A mysterious invitation to spend Christmas at an English manor home may bring danger...and love?

England, 1851: When Clara Chapman receives an intriguing invitation to spend Christmas at an English manor home, she is hesitant yet feels compelled to attend—for if she remains the duration of the twelve-day celebration, she is promised a sum of five hundred pounds.

But is she walking into danger? It appears so, especially when she comes face to face with one of the other guests—her former fiancé, Benjamin Lane.

Imprisoned unjustly, Ben wants revenge on whoever stole his honor. When he’s given the chance to gain his freedom, he jumps at it—and is faced with the anger of the woman he stood up at the altar. Brought together under mysterious circumstances, Clara and Ben discover that what they’ve been striving for isn’t what ultimately matters.

What matters most is what Christmas is all about . . . love.

Wow, what a refreshingly unique tale of mystery and romance set over the holidays in 1850's, England! It is like a slice of Dickens and Agatha Christie, with a touch of Alexander Dumas for flavor. I enjoyed following this group of colorful characters through the twelve days of Christmas in the manor house, each with their own motivation for being there. The good, the bad, and the ugly in nineteenth century form. Lyrical, descriptive writing, with quotable lines added to the reading pleasure, plus some action.

Recommend to readers who enjoy historical mystery and clean romance, with some faith.

12 Days at Bleakly Manor is set in 1850 in England. Clara Chapman, a once wealthy society girl, now living with an aunt due to a family financial collapse, receives an invitation to Bleakly Manor for the 12 days of Christmas. She'll receive 500 pounds if she stays the full 12 days.

Ben Lane, Clara's former fiancé, has been wrongly imprisoned for embezzlement. He receives an invitation also, but will have a full pardon and set free if he stays all 12 days.

Michelle Griep has gathered quite a quirky and unique cast of characters that never cease to entertain you. Will Clara and Ben be able to clear up a misunderstanding that has caused them both to have trust issues? Do second chances really happen? I highly recommend this historical romantic mystery.

I received this book from Barbour Publishing via NetGalley and this is my honest opinion.

I'm forever in love with anything and everything Michelle Griep writes. This was perfectly perfect. I loved the diverse cast of characters and the second-chance love story (which, I'll admit, has never been my fav). My heart skipped a beat during the many moments of high-stakes and the constant twists and turns this novel took. I cannot wait for more!

Thank you to NetGalley and Barbour Publishing, Inc., Shiloh Run Press for allowing me to read this digital book galley.

I truly enjoyed this well plotted mystery novel filled with well developed characters. Six people receive an invitation to spend the Twelve Days of Christmas at Bleakly Manor, beginning on December 25, 1850 and ending at midnight on January 5, 1851. Each is promised something that they desperately want or need will be their reward for spending the season there. Once they arrive at Bleakly, however, they discover that only one will receive the promised reward for staying the entire time and anyone who leaves before time is up, regardless of reason, forfeits their chance at the reward. The mixture of character types was quite interesting and the author, Michelle Griep, was very clever about keeping the true motivations of each person well under wraps. There are no deaths which take place, but this is definitely a series of mysteries. In the first place no one knows the identity of the owner of Bleakly Manor. Neither do they know whether the six guests are who or what they claim to be. So prepare yourself for a Christian mystery novel where faith, love, and charity all play their part in helping...........Ah, but that's where the twists begin so you really need to read this to find out how these strangers deal with all the misfortunes and adventures they find themselves involved in. A sweet love story is the main basis for the novel, but trying to figure out what is going on will bring readers enjoyment also.

The first chapter of book two in the Once Upon a Dickens Christmas series, A Tale of Two Hearts, is included at the end of the book.

What fate awaits a cast of seven eccentric characters who heed the missive of a single gold embossed envelope inviting them to spend 12 days at Bleakly Manor? That's what the reader will find out in this cleverly written mystery! Only one will receive the prize promised within the letter and each are determined to stay. Even when mishaps begin to happen!

Mystery, mayhem, a manor full of secrets and a missing host mash up in this page turner! Unique and eccentric characters, vividly told scenery so real you think you've stepped in the story yourself, clues cleverly dropped, all sprinkled with a second chance love story. What a fun read!

•°o•:*:•. Wow! Game of ‘Clue’ set in 1850 London .•:*:• o°•
This story had so many twists and turns and really kept me guessing. It very much reminded me of the game of Clue with its quirky characters and mysterious manor. It kept me guessing all the way through. Each person had received an invitation to celebrate the Twelve Days of Christmas (Dec 25 to Jan 5). Each guest received a cryptic invitation and would win a gift important only to them IF they could last the entire time. Kind hearted Clara and honorable Benjamin each received invitations, not knowing the other had as well. Each had suffered much, and finding their way back to each other was unexpected for both, but because of their faith and buried love for one another, it was not as difficult as they would have imagined. The big reason for the mystery was not one I would have guessed AT ALL! What a fun and unique surprise. A favorite supporting character was Miss Scurry and her box of “friends”. She was a kind hearted elderly lady who just wanted companionship.
I enjoyed this story very much, and the cover is gorgeous!

"12 Days at Bleakly Manor: Book 1 in Once Upon a Dickens Christmas series"
by Michelle Griep
This is a Romance, Suspense, Victorian era novel... and be sure to read to the very end.. then let me know who the very last character mentioned just might have been... I have my opinion... and wonder if you will agree.
This is a little bit of my typically favorite story genre (1800's England).. and a bit out of my normal selection range.. BUT !! I am very glad I stretched myself and selected this book. There are many twists and turns, false starts and unexpected out-comes... thus this is a page turner.. at least it was for me. Bleakly Manor is well named, as is Miss Scurry... I wonder if you will agree with me ?? This is a "I liked very much" book... I just may have to read it at least one more time ... just to see if I missed any clues to get a step or two ahead of the characters as they persevere through the holidays.

