Maybe it's you is mysterious, faith - full, full of immensely diversive feelings, heartbreaking, and redemptive. Mysterious because of her keeping herself a secret in a way - keeping to herself pretty much with those she works with - when Micah asks Sloane to become the face of the Hospital she refuses (for her own reasons - she doesn't trust him - or anyone), faith-ful because GOD is all over the place touching her life, working on her day by day - will she trust HIM? full of immensely diversive feelings because you go on a rollercoaster ride of emotions with Sloane because of her past and her present and you find yourself going through them with her - the author did a magnificent job of making you do that. Redemption - well there really is no need to explain what redemption is - I wont ruin what and why redemption is needed here...you have to get the book and it is so worth it y'all.

A Review

“We see our scars and our flaws …
God sees the child he’s always loved.”

Broken homes and environments come in many shapes and sizes. And walking away from that brokeness can take many different direction. This book explores some of the paths that a group of people, all centered around Sloane Ferrell, a well-trained and experienced ER nurse. The book makes clear that recovery is not easy; but from wherever one starts, the journey to peace, grace, and forgiveness is worth the work. Not everyone will make that journey, some may delay moving forward, but peace, grace, and forgiveness are offered to all who are willing to walk it.

The author is a retired ER nurse, now a grandmother. I do not know to what degree her stories reflect her real life, but they do give the reader a glimpse of the “exciting word of emergency medicine” through the eyes of one who has lived it. The book includes enough romance (nothing explicit) to interest the soft-hearted readers, and enough drama and excitement to interest those looking for more adventure.

This is not the first book by this author that this reviewer has read, but the first in this series. Having said that, the book stands alone and was easily read without any hint of the contents in the two previous books. The book would easily find a place in the community library. Because faith has a role in the story, it could also easily find a place on the shelf of the church library as well.

Maybe It’s You by Candace Calvert tells the story of Sloane Ferrell, an ER nurse with a secretive past. With this book in her Crisis Team series, Candace Calvert weaves an exciting tale that keeps you guessing until the end. The characters struggle with forgiveness and the redemptive power of God to change lives—all while helping patients at Los Angeles’ Hope Hospital. I highly recommend this book! It is a great new book from an author I have always enjoyed. I received a digital copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

If you’re looking for a light-hearted fun romance, Maybe It’s You isn’t the book you’re looking for (but I’d recommend Kara Isaac or Jen Turano). While there is no on-the-page sex or violence, the main character is an ER nurse with a history of hanging out with the wrong people, and a habit of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. You have been warned.

But if you’re on the lookout for a true-to-life medical drama with a side of Christian hope and forgiveness, then Maybe It’s You could be the book you’re looking for. It's the third book in the Crisis Team series, but you don't have to have read the earlier books in the series to enjoy this.

Sloane Wilder has changed her name, address and job to escape her past … but now it seems to be catching up with her. She's working as an ER nurse in LA and trying to stay under the radar, but that's difficult when a nosy reporter sees her rescue a teenage girl, and when the hospital's marketing manager wants to put her face on a billboard as the 'face' of Hope Hospital.

That's what's happening on the surface. Underneath, we come to know Sloane as a damaged person—an alcoholic, and a victim of abuse—who is trying to overcome her past. I think this is the strongest part of the novel, as she gradually learns to believe in God, and believe that He can love even someone like her.

The romance and suspense parts of the plot were also well done. There was an excellent twist at the end (excellent meaning I didn’t see it coming, but it fits in hindsight), and I appreciate that. Overall, an excellent medical thriller with unexpected spiritual depth.

Thanks to Tyndale House and NetGalley for providing a free ebook for review.

Maybe Its You by Candace Calvert

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Story Notes

Candace Calvert's second installment of her Crisis Team series is a gritty, raw and real story that will take readers from the bottoms of despair to the heights of hope and everywhere in between.

