Things are never what they seem in Perry novels and that's the case here as well. The past has come back to bite Chase. who has been more or less in hiding for many yeas. This is twisty and, oddly for this type of novel, thoughtful.

This was just an OK thriller about Dan Chase (one of many aliases), a 60 year old man retired from army intelligence, who is on the run from sinister members of his past. I spent the first part of the book worrying about Chase’s two dogs. Once they were out of the way, I didn’t really worry about anything in this book. I knew nothing bad was going to happen to Chase. This isn’t that kind of book. Along the way, he acquires a female companion. Her motive for joining him escaped me. Even when the author explained it, it made no sense. This is the second book I’ve read by this author and I have concluded that his books are meant to pass the time on long airplane rides. The author likes plot over character, and isn’t overly concerned with believability. I received a free copy of this book from the publisher.

This was a book that I really did not know if I would like or not when I received it from Netgalley or not. Turns out I really enjoyed it. The story begins with a man named Dan Chase who is 60 years old and appears to be a retiree, but you find out as the story goes along is nothing close to being a retiree. You also find out about his life 30 years ago being with the military intelligence and his mission to deliver money to a person in Libya. He stayed to see if said person did what he promised to do with the funds. When he saw that it was not going to the people that needed the money he took matters into his own hands. Now 30 years later people want him to pay with his life for his choices back then. He has other ideas and makes the people following him pay. You follow him across the country and into Canada. This was a book with a lot of action but also intrigue as well. I liked the characters of Zoe who leaves with him, and Julian. Julian character is questioning why they are after this man, and it turns out he is like him but 30 years later. As Julian finds little bits at a time, you as the reader does as well, and the story begins to fall into place. A very good book.

Thomas Perry is my favorite author . This is his 24th book and is a stand alone. Mr. Perry is a masterful writer of fast paced thrillers and this book kept me on the edge of my seat ! I did not put it down until the end it was completely mesmerizing .
Dan Chase seems to all appearances to be retired . He lives a quiet suburban life with his beloved dogs in a small town. He is highly intelligent and reserved to a fault. enjoying his later years in life. His former life is well hidden beneath the surface and only his daughter knows how deep those secrets lie. The excitement builds as we find out he is a former operative in a mission gone wrong in Libya 30 years prior . . His attempt to right the mission has left him a hunted man. Those hunting him have found him and the excitement begins with explosive results. Once the action begins we see what a great operative he was as he turns back into a soldier fighting for his life. His knowledge of fighting, arms and tracking is done to perfection. He manages it all while forging new relationships and with his two dogs along for the ride and falling in love. .
I could not put this book down. It was enthralling, and more exciting with every page.. Our hero is amazing as he dodges many hired killers. As he returns to Libya to right the wrong , the action is explosive perfection . Perry is the master of writing thrilling scenes and this book is one of his finest. The world of espionage, subversion and chase scenes will keep every reader up late into the night.
Thank you for the advance reading copy of this fine book which did not influence my review. Mr. Perry has outdone himself once again and I only hope this book may turn into a series and a movie.
