Echoes in Death by J.D. Robb

Rereading Echoes in Death reminded me just how masterful J.D. Robb is at blending psychological suspense with procedural precision. This installment opens with a gut punch—Eve and Roarke encountering a traumatized woman in the middle of the road—and the tension never lets up. The case that unfolds is dark and chilling, centered on a predator whose calm, methodical approach makes him all the more terrifying.

As always, Eve's determination to uncover the truth is gripping, and the layers of her character—her empathy, her trauma, her resolve—are on full display. Her partnership with Roarke continues to deepen, adding warmth and humanity to even the darkest parts of the investigation. The supporting cast, especially Peabody, provides the perfect mix of levity and insight, giving the story balance.

This book delivers on every level: high stakes, strong character development, and a truly unsettling villain. It’s a standout in the series and, even on a second read, had me glued to the page. It also made me want to revisit the whole series all over again—Eve Dallas never disappoints.

In Echoes in Death, the 44th book in the In Death series by J.D. Robb once again delivers a tightly wound, emotionally charged entry into her long-running Eve Dallas series. The story kicks off with a jolt as Lieutenant Eve Dallas and her husband Roarke nearly hit a traumatized, bloody young woman stumbling into the road. What begins as an unexpected rescue quickly unfurls into a chilling and intricate case of murder, home invasion, and psychological terror.

Daphne Strazza, the woman they save, has survived a brutal attack, but her brilliant and controlling husband, Dr. Anthony Strazza, has not. As Eve and her team delve deeper, they discover layers of darkness surrounding the seemingly perfect Strazza marriage. Yet, unusually for one of Eve’s investigations, the obvious suspect—the spouse—isn’t the right one. The real predator is still out there, and Daphne’s fragmented memories, calling the assailant “the devil,” only deepen the mystery.

Ms. Robb excels at balancing the procedural grind—painstaking interviews, forensic discoveries, psychological profiling—with deeply human moments, particularly the tender, fierce bond between Eve and Roarke. The case is both a race against time and a psychological puzzle, and Robb keeps the tension high without sacrificing the characters’ emotional depth.

While longtime readers of the In Death series will appreciate the familiar dynamics between Eve’s team members and the ongoing evolution of her character, newcomers can jump into this installment without feeling lost. Echoes in Death is a compelling blend of suspense, character study, and emotional resonance—a reminder of why this series remains so addictive after so many entries.

Echoes in Death
An Eve Dallas Novel
by J. D. Robb

Echoes in Death by J.D. Robb is the 44th installment in the thrilling In Death series featuring Lieutenant Eve Dallas. When Eve and her husband, Roarke, encounter a bloodied, naked woman named Daphne Strazza on the road, it leads them to a chilling murder mystery. Daphne’s husband, Dr. Anthony Strazza, is found dead in his home, and all she can recall about the killer is that he looked like "the devil." As Eve digs deeper into Dr. Strazza’s life, she uncovers a long list of enemies and a complicated web of secrets. The book blends suspense, mystery, and the strong dynamics of Eve's team. Eve and Roarke’s relationship continues to be a highlight, and the investigation is fast-paced and gripping. While Echoes in Death can be enjoyed on its own, it’s best to start at the beginning of the series to fully appreciate the characters and their development. A fantastic read for mystery lovers!
Very grateful to the publisher for my copy through NetGalley, opinions are my own

Eve and Roarke come across a naked young woman when they are headed home one evening, she seems confused and is bloody. Eve immediately jumps into action and rushes her to the ER. They find out her name is Daphne Strazza and her husband happens to be a doctor. Dr. Strazza is found dead in the couples house in what looks like a home invasion. While investigating Eve soon learns that the doctor was not a nice man and has quite a few enemies. All Daphne can remember of the attack was that the man looked like the devil. The couple had a dinner party the night of the attack giving Eve a ton of suspects to eliminate. Follow along and see if Eve can find the devil that turned this couples world upside down. Will the killer be caught or will he get away with murder?

Echoes in Death is book number 44 in the fantastic In Death series by J.D Robb. I love everything about this series from the setting to the recurring characters. I love the dynamics between Eve and her team, and I absolutely love Eve and Roarkes relationship both personally and professionally.
Echoes in Death can easily be read as a standalone story, but I would urge the reader to start at the beginning of the series as it is fantastic!

Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for my copy.

So so so so much rape in this one. Still, it's always good to see the team working together and all of the Eve and Roarke together.

FYI: graphic descriptions of rape, it's not actively happening on the page, but victims telling their story

**Huge thanks to the publisher for providing the arc free of charge**

I read almost everything Nora Roberts, including J. D. Robb. I'm less of a fan of her early works, when she was first learning her craft, but now? If it's her book I'm reading it regardless of genre. I am, however, very much a mystery/detective buff. I read this book straight through, as I usually do her books. Terrific.

A gruesome novel highlighted with determined detectives in search of the rapist, murderer until the grand finale. Love the series and plan to read more of Dallas and Peabody.

I read this series because I love the writing, adore both Eve AND Roarke, and have a special place in my heart for Summerset and Galahad. I mean, how can you not?

To me, this story is really about the human psyche. Man, does that slay me. I love reading how Eve’s mind works. And I adore that Roarke is always there for her. Peabody and McNab are great, too, and always add to the family aspect of this team. Peabody really works well with Eve and although she’d be hard-pressed to admit it, Eve relies on Peabody to keep her anchored in the “reals”.

Great story, wonderfully woven intrigue, and a really creepy villain. I read these books as soon as I can purchase them and then re-read them, over and over again. Loved it.