Having recently finished Ms. Calvert's Grace Medical series I was very pleased to see that she has another series based in the field of medicine. Her first foray into this series, Step by Step, was an excellent read and I plan to purchase a copy for my shelves soon. I have really enjoyed reading of the volunteers that are involved with the "Crisis Team" responders and how they assist those who experience tragedy. It is a much needed service for so many and it was interesting to see how Ms. Calvert wove it so well into her stories. And with this latest "Crisis Team" story coming out recently I knew I had to share it with others in a review. Sloane "Ferrell" was a semi-main character in Step by Step but Maybe Its You gives readers the ins and outs of her story. Ms. Calvert gave Sloane a tough facade with a "marshmallow center" that will take determined friends and 'suitors' a while to chip away enough to see the real Sloane hidden beneath the layers of self preservation. Sloane has created her own version of Witness Protection for herself after a tragic accident left her and a fellow nurse fighting for their lives. And she's not about to let anyone take away the safety and comfort she has fought so hard for over the past few months. New to the Los Angeles Hope Hospital ER staff, Sloane just wants to be left alone to do her job, enjoy her new home and stay sober - with the help of AA meetings. When the hospital announces a new campaign to find a new "face" for LA Hope, Sloane knows she will have take care to keep herself off the nomination list. She loves her job but values her privacy more. But when the Marketing director, Micah Prescott, sees Sloane's compassionate nature in action, he will do all he can to convince her to become the new face of the hospital. Coming from a family of Christian music singers that experienced a great family tragedy, Micah is seeking to give back to others who are experiencing tragedy by serving on the Los Angeles crisis responders team in conjunction with his marketing work at the hospital. Having been on the receiving end of the comfort and help the Crisis Team provides, Micah hopes to bury his sorrows in his service work and maybe, find a new friend in Sloane. As Micah gets to know Sloane, he starts to feel an attraction for her he has never felt before - if only she would feel the same. It will take time and much conversation for both Micah and Sloane to open up to each other enough to built a precarious relationship. And that relationship will be tested in the most brutal ways when Sloane's past catches up with her in a terrifying and violent way. I'm always impressed when an author tells their character's story in such a way as to make them real and relatable. Its okay to read stories about those who seem to make only minor mistakes in life but I find it much more enjoyable to read stories that have characters I can relate to in some way. No one is perfect and although I may not have experienced all the problems or issues a certain characters has, I nearly always find myself identifying with them in their faith journey. And in this story I found myself mostly identifying with Micah, who had placed those who have trouble with drinking and drugs in a category of evil that he found impossible to forgive. I was convicted, yet again, of my tendency to judge those with more visible problems more harshly that I judge myself - forgetting that my "little white lie" is just as awful as getting drunk or doing drugs - they all cause destruction to relationships. Ms. Calvert had me racing through the pages of this story to find out just how she was going to bring Sloane to her realization of her need for Christ, and Micah to his need to let go of his grudge and forgive. And I found her final chapters and ending to be one of the best I've read - finishing out the story of the characters involved while leaving room to continue the series. Maybe Its You is a story I won't soon forget and will probably re-read multiple times. I will most certainly pass it on to my friends and family.

I was provided both the E-book via Netgalley and the printed book from Tyndale House Publishers due to doubled request. Both were provided to me free of charge in exchange for a fair and honest review. I will receive no fiscal compensation from either company for this review.

4 1/2 Stars!

I really love Calvert's books. The remind me of t.v. medical dramas but with faith and prayer instead of sex and lies. Her books are so uplifting and constantly remind me that our God is a God of grace, forgiveness, and second chances. Her books also remind me of the importance of friendships.

This book deals with the difficult subjects of alcoholism and sex trafficking. Both are topics that desperately need to be brought to light as they are becoming increasingly common and need to be advocated against. I felt both subjects were dealt with very well. Nothing was graphic but it wasn't glossed over either. I loved that Sloane was so dedicated to her AA meetings and I hope that reading this book spurs others on to find a meeting or encourage a friend or family member to.

I also loved the theme of second chances. Sloane is a human just like we all are and has made mistakes but I love that she is able to move past those mistakes. And I love the theme of forgiveness that comes up for quite a few of the characters too.

And don't worry Calvert doesn't leave out the romance. Micah and Sloane continue with what I have found to be tradition in her books of having fun and unique dates. And this one has an especially sweet one you won't want to miss!

I received a free copy of this book from Tyndale. This review is my own honest opinion.

