A nicely written historical cozy mystery with a dash of romance, set in 1860's England. I'm sure many readers will enjoy this book, but it was just an okay read for me as it's not quite the sort of story I enjoy - a bit too slow moving. It has a very well thought out descriptive writing style, so a good job re setting atmosphere etc. My thanks go to NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC.

Good historical fjction, This has well done characters and a plot line that takes some twists. Extra point for the storytelling.

I thoroughly enjoyed The Black Orchid, the second book in the Lady Jane mystery series. Set in 1860 England, the story takes place in London, Northumberland, and South America (through letters.) The many plot twists woven into the story had me saying, "Wait. How does this fit in?" As David, Blount and Rooke follow leads in London, Jane is thinking through the clues at Winton Park. For some, the obsession with orchids was all-consuming; for others, something to be exploited.
Now, I want to find the first book and (hopefully) discover how Lady Jane and David met. Annis Bell has created interesting, likable characters with more depth yet to explore.

Historical fiction is one of my favourite genres, especially historical mysteries. Upon recently sorting out my books, I found that I had overlooked leaving a review.
As it's been a while since I finished reading this novel, my brain has gone a little rusty. I can recall that I loved the story and I hope to read the first book of the Lady Jane Mysteries soon.

After believing she had made a very convenient marriage with Captain David Westcot, Jane was astonished, to say the least, to realized she got more than she anticipated, now being a very adventurous woman and one who likes doing her own thing leads to a lot of falling out with the captain but love conquers all. This book is not just about Jane’s and David growing attraction for each other, there is a murder mystery to solve and guess what there are more and more dead bodies appearing out of the woodwork. This romantic murder mystery is very captivating with a dash of sweet and deep loving thrown into the mix, it’s one of those books you just sit and enjoy without any interpretation, I enjoyed reading this book it is well written and the characters are well defined, a great book once again.
