purchase this book for someone who is unfamiliar with Poe's work, as the stories included seem to be summaries of the original works. While I enjoyed this book, it did not meet my expectations, as I am interested in more detail than what was included in Hinds' book. However, the book does inspire me to read such Poe works as The Cask of Amontillado and The Masque of the Red Death, of which I have never read the original versions. I would recommend this book to an established Poe fan.

I've been a fan of Poe's work since we were introduced to the man's work in middle school with 'The Tell-Tale Heart' and have since been fascinated by his life and work. Gareth Hinds has picked four short stories and three poems, all of which are among my favorites of Poe, and adapted them into a graphic novel. The art reflects the eerie mood of the stories and, while abridged, still captures the feel of Poe's words into the illustrations. This collection includes the well-known Poe works: The Masque of the Red Death, The Cask of Amontillado, The Pit and the Pendulum, The Tell-Tale Heart, and poems Annabel Lee, The Bells, and The Raven.

Poe: Stories and Poems is a graphic novel adaptation of seven works by Edgar Allen Poe. Most of these stories and poems will be familiar to readers, yet even as a first introduction to Poe, it is great. Hinds has added depth and details to these vivid tales and brings them to life beyond a personal imagination. The author mentions that the original narrators are not described and encourages readers to think of their own narrators while enjoying his version. A great book for readers new to Poe or experienced with his tales.