Sloan was asked her relationship with the inmate and it was her stepfather. Sloan had survived the accident that could have killed her. Harper was Sloan’s friend at work - they were both E R nurses. Sloan had changed her name to avoid the dangerous consequences of her last serious relationship. The past taught Sloan low profile meant safety. Sloan’s biggest goal was to speak at Bob- her stepfather’s parole hearing. Close friendships or relationships didn’t fit in Sloan’s plan. The Sloan saw a woman trying to get out of a car and the man wouldn’t let her out the girl fell to the pavement and screamed for help. Sloan went running and the car took off. Sloan got the girl to come into the hospital but only because Sloan had promised the girl food. The girl’s name was Zoey and she thanked Sloan. Miicah saw a request for community Crisis Alert Responders to assist after a violent crime. Two rival gang members and one was already dead. The Responders were trained volunteers who put themselves out there to provide support to any family members and the victims. Micah knew how valuable this service the crisis volunteers provided because for a minimum of twenty hours a month Micah was one of those volunteers. After he worked at the hospital or his days off. After Afghanistan it was very important to find something that satisfied his soul. Maybe it was his own lifeline of hope. Micah knew his day job paid the bills and he better get to it. Now to approach that frosty nurse Sloan. Micah told Sloan not many people would have jumped out to help the girl. No one would understand Sloan’s need to protect and defend people who had been kicked around and victimized. But she did have to help because anything else would be a denial of where she had been and who she was. Sloan changed her name because she didn’t want her ex fiance Paul Stryker to track her down or worse his former associate mobsters to find her. Paul had a large gambling debt to those mobsters and they had also went after Sloan and ran her car off the road. Sloan’s mother had become an alcoholic and sleeping pill addict and made a lot of unwise decisions. Then her stepfather had let her mother drowned and was to blame and Sloan would do all she could to make sure he didn’t get out of prison. Sloan had gotten a letter from Bob from prison that said how much he had changed and wanted to see Sloan. Sloan had seen Zoey again took her eat and then to her cottage so Zoey could shower and wash her clothes. In the morning Sloan would get her a bus ticket . when Sloan got up Zoey was already gone haven stolen some jewelry and one thousand dollars off Sloan which some was her rent due in three days and the bus ticket money. Sloan now had to pick up extra shifts to make up the stolen money. Micah had been on the Crisis Alert Responders for six years now. Sloan saw Micah in Crisis Alert Responders jacket and realized she had been wrong about what she had said to him. Men and alcohol - Sloan couldn’t trust herself with either. But Sloan did have her six months sober chip now. When Sloan was on her way to her cottage Jerry spoke to her he also worked at the hospital he was doing some extra work for her landlady. Sloan felt she was getting too comfortable and making mistakes that would cost her. Then her phone rang and it was Paul her ex he wanted to see her. Paul knew she had changed her name and he swore he paid off the mobsters Sloan hung up her phone. Sloan knew it was too late to hit her AA meeting so she called Micah to meet and get something to eat. Sloan and Micah were two very different people. Micah asked if he could see Sloan again. Micah stirred Sloan’s senses with just the touch of his hand. As far as Micah was concerned Sloan was a: complex, intriguing, cautious and strong woman with firm convictions and a caring heart.
I really liked this story. The story kept my attention all the way through to see what was going to happen next. I felt bad when Zoey took the money from Sloan when she was only trying to help her. But also understood Zoey’s place at that point in her life. I liked the action in this story. I loved the landlady’s granddaughter she just added to the story. I was not happy how Micah let his view of Sloan get distorted but was happy when he went and stood up for her when others wanted her fired. Sloan had definitely learned from her mistakes and was a good person and so was Micah.I also liked the plot it was very good. I liked the characters a lot in this story and the ins and outs and I recommend.

One of my favorite aspects of Christian fiction is the element of redemption. I especially cherish examples of frustrating, train-wreck prone people who experience that soul-deep transformation. Sloane has been a prickly, sometimes offensive character in the wings since the beginning of the series and I was thrilled to get my hands on her story.

The backdrop of unmerciful crimes combined with the compassion of hospital staff and crisis responders and a tentative budding romance creates a rich and flowing storyline that proves hope can indeed blossom in any situation.

I requested the opportunity to read and review this book through the Tyndale Blogger Network and NetGalley. The opinions expressed are my own.

This book was my introduction to Candace Calvert's writing. The book was a good read - full of human sin and error, forgiveness, grace, faith, food, ER drama, and pets. She writes fluidly and captures the reader's attention with her intricately woven plot and strong characters.

I have to confess that it took me three tries to get through the book. Sloane, the main female character, was really hard for me to connect with at the beginning. She is compassionate to her ER patients but quite insulting and almost incomprehensible when it comes to her reactions and interactions with Micah, the main male character. I had to put the book down twice, read something else, and come back to it again because I really did want to find out what happens in the end.

