This is a great transition book, for those kids moving from picture books to chapter books. Kids at that age get so excited to read a chapter book.

Gertrude and Toby are best friends.. They embark on an adventure to save the Gingerbread Man. Through their adventure, they run into several familiar faces from other fairy tales.

I like that Gertrude and Toby appear to be an unlikely pair- Gertrude is a goat and Toby a turtle. I think it subliminally suggest being friends with those who are different.

This is a cute take on Hansel and Gretel, Jack and the Beanstalk and The Gingerbread Man Fairy Tales. Gretrude is a goat and Toby is a turtle. One day while Farmer Sam was going to market they decide to go on an adventure of their own. They first meet Hansel and Gretel, then the Gingerbread Man who is trapped by the Giant in a cage. With the help of their friends and a flying carpet they figure a way to save the Gingerbread Man. I love the story telling and fantasy in this book. The author is very descriptive in the story telling and it is very easy to follow. This is a great 2nd reader book and a good bedtime story. I recommend it for ages 3-7.

Toby and Gertrude are likeable characters that play well off each other. I think it is good for the younger audiences or for a quick bedtime story. I am sure it grabs a 6 year old but I was not in love with the storyline. The magic carpet coming out of nowhere threw me a little.
