This was a very enjoyable read. I got into this book very quickly and once I started it, I found it hard to put down. I would highly recommend this book

Detective Julie “Jules” Sawyer is on her way to visit her father. She happens upon a dead man in the ladies’ toilet. When she grabs the conductor and proceeds to the women’s toilet they discover the body is gone.

Naomi is an older woman who lives with her Golden Retriever Cooper in a trailer park. Living next door to her is a family whose 12-year old daughter Candace has gone missing. Even though their ages are disparate, they get along famously and Cooper also misses the little girl. While walking in the woods with her dog Naomi happens upon a severed human foot.

Meanwhile back on the train, the killer announces that he has a bomb and a hostage and stopping the train will force him to set off the bomb. As Jules desperately searches for clues, time is ticking. Is it possible that these two cases are connected?

For a debut novel, this book is very well written and plotted. It is a high octane read with lots of suspense and drama. For fans of thrillers, you’ll love this one!

Julia is taking the train to visit her father for a much needed weekend break when she opens the toilet door and finds a dead body. In the meantime Naomi who has been pestering the Sunol police about her missing next door neighbour, Candace, finds a severed foot.

I enjoyed One Way Ticket. It is a short read packed with action, gore and some surprises. Ms Hargrove does a good job of weaving her 2 storylines together to make a satisfactory whole. I think the premise is excellent and unusual and Ms Hargrove does a good job within the confines of the format.

The shortness of the novel means that there is little character development, no space in all the action and the plot necessarily has convenient, quick solutions. Personally I prefer a longer read with more development and setbacks but if you like a short, sharp, exciting read One Way Ticket will more than fit the bill.

Detective Julia Sawyer thought she was going to have a nice relaxing dinner with her father when she stepped on that train, little did she know it would be the ride of her life! One Way Ticket by Rachel Hargrove is a well-written, intense, and fast-paced thriller that grabs you right from the start. A fantastic debut novel - I'm already looking forward to the next book in this series! Highly recommend if you are a fan of James Patterson's "Bookshots" short novels.

I read this book in one go. I liked the way it all came together and there is plenty of action in it. I would have liked it to be a bit longer. I would definitely read another book written by this author.

My first by this author and I doubt it will be my last. I will definitely look out for her books in the future but I wouldn't go looking for them. I don't mean that detrimentally, but there are many authors who write similarly. But I would state that this being her first novel it is a very good start. So yes, I would read more. The author definitely has potential.


Each chapter brings you more information. There are several sections to this book which she wraps up well at the end. I'll also admit I did not recognise the killer until he was actually mentioned then I wanted to kick myself. The author was very clever at concealing the killer right up to when she wanted you to know.


The main character Detective Julia Sawyer is on a train to visit her elderly father and comes across a dead body. There is also a missing child and a severed man's foot. Each chapter introduces each crime and more participants. It's also amusing as she doesn't portray the police in a bright light. There is a lot of angst.


It is a well developed story and built up at a nice pace. The author has a nice writing style which captures your attention. Maybe if the characters were more likable I may have reacted differently. But even the main character Julia was not all that nice in my opinion so she didn't really get my support until the end when she finally became more human.


Yes, I would recommend this book.

One Way Ticket by Rachel Hargrove is a contemporary murder mystery and the first book in the Detective Julia Sawyer series.
The story had all the traditional elements of a murder mystery - an off duty detective, mounting bodies, a train journey and a murderer on the loose! It was a quick little read that certainly had me guessing.
There were also elements of Miss Marple to it, as an elderly woman both pestered a policeman and took it on herself to become an amateur sleuth.
An entertaining way to wile away an hour.

This is the first book I have read by this author and I have to say I was very impressed. I loved the fast pace storyline that had me hooked from the very first page. My one criticism is I wish the book was longer as I read it in a day and would have loved it to go on longer. All in all a fantastic book and one I would recommend to everyone.