About a quarter way through the book, the plot and characters came together for me. Sloane and Micah's past came flashing through the storyline and once their relationship took off, I got a better glimpse of who Sloane truly is.

Both characters represent a lot of human hurt and suffering, which the author represents quite vividly. The theme of grace and forgiveness was quite front and center and much appreciated.

The romance between Sloane and Micah was sweet through riddled with secrets and misplaced half-truths. But aren't some of our relationships that way? And doesn't God give us His grace to overcome these obstacles? The book definitely made me reflect on my relationships and circumstances and think of how I can receive and show more grace and forgiveness.

I received a digital advance reader copy from NetGalley and the publisher. I was not required to write a favorable review. All comments and opinions are solely my own.

Candace Calvert's most recent novel. "Maybe It's You," is an incredible read!  The readers come so alive and the storyline is gripping, it is hard to stop reading once you start!
Sloane has started over, I mean really started over with a new name, a new place, new everything and to maintain this life she cannot get close to anyone.  However, this becomes challenging when Micah is trying to do his job and Sloane has caught his attention for what he is hoping to do.  Each of these two characters are dealing with issues from their past and are trying to do what is right and live their lives.  Sloane has unfortunately lived a rough life and she cannot be found; these are issues that are sometimes glossed over, but they are so real and it is important that they are addressed as so many are facing rough situations such as Sloane's.
Candace weaves together such a great story and intertwines the characters' lives and really just writes with heart.  I found myself immediately drawn into the story and into the characters' lives that I found myself empathizing with them, cringing, cheering and hoping for a happy ending!

I received this title for review via NetGalley. As part of my Reader Advisory duties, I try to read a variety of genres in order to better recommend books and authors to library patrons. Last year, I decided to give the novels of Candace Calvert a try. They are darker than many Christian fiction titles, with many of the characters flawed and hurt by past choices and relationships. While these are not my favorite reads, I find them to be more believable than the sweet, comfortable novels of other Christian authors. In Maybe It's You, Nurse Sloane Ferrell/Wilder, hiding from a dangerous former lover, seeks to keep her past/ identity a secret from co-workers and the press. She must also deal with the possible parole of the man responsible for her mother's death. Just when she thinks she is safe, she "saves" a young girl from an attempted abduction and is pressured to enter a marketing contest to become the "face" of the hospital. Then she begins to receive phone calls and threats from a man she thought she had left behind. Plot elements in Maybe It's You include murder, alcohol addiction, child abuse, romance, love, forgiveness and redemption. I recommend this title to fans of Denise Hunter, Terri Blackstock and Karen Kingsbury.

Maybe It's You is the third book in the Crisis Team Series. I have read the first two, but don't feel it's necessary in order to enjoy this one. When I met Sloane in a previous book I was dying to learn more about her. She has been through some heavy stuff, and this story like real life, isn't all roses and sunshine. I liked how Calvert wasn't afraid to go where most authors wouldn't. I don't want to spoil anything, so I won't say anything about where that is. That being said I found it interesting to learn more and have my eyes opened to more of what is going on in our country. I found the book hard to put down, and couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next. This book follows Sloane and Micah as they work through some of their past while looking towards the future.

Sloane is a very private person. She has learned how to stay off the map, and wants to keep it that way. Her past was a far from easy one, and she doesn't want any of that to infringe on her new life. She has been at Hope hospital for a while now, and loves helping the people there. That is, as long as they don't get too close. For some reason Micah walks right past her barriers, and gives her hope that maybe life will get better. When numerous tragedies strike, their bond is tested. Will the past overshadow the future they could have?

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys romance with some suspense mixed in. It was fun being based in an ER some of the time. I am in no way a doctor, and found that I understood what was going on, even if I didn't know all of the terms. I loved getting to know Sloane better, and see through to her less tough side. I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion. All opinions expressed are my own.

I had a hard time reading the start of the book but once I got into it and learned the characters I found I couldn't put it down. The story has multiple layers. The only thing that was remotely predictable about it was the development of the relationship between Sloane and Micah. The plot was a lot deeper than I expected at the beginning of the book. I enjoyed pulling back all the layers and seeing the story progress deeper and deeper. Definitely kept me at the edge of my seat. Easy read with Lots of detail. Could be a movie.

Candace Calvert has done it again! Her previous release in this series, Step By Step, was one my highlights of 2016 (in a very busy reading year for me, I might add), and I have been anticipating Sloane’s story ever since. That’s a whole twelve months of anticipation to live up to, people; after a book that’s a pretty tough act to follow. But, by George, she did it. She drew my heart right in and wrung the tears out all over again.

