This is the fifth in an intriguing series that began after WWI and continues into the 1940's. Former Scotland Yard Inspector John Madden, long retired, gets drawn into the re-investigation of an old murder case. An anonymous letter questions the guilt of the man who hanged for the crime.

Madden helps track down witnesses from 10 years earlier, including a mysterious part Chinese man who was a key figure when the murder occurred.

This is a nicely done police procedural with a strongly drawn ensemble cast. The plot hangs together pretty well, and John Madden is an appealing protagonist.

I was provided a free ARC via Net Galley in return for my honest review
