Description

Big Nate is in a class by himself. This feisty 11-year-old holds the school record for detentions, but that doesn't stop him from dreaming big!

Nate Wright’s a winner—in his own mind, anyway. So when things go wrong, he’s at a loss to explain why. How does his soccer team manage to lose to a school with a sixty-game winless streak? What’s he doing at the movies on a Friday night . . . with GINA? And why, oh why is one of his classmates (hint: she’s Nate’s dream girl) suddenly moving 3,000 miles away? It’s all enough to make a sixth-grade superstar feel . . . well, not so super.

But you can’t keep a good man down, and Nate’s still got pals like Teddy, Francis, and Chad to cheer him up. Sure, their methods aren’t always warm and fuzzy, but Nate doesn’t mind. After all, what’s a little noogie between friends?

Big Nate by Lincoln Peirce** spoiler alert ** If you love Big Nate, this book will be right up your alley. The usual stints with soccer and basketball. Photo Day is a compound threat with School Picture Guy being his usual self but then Coach John shows up as well. We also see more with Jenny and Nate when we all get the news that she is moving to Seattle.

Loads of funny stuff between Nate's team losing the match by a loser team to Nate's accidental date-night with Gina (Gah!) but I was really sad to see Jenny go...please tell me she will be back!

This comic strip is consistent in bringing the funny, and that’s all you can ask. Whether it’s soccer, table football, Star Trek: The Next Generation. . . Nate always finds a way to pull a screw-up from the jaws of victory. You’d think it couldn’t get any worse for him than his crush moving away, but when he ends up at the movies next to his nemesis—and they’re mistaken for a couple!—noogies hardly seem to matter at that point.

Another great instalment to the series.

My 11 year old loves reading Big Nate and often stays up past his bedtime to read 'just one more page'. He loved Nate's shenanigans and found them laugh out loud funny. This time around, there were some touching moments as well which gave us an opportunity to have meaningful discussions.

As a mom, I love how many issues facing elementary and middle school children at this moment are dealt with through comedic relief and camaraderie. If you have a child that isn't a reader, I urge you to try Big Nate. An funny and entertain read.

Confession time here, this is my very first graphic novels that I have read and I really enjoyed it. It is also my first Big Nate book and one thing I discovered from reading this book is that he is a lot of fun, mischievous and gets himself into all sorts of unfortunate situations. Nate reminds me of your typically pre teen and teen (yes I am stereotyping here, and no I probably shouldn't be), looking a little crazy in the school picture (not from lack of trying to look 'normal'), driving teachers a little exasperated and denying he is on a date (it was the only seat left...really it was).

The main characters in the book are Nate (or course). the girl of Nate's dreams Gina (although he will deny it), and his mates Teddy, Francis and Chad. One thing about Nate's friends is they are not good at lying and say things when Nate doesn't want them to...which perhaps is a good thing when you are pretending to like the old lady (and not just her jelly beans). Nothing is ever simple with this friendship group, but always entertaining.

The most important part of the book is that it was engaging even to me as an adult, I wanted to keep reading. For the avid reader of graphic novels I am sure many of the Big Nate series has already been part of your reading pile, but I urge you not to miss this "What's a Little Noogie Between Friends?" and someone tell me...is a little Noogie between friends really ok?

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley/the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

My oldest daughter is almost ten years old, and she loves Big Nate comics. Needless to say, she was very excited about being able to read What’s a Little Noogie Between Friends?

Nate is a fairly typical middle school boy. He goes to school, plays sports, and spends time with his friends. He has a reputation as a slacker, and this forms the basis for most of the jokes in the book. Peirce does not present an idealized version of school life; Nate makes mistakes and is sometimes the punchline rather than the one doling out the jokes. Nate is a very real character, and that’s what makes him so fun to read about.

This is a typical comic strip collection. Each page is divided into panels- most of the pages have 4 panels, but some have 8 panels. The book contains several story arcs- one involves Nate babysitting, and another involves Nate on the basketball team. These stories take place over several pages of panels, but there is always a small punchline in the last panel of each page.

My daughter really enjoyed reading this book, and she read it in one sitting. She said that it was very funny, and that other kids would like this book because it talks about school and things that kids can relate to. She also asked when the next Big Nate book was coming out.

I would recommend Big Nate: What’s a Little Noogie Between Friends? This book will appeal to fans of the Big Nate comic strip, as well as to children in elementary/middle school who can relate to Nate’s predicaments. Peirce’s style and humor are reminiscent of Calvin and Hobbes and Foxtrot, and my daughter is already looking forward to the next Big Nate book.

My 8 year old son and I read this book. He loves all of the Big Nate books so this one met his expectations. We will definitely be looking for more to come. As a parent anytime I can get my kids reading makes me happy. It took me a while to come around to the comic book style of books that are so popular with the kids now but I have come to accept that if they are reading it doesn't matter.
