Catalyst is James Luceno doing what he does best--working tightly alongside a Star Wars film to elaborate on the characters and context in ways that are beyond the scope of the films themselves. Here in particular his development of the backstory of Project Stardust and the weird, conflicted relationship between Orson Krennic and the Ersos is very welcome and very strong. In addition to telling an interesting story of its own, Catalyst just plain makes Rogue One better, which is one of the best things you can say about a Star Wars book.
