Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and the author for the opportunity to read this book in return for my honest opinion.

I thought this book sounded pretty good, but I had a hard time getting into it. It started out okay, but I really did not like the main character and I found the book longer than necessary. It was a disappointing read.

I am a long time fan of Deirdre Purcell and loved her earlier work, I have found recent books to be a disappointing.. I read The Husband a few months ago and didn't enjoy if that much. I didn't like the main character Marian very much and Daniel's character wasn't that credible (more like a Mills and Boon protagonist). So much went wrong for Marian and she never seemed to possess any reflection about her choices and their impact on others.

That said some of the supporting characters were very well drawn and I empathised with them- Marian's father, Peter and his mother. Then there was Daniel's big Irish family whom he also did not treat well.
While I didn't like The Husband, it has stuck with me, I'm still thinking about it.

I think one of my problems was with the structure - its feels like a patchwork quilt - starts at the end, goes back to the beginning and does a full circle. The opening scene isn't resolved until the end and there's an awful lot that happens in between. worth reading - i liked it more after i finished than i did during the reading!
