High school junior, Kylie Bates, can suddenly read minds. When she touches people’s hands, she’s able to see their deepest thoughts. As if that’s not freaky enough, her dad sends her to help hottie detective, Sam Williams, track down a missing girl. Way too much pressure, especially for a girl who can’t watch Scream without getting nightmares.

Then, finding the missing girl leads to much more than Kylie’s prepared for. Like discovering that her dad has been lying to her. That she has a family she never knew about. That the girls have powers similar to hers. Oh yeah, and that someone is out to get her.

When the detective’s teenage wanna-be-cop cousin, Trip Williams, approaches Kylie at school insisting she help him solve the case, she discovers Trip might be the only one she can trust, and the only one to help her unravel the secrets behind her mysterious gift.

SHAKEN a young adult, the first in "Mind Read " series by Susan Hatler.
Her books are always good, funny, enjoyable plots. This starts with Kylie 16 year old girl, answering the door, before going off to school. A salesman, Mark, hands her his card before leaving. She is Shaken, by the touch and the thoughts that are coming to her. Goes to school, touches her friends, nothing happens, oh, she didn't touch their hand. Introduced to her substitute science teacher, he shakes her hand and her comes those peek a boo thoughts again. Her Dad is a Psychologist, tells hers that nothing she tells him, he hasn't heard before. So she does, he doesn't believe her. She shakes his hand, and her comes those peek a boo thoughts. Then a friend of her Dads come to the door, a police officer. Dad wants Kylie to help find a missing girl, to trust him. Why,what's going on .This is a delightful book, that keeps you laughing and turning the pages, to the end. Looking forward to more in this series. Given ARC by Net Galley for my voluntary review and my honest opinion.

This is a really fast read that I found entertaining. I liked the theme and think young adults would enjoy this idea.

I have found this Book to be review on NetGalley, Synopsis was very interesting and appealing to me.
Young Adult is not my usual but something I was really happy I took upon me to read it.
Full of Mystery and intrigue, Kylie discover very soon in the book that she got a special ability. All throughout she realized that people close to her have been lying and hiding thing from her.

The Books end whit a happy ending but with lots of questions still unanswered.
I do hope there will be more books coming along I will surely get them

This was a refreshing story, very different then my usual but very worth it
Congrats to the Author, you did an amazing Job

I liked the pacing and writing of this book. The main character, Kylie was not obnoxious or irritating. I liked that she remained true to her high school, crush having, sixteen year old character with teenager worries of pop quizzes, guys, best friends, etc. I like a book even more when it keeps me guessing, and I'm wrong! This happened a few times as I tried to piece the story together.

I also liked that the story was fairly clean. There were a few images that I would not want my middle schooler to read (flashes of making out with clear intent), but others may not find these parts a problem. I liked that Kylie felt guilty about making wrong choices though blaming someone else was not acceptable. I thought the other characters brought more mystery to the story. I was left with a few unanswered questions. I don't know if they will be answered in the next book or not. Here's hoping, though. Very quick, fairly clean read. I loved that there was NO bad language! Thank you for a great story that had me on edge hoping that all would end well.

At first, I thought this book was a little slow. The first chapter or so seemed to drag just a bit, but then it got really exciting, and I am glad I stuck with it.

Wow, what would it be like, if one day you simply could start reading minds? Kylie Bates had to experience that, and – of course – it freaked her out. What if you also found out that your Dad lied to you about something very important? Another real shock, that is for sure.

Thrown into the midst of mind reading, a kidnapping, and family drama, this young girl deals with a lot throughout the story, but at least she does not have to deal with it alone. Trip – another high-school senior and amateur detective is by her side.
Okay, I really thought that Trip was really sweet. I love the character Susan Hatler created there, and I really want to know more about him – which I hope will happen in the next installment of this series.
Actually, all of the characters had an amazing depth to it, so it was easy to connect and feel with them. I love when an Author sets up ALL of the characters well in the first book of the series, and I am not left wondering what that person was doing there.
I also loved the conclusion, which left just enough open to make me want more but also completely closed the book and the story. I hope Susan will continue that for her upcoming books in the series, because that way they can be all read as a stand-alone novel, and maybe entice someone who only read one of the series, to grab the next?
In any case, I can hardly wait to read the next book!

This book was a quick, and very enjoyable read. Kylie is a high school junior whose biggest concern is being able to have a normal conversation with the guy she has a crush on. One day she wakes up with the ability to read peoples' thoughts and memories with a touch of their hand. Next, she is roped in to trying to help find a kidnapped girl and dealing with the lies and deception of the people around her. Complicating things is her attraction to Trip, the cousin of the cop in charge of the kidnapping case and a fellow high school attendee. This book has a lot of action, romance, and drama (with a touch of melodrama, but the characters are teens after all) that keeps you from putting the book down. Also, this book leaves a few loose ends, especially regarding family drama, which will provide material for future stories. I will definitely be reading the next book in the series!

I received a free copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This book was a great read! Awesome, humorous story-telling made me chuckle not a few times, delighting in the main character's witty thoughts and conversations with the other participants in the story. The author excellently, effortlessly told the tale from the viewpoint of a teenager with all the usual character traits found in such age group: defiance, disobedience, realization of wrong, forgiveness. The plot is solid, although a few questions are deliberately left unanswered to give way to the next book in the series, but at least the foundation of the story is clear and coherent. I love Kylie and Trip and I hate the best friend. This is one enjoyable, light read you would like to indulge in during life's bleak days when you're looking for something to make you smile.

Many thanks to Netgalley and Hatco Publishing for providing me a copy of this book.
