First published in 1931, when Pauline Leader was still in her early 20s, this is a moving account of a young woman struggling to find a place for herself in the world. Born in Vermont in 1908, she became deaf when she was 12, but in spite of her disability managed to escape to New York aged only 17 and settled amongst the bohemians of Greenwich Village. Isolated and poor, she found comfort in writing poetry and her indomitable spirit comes over loud and clear in this sometimes harrowing but lyrically written memoir.
