Description

The fascinating account of a man in the Witness Protection Program, his experiences as a gay man operating a successful New York City gentleman's club before becoming an unlikely FBI informant, and how it all went wrong.

Meet Michael Blutrich: A mild-mannered New York lawyer and founder of SCORES, the hottest strip club in New York City history.

As a resourceful gay entrepreneur working in an industry catering to heterosexual men, Blutrich employed smart, unconventional methods to build his business' brand. He treated the exotic dancers working in his nightclub more like business partners than employees, and maintained strict focus in an environment known for its powers of distraction.

Under Blutrich's tutelage and business savvy, SCORES blossomed into the hottest club in Manhattan, frequented by sports superstars, Oscar-winning actors, television icons, Grammy-winning singers, and political notables alike. After SCORES benefited from the proceeds of a Florida insurance embezzlement scheme, all Blutrich wanted was to lay low, make the club a success, and leave his past mistakes behind him. But then the mafia decided to make SCORES a new home for its own illegal dealings. And just when success was booming to new heights, the FBI came knocking . . .

In his own self-deprecating voice, Blutrich tells all: From recording armed gangsters in the act of committing felonies and repeatedly evading discovery through amazing stealth to enduring a psychotic break from the imposed pressures and losing everything in the name of earning redemption.

“A fascinating, funny, and, at times, frightening tale of strippers, money, and the mob by one of the FBI’s most unlikely informants ever!” —Anderson Cooper

“Scores is a compelling true crime book that takes readers on a wild ride. This book has it all—mobsters, strippers, extortion, G-men, and one unlikely FBI informant. Michael Blutrich has told a riveting tale that will keep readers entertained and enthralled.” —Miles Corwin, author of Homicide Special

“In Scores, we finally have the definitive insider memoir of the club that changed New York City nightlife forever. The book is a blockbuster ride revealing secrets held close since the 1990s.”
—Harvey Osher, Scores Owner, 1998–2008

“Michael’s story is a riveting window into the secret world of FBI undercover cooperation by a prominent NYC lawyer against the Mafia. As Michael’s lawyer, I was present for many of the events he describes, and, unbelievable as it may seem, his story is true. His case is like no other I’ve encountered in my 40-year career, and his book will become an instant classic. Even knowing how it would end, I couldn’t put the book down until the final page.” —Morris “Sandy” Weinberg, Jr., partner, Zuckerman Spaeder LLP, Tampa, FL, former AUSA in the Southern District of New York, chair-elect of the ABA Criminal Justice Section

“Michael Blutrich, a smart lawyer from Brooklyn, was feeling pretty good when his new Upper East Side strip club became a must-visit destination for everyone from Leonardo DiCaprio to Donald Trump. Then Blutrich found out he had partners he hadn’t known about: John Gotti’s crime family. An irrepressible wiseacre, Blutrich’s first thought was that he’d seen nothing about that in the lease. Then a couple of hoods whacked two employees and things got very real, very fast. Soon, Blutrich became the least likely undercover agent the FBI ever had, wearing a wire against Gotham’s biggest gangsters. But he kept his eyes open and his sense of humor and the result is this great read.” —Tom Robbins, Investigative Reporter and coauthor of Mob Boss

It's books like this that make me realize I live a rather boring and mundane life. Seriously? How do people get themselves into these situations? And more importantly, how is this guy still breathing??

Anyways, on to the review. I enjoyed this one. The Mafia stuff was fascinating. The Scores stuff entertaining. The author had an engaging voice that kept me turning the pages.

Overall just a really entertaining read.

I was given a copy of this book from Netgalley and BenBella Books for review.

A rocket ride of a story. This book pulled me in and kept me there right up through the epilogue. Such a bizarre yet true story, that I kept shaking my head all through it at things that kept happening. Blutrich's writing is sardonic and funny and keeps a good pace. He's a gay lawyer who started the first sports/strip club SCORES in New York in the 1990's which quickly became a hit. At that time there weren't any classy gentlemen's clubs in New York, and it really took off. Next thing he knows, he's being shaken down by the mob, and has his own legal problems brewing from an insurance embezzlement scheme he'd gotten caught up in out of Florida when he was raising capital for the club.

Now the FBI is after him to take care of his Florida problems by collecting evidence on the mob in exchange for lenience. Things get crazy and twisted in all directions, told in Blutrich's hilarious manner Filled with lots of drama from all of the different people he comes in contact with: the mob guys, celebrities, sports stars, politicians and law enforcement. A very engaging read with surprises at many turns.
