As a 9th grade ELA teacher I teach the Cask of Amontillado every year and I LOVED the graphics with this version! I was very happy with the selection of stories and will be ordering a copy for my classroom!

Once more, Gareth Hinds has done what he does best, at least according to this admitted fan of several of his past graphic adaptations. Yet again he has taken a classic work (or rather several assorted short classics in this case) and made long-revered words come vividly to life through his hand-drawn imagery, which more often than not exceed the scenes that many of us have conjured up in our own imaginations while reading said classic works. He honors Poe's memory well through illustrations that help amplify the suspense, terror, dread, despair, madness, and other emotions that the great American master of the mysterious and the macabre was able to pour into his written creations.

If you're a fan of Poe, you'll enjoy this one. Same dark and disturbing stories with a graphic novel twist.

This was an interesting concept, but the execution didn't really end up being appealing for me! The quality of the illustrations was excellent, and I enjoyed that the author chose some lesser-known works of Poe's to illustrate. However, so much of the creepiness of reading Poe's stories and poems to me is the internal and psychological uneasiness they create ... and having illustrations took away from that.

This was especially evident for me in The Pit and the Pendulum. The horror of that story is in the anticipation, and the unknown and unpredictable environment of the pit. Seeing the plain, stark images that (necessarily) come with the story, laid bare on the page, made for at best uninteresting illustrations and at worst brought me out of that purely-mental reading state that is so essential to the impact of the story.

In contrast, the very first story in the collection (The Masque of the Red Death) was perfectly adapted to the visual-novel style, and I felt the illustrations really added to the impact of the piece. The coloured rooms of the party and the bold bright red of the disease made for a dramatic storyboard, and it was easily my favourite.

I'm sure many readers will love this (it really is well done), but it just didn't mesh with my reading preferences for Poe!

I’m a sucker for Graphic Novels, and this adaptation of Poe’s classic works was absolutely spot on. Hinds’ experience and expertise in adapting the classic really shone through and the result was a text that will hopefully inspire a new generation of horror readers.

The artwork is beautifully rendered with vibrant colours, exceptional expression, and really serves to heighten the narrative. I enjoyed the variety of styles and colour palettes between the stories from the pencil sketches to the watercolours, and from those in varied palettes to monochrome. The distinct style of each story really served to establish the mood making each story or poem distinct from one another.

I am an over the top Edgar Allan Poe fan. From tattoos to a room in my home devoted to the man, I eat up everything that I can with his name upon it. When I saw this graphic novel of Poe's works available for early review, I knew I had to request it.

Poe's work pairs beautifully with the visual design of this graphic novel. The images brilliantly portray the horror, despair, and Gothic feel of Poe's stories, as well as the sadness and longing of his poetry. Since "The Cask of Amontillado" is my favorite Poe story, I was especially interested to see how it would be visually portrayed and I was not disappointed. The horror of the bricking up of the wall is perfectly captured.

I also enjoyed reading how Hinds picked the stories he was going to use and how he researched and drew inspiration for the book.

Stars 5/5 (ARC REVIEW - Release Date Aug 1st 2017) I just couldn't wait to read it LOL Oh what a beautifully dark graphic novel! I just loved it! I will always love Poe's words and this book put his words to art. Amazing art work. We all have our own pictures of stories in our minds but WOW the art was very defined and a wonderful adaptation to the stories. I will definitely be adding a physical copy of the book to my collection as soon as it is released. I would recommend this to everyone.

I am a huge fan of Poe...so I was beyond pleased to receive this graphic novel depicting some of his stories. I swept through it in the matter of an hour. Each depiction was wonderful, light where it needed to be, inevitably dark where it needed to be. Using the image of Poe himself for the depictions of The Raven were spot on. I hope more tales are depicted in this style.