Another awesome whodunnit, well the devil, of course! This story brings Eve close to her breaking point, but of course she has Roarke, Mira and the crew as support. I had listened to this as an audiobook when it was first published and had to read to refresh my memory. It was just as good written as narrated, so either or both are worth the time spent. Do not miss this, the whole series does not disappoint.

I have not read the earlier books in the series, so I was a bit surprised by the futuristic setting and technology. What was interesting was the cultural references that Lieutenant Eve Dallas knew and didn't know. She knows who Cal Ripken is but has not heard of the Avengers or the Phantom of the Opera. The plot is creative, with plenty of twists that will keep the reader guessing. The killer and killer's motive are surprising, but also somewhat not surprising.

Echoes in Death, by J.D. Robb, is the 44th installment in the author's In Death series featuring Lieutenant Eve Dallas of the New York Police and Security Department (NYPSD). The story takes place in the year 2061, and entirely within futuristic New York City. Echoes in Death opens with a harrowing scene: Eve Dallas and her husband, Roarke, are driving home from a social event, shortly after returning from a much-needed vacation, when they encounter a naked, injured woman staggering through a snowy February night.

The woman, Daphne Strazza, is the victim of a brutal assault, and her husband, prominent surgeon Anthony Strazza, is found dead in their home. What initially appears to be a home invasion gone wrong soon reveals darker layers as Eve uncovers similarities to other crimes. The case spirals into a hunt for a calculating predator whose attacks are both meticulously planned and deeply personal. Eve and her team piece together forensic evidence, witness statements, and psychological profiles to track the killer.

The investigation is intense, and the mystery is engaging, with enough red herrings and twists to keep readers guessing, though some longtime fans might find the perpetrator’s motivations familiar from earlier books in the series. Eve remains a fiercely dedicated cop haunted by her traumatic past. In this book, the case resonates with her own history of abuse, adding emotional weight to her relentless pursuit of justice. Her growth as a character—learning to lean on others while maintaining her tough exterior—is subtle but rewarding.

Eve’s billionaire husband, a former criminal turned legitimate businessman, continues to be a fan favorite. His role in Echoes in Death is significant, as he provides both technological expertise and emotional support. His interactions with Eve, from playful banter to profound tenderness, are highlights of the novel. Familiar characters like Detective Delia Peabody, Eve’s loyal partner, and Captain Ryan Feeney, her mentor, bring warmth and humor to the story.

Dr. Charlotte Mira, the NYPSD’s psychiatrist and Eve's best friend, plays a key role in profiling the killer, while tech genius Ian McNab adds his quirks to the mix. New characters, including victims and suspects, are well-developed, though some feel archetypal within the series’ framework. It has been a long time since I last read this series. Eve hasn't really changed all that much. She still marvels at things like the movie The Avengers, and gets excited over pizza and chocolate. Her relationship with Roarke is solid; he knows when to slow Eve down when it gets too much.

I am a huge JD Robb fan. I was excited to read one of her older works, Echoes in Death. It was a great book!

Eve and her husband Roarke are driving home when a woman stumbles in front of their car. They take her to the hospital and try and make sense of what she’s describing. Eve and her team try and find out what happened. Who is responsible and why did they do this. Another great book by this author!

If you've ever dabbled in J.D. Robb's "In Death" series, then you already know what you're getting into—stylish crime, a futuristic New York, and the duo of Lt. Eve Dallas and her husband, Roarke. "Echoes in Death" is no exception. It's the equivalent of your favorite late-night procedural with a martini twist—sleek, slightly predictable, and exactly what you signed up for.

The story opens like a classic noir scene crashed into a high-tech crime drama. On the way home from a quiet night out, Eve and Roarke nearly run down a traumatized woman who stumbles into the road—naked, bloody, and fleeing something horrific. That "something" turns out to be the murder of her husband, an orthopedic surgeon. The victim is a man everyone seems to dislike. And the witness is a woman too terrified to remember anything but "the devil."

This is where Eve comes in, piecing together the messy truth from a very organized crime scene. We get the whole ride—questioning shady colleagues, decoding a string of social connections, and, of course, uncovering the secrets behind the Strazzas' marriage.

Yes, it's a little predictable. You might clock the killer early on, but honestly? That's never really the point with these books. "In Death" novels aren't about the twists—they're about the world and the characters who keep us coming back.

Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for an advanced reader's copy; all opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Eve is once again trying to find the villain. This time, a victim practically falls in her lap! I love the characters of Eve and Rourke and the determination to find the killer! This series is a win for me!

Eve and Roarke continue with their devoted marital relationship,
Eve is a cop with a difficult past including abuse and Roarke the ultimate super rich businessman.
Together they click as they slowly meld their lives and often work together to solve murders.
They are together at an exclusive party when driving home a woman runs out in front of them.
She has been abused and it is found that her husband was murdered.
As Eve tries to solve the case, old memories and issues arise to trouble her mind and sleep.
Absorbing tale of the solving of a mystery by following the clues.
Adore the dynamic of Eve and Roarke.

There are always monsters, sometimes they even wear a mask.

Echoes in Death is the creepiest book I’ve read in quite some time. Knowing there is a monster out there preying on the innocent and sweet because he’s a coward is quite the picture. Watching his crimes escalate as the team tries to catch him is captivating.

I couldn’t put Echoes in Death down no matter how crazed the monster became.

I would NOT recommend Echoes in Death to anyone who has trouble reading about rapes or bullies. It’s packed full of both. Though the rape (and steam) scenes are mostly undescriptive there is enough there to give one the picture they may find difficult to forget.
