Let’s say this for starters. The cover and lay out is very 80’s. I swear I saw this book in my school library then. But that is where the comparison ends. Modern gaming is so different from my childhood and I am happy that this book didn’t spend any time talking about that. It was chock full of helpful information about how league and tournaments work within the top games currently competitively played. A great primer for beginning gamers.

Publisher Norwood House focuses on 'informational' books for grades K-8. With these three books on gaming (Professional Gaming Careers, E-Sports Competitions, E-Sports Game Design), we get survey overviews in a picture heavy format that give a brief overview of the subject.
With E-Sports Competitions, the various type of games (e.g., 'MOBA' for League of Legends or 'FPS' for Overwatch), who plays them, and issues such as cheating are discussed in a few paragraphs. The book contains many pictures, has a large typeface, and has discussions points perfect for teachers and homeschoolers. There are some generalities that lead to inaccuracies: e.g., an "Overwatch league" is mentioned but at time of publication, there is no formal league for Overwatch as there is for games like League of Legends. But otherwise, this is a nice summery of the E-Sports.
The book breaks down as follows: chapter 1: Game on; Chapter 2: What does it take; Chapter 3: The thrill of competition; Chapter 4: Combating cheating; Chapter 5: The future of competition. Note that this format pretty much follows all the books on egaming in the series: background, current state, future theories.
As a very friendly and brief overview of the subject, this makes a nice introduction to this very modern career. As well, this could also be useful for those who want to get into the career one day and have parents who don't understand that it is a legitimate pro sport. This will help inform parents of the basics. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.