You don’t have to have read the previous book in the series to pick this one up, but reading it first will give you a deeper appreciation of the fact that Sloane’s life has been no bed of roses. She has some pretty tough walls for Micah to breach—for anyone to breach, really—and so their friendship took a little while to get going; but in the meantime, we get a great feel for the complex person that is Sloane Ferrell. She may be cynical and difficult to get to know, but she’s also the first person to go above and beyond the call of duty as a nurse when she recognises another person suffering under the weight of their own irresponsibility.

Micah... What can I say? He melted my heart so many times, which made his character journey—particularly in the last third of the book—especially affecting; because despite his strengths, he lets himself down when it matters most and must confront a weakness he didn’t even know he had. I don’t want to say any more than that for fear of giving spoilers, but I do have to say that his speech to the hospital review panel toward the end had me sobbing, particularly his closing remarks. I’m tearing up just typing about it!

And I think that’s one the things I appreciate most about Candace Calvert’s writing. She builds her characters’ journeys so well, lays the foundations so thoroughly throughout the story, that at the most critical moments, all she has to write is one or two well-chosen lines, and BAM! You’re hit with the significance of the moment without any further explanation. Your heart fills in the rest (and occasionally swells to overflowing, leaking out through your tear-ducts!)

It is impossible not to get thoroughly caught up in this story—and I haven’t even covered the half of it: the teen girl who snags Sloane’s attention, the suspense (which particularly ramps up in the second half of the novel), Marty the kitten, and the many layers of meaning behind ‘Hope’ hospital and its ‘Maybe it’s you’ campaign.

If I don’t stop now, this review might never end, so I’ll just close by saying Maybe It’s You is poignant, heartfelt, and full of hope. I can’t recommend it highly enough!

I received a copy of this book from the publisher. This has not influenced the content of my review.

Maybe It's You is the perfect addition to the Crisis Team series. I love this author's books. Ms. Calvert never fails to deliver a great medical suspense and this book is no exception. The book is well written with a good plot. The characters are well thought out and believable. If you enjoy good suspense books I recommend this book as well as others in the series.

MAYBE IT'S YOU (Crises Team #3) By Candace Calvert

Candace Calvert's work experience as a nurse adds real AUTHENTICITY to this author's work.
Can you really reinvent yourself with today's technology? Emergency room nurse Sloane Ferrell seems to think you can. Sloane was run off the road into an accident being chased by some unsavory characters having to do with her ex-boyfriend Paul Stryker and his past isn't just gambling debts. It is far more sinister. As I was reading this I was thinking sure Sloane can hide out in Los Angeles at the Hope Hospital. New hair, new zip code, new address, new job. I was wondering how you can really live off the grid if you are driving a registered motor vehicle and you have a nursing license and drivers license. So maybe we have to suspend some belief to think that Sloane Ferrell can pull it off with her new name.

Micah Prescott is an assistant marketing director at the Los Angeles Hope Hospital. What I loved about this story is the volunteer work Micah puts in doing Crises care. Notifying loved ones that someone close to them is dead. Holding the bereaved hands and just sitting with them. Trying to be there in any way possible to help the surviving victims. I would like to see that concept in place in my area hospitals. Being a First Responder on the scene is in some ways similar.

Zoey fakes that she is being abducted in the Emergency Entrance in the parking lot. Micah wants to put Sloane Ferell on a billboard for taking heroic measures. Sloane and Micah but heads because Sloane wants her privacy pr
otected at all costs. I liked when I discovered Sloane has a drinking problem. I think this same story can be told by editing out some of the pages. I thought this was sort of drawn out. It might really improve it to shorten this story a bit. 3.5 stars rounded up.

Thank you to Net Galley, Candace Calvert and Tyndale Publishing for providing me with my digital copy for a Fair and honest review.
Recommended if you like medical mysteries. There wasn't really a compelling page turner here.

Medical emergencies, an ex fiance, human trafficking, and an abusive past. Sloane has been dealt a rough life but things are going to change with Micah's help. This book was more than a predictable romance it was a smart and intelligent suspenseful romance. You know Sloane and Micah end up together, that's the HEA, but their journey is long and bumpy. This we my first Calvert book but not my last. I saw it on Netgalley and had to read it, so I got an advanced copy. Looking forward to more of the Crisis Team.
