As a child of the '90s, I grew up with Saved By The Bell. I knew nothing of Peter Engel beyond his name in the credits, but, given the opportunity, I was happy to learn about him. The book leads to what led him to creating Saved By The Bell, his spiritual and personal journey to what became one of the most iconic shows of a decade. It was a great opportunity to get a backstage pass of the show and how it came to be. I did think the title was a bit misleading, I thought it would be more-so about the show and it's cultural significance rather than about Engel's life.

Thank you to Net Galley for the ARC!

Engel walks the reader through the beginnings of his career to present day in this powerful memoir. His perspective on the world is unique and has been shaped by his experiences an those around him. His message in the end is a very timely one that reminds us the importance of friends and family and holding dear to what we believe in.

Like most children of the 90s – if I can be so bold and presumptuous – my weekends were spent watching Saved by the Bell, California Dreams, Hang Time among many many others. The man behind these programs was Peter Engel.

Peter Engel, to me, was just a name. A production company that managed to keep me entertained of a weekend. After reading his autobiography I now know that he was so much more. Engel has led a very colourful life that has saw highs and lows – love, marriage, family, divorce, drug abuse and failure. Throughout it all, we have to nod to his success story and that is making some of the most memorable teenage television of the 90s. Whilst looking back on some of the programs now as an adult they may seem hokey in our media drenched unshockable society but some the earliest life lessons I had came from his television factory.

I Was Saved by the Bell is a really interesting read and gives a backstage pass to the – at times – cruel world – of television.

I Was Saved by the Bell by Peter Engel is available now.

It's probably obvious that I am a huge Saved by the Bell fan since I was eager to receive an ARC of this book. I was surprised to learn, upon reading the book, that Peter gave a full background of himself and his life up to SBTB. it was fascinating to learn how he got to the point of creation for Good Morning, Miss Bliss. Of course, I enjoyed the details about SBTB. Overall, I'd recommend this for any fan of the show and fans of the industry.

I loved this book. I loved, loved, loved this book. Obviously, growing up when I did "Saved by the Bell" was a HUGE part of my early life. I was obsessed (why lie?) and have literally seen every single episode of every single version of this show dozens of times (except The New Class because, really?). When I spotted the title and Peter Engel's name I snatched it up immediately. I love autobiographies/memoirs and considering Peter single-handedly created one of the most formative shows of my youth, there was no way I could go on without reading it.

Engel doesn't really get into anything about "Saved by the Bell" until about halfway through the book which was actually fine with me. At first, I was a little annoyed because that's where I knew him from but this isn't a book about the show, it's a book about Engel himself and I just had to remind myself of that.

Overall, it was a great book and definitely one I'm glad I took the time to read. If you grew up with "Saved by the Bell" I highly recommend picking this one up.

Peter Engel interweaves the story of his own spiritual journey into an entertaining glimpse behind the scenes of a late 80s'/early 90s pop culture staple. An entertaining, light read for fans of Saved By the Bell.

An ok book about the life of a man responsible for bringing Saved by the Bell to your tv. I found the parts about bell the most exciting. Peter had worked some odd jobs that you would not think of before getting to bell. While I enjoyed the book, it was a bit disjointed, and I think the title is a bit misleading-- it is about Peter's life, or just bell.

Anyone who is my age remembers what it was like to anxiously turn on the tv on Saturday morning. Every young girl wanted to date Zack, Kiss AC, run away from Screech and be friends with Jessie, Kelly and Lisa. It was a nice behind the scenes look at a show that helped shape my childhood.

Peter Engel, the creator of the 90s TV show Saved By the Bell, tells of how hard he worked to make it happen, as well as stories from his life and what he learned along the way. Fans of the show will love reading this memoir about Engel and gain behind the scenes insight about Saved By the Bell.