I felt like I stepped back in time. The manor sounded grand, but a bit bizarre at the same time. What a combination of characters to have at a holiday gathering. Each person had such an interesting reason to be at the manor. I truly expected the servants to slowly disappear one by one and have the guests fix their own meals. This book was a book I had a hard time setting down. I was hoping there was a way for all to get their hearts desire. But only one can win the grand prize. I liked the concept of the book. The pace was good and kept me entranced. This story works well for a historic cozy mystery too. What a delight!

Michelle Griep is an author I've always enjoyed ever since I found her. 12 Days at Bleakly Manor is a rollicking read that takes place over Christmas. A random group of people have been invited to spend the twelve days of Christmas at Bleakly Manor. A skeleton staff has been left to see to the needs of the guests. What the guests don't really know is that they are being watched.

This book reminds me of those parties where the guests play characters in a murder mystery and the job of each one is to find out "who-dunit." Clara Chapman and Benjamin Lane are two of the guests. A year ago, they were supposed to be married, but Ben stood Clara up at the altar, or so she thought.

While the rest of the guests are having to find what is missing in their lives, Clara and Ben are having to find what they've lost.

This is one of the most compelling books I've read in a while. I give it five stars, two thumbs up, and a stay at a manor house.

My thanks to Shiloh Run Press for allowing me to read and review this book.

I'm a sucker for historical fiction and mysteries. Michelle Griep weaves both of these together into an enjoyable read. The book was labeled as Christian fiction but I didn't feel like it was preachy. Just don't expect a bodice ripper! Several guests are anonymously invited to Bleakly Manor for the 12 days of Christmas celebration and offered a reward if they stay the duration. The owner of the manor never makes an appearance and potentially deadly accidents start happening to each guest shades of Agatha Christie's "And Then There Were None". Throw in a romance and I'm there. I always watch Lifetime holiday movies and I always like to read a holiday themed book around Christmas. This one would be perfect if that's your thing. Kudos to Griep for the historical accuracy and helpful footnotes!

Fast-paced read with an Agatha Christie feel to it, this Christmas mystery brought crime and romance to an eclectic group of Victorian characters. Charles Dickens has a cameo, making this a delightfully surprising book with twists and turns to entertain any reader. It's a quick read, so you only need a few hours to go from beginning to end, and if you read by a fire with a cup of hot tea, you'll feel like you're sitting right inside the book.

Clara Chapman gets an intriguing letter bidding her come to Bleakly Manor, where, if she stays for twelve days, she will receive 500 pounds. Desperate for money after her ex-fiance embezzled from her family's company, she agrees and heads off to the manor. Little does she know that said ex-fiance, Benjamin Lane, also received a letter. His prize? Freedom, after being falsely imprisoned for the past nine months. Their meeting is bittersweet, as both feels the one has betrayed the other. But they soon realize their problems are much bigger as accidents begin to happen to the other guests. Christmas at Bleakly Manor may not be as merry as they first hoped, and their rekindled love may not be enough to save them.

Both Clara and Ben were relatable characters, with imperfections that helped the reader connect with them quickly. Clara was, perhaps, a bit more frustrating, because she did have moments where I just wanted to shake her. She was slow to believe in Ben's innocence, even when it should have been obvious. If you love someone, should it be so easy to believe they would steal from you? Ben was charming and quickly forgave Clara for her disbelief, which was admirable. It made me like him even more in the end.

Michelle Griep writes yet another good read, and this will be great for Christmastime. It's quick, enjoyable, and inspiring.

Miss Scarlett in the library with a candlestick.........
I can't help it this novella reminds me of those Clue books I devoured as a kid. A huge mansion with a collection of quirky characters, all compeating in a challenge for a prize, oh and with a Christmas twist.
Very enjoyable, sweet love story based on second chances and trusting in God.

While written in modern day English, this delightful book hearkens back to a Charles Dickens' novel. Intrigue, well developed characters, twists and turns, lost love, unrequited love, thievery, mishap and death abound in this novel. The author keeps the reader guessing until the very end. Very well written. The descriptions of the places and areas of London are well done. They make the reader feel in familiar surroundings. Ms. Griep has done a wonderful job of developing her main characters and has you cheering them on (or not) in their endeavors. It is set in the mid 1800's in London. An intriguing Christmas story to be sure. Happily I find that this is volume one in a series by Ms. Griep. She has been ever so kind as to whet your appetite by include an excerpt of Once Upon a Dickens Christmas #2.

12 Days at Bleakly Manor by Michelle Griep is full of mystery, humor, romance and many fun twists and turns. The setting is an old English manor in the 1850’s.
An odd assortment of characters is invited to Bleakly Manor to spend the 12 days of Christmas. Each has been promised a different reward based on their need. Miss Scruffy desires to regain her hope, Clara her lost money, and Ben his lost freedom. We quickly learn that Ben has been imprisoned for a crime he did not commit and believes Clara may be responsible for his suffering. Clara believes Ben has taken her family’s funds when he left her at the altar. Mr. Pocket is a lawman who Ben believes is there to watch him so he cannot escape. The rest of the group includes Mr. Minnows, Mademoiselle Pretents and the wheelchair bound Mr. Tallgrass. Strangely, the Lord of the Manor is not present. The guests soon learn that there are many strange happenings about the place starting with missing jewels. Will everyone stay for the full 12 days or will they decide it is too dangerous and not worth their promised reward?
This is a really fun read! The story line is similar to a mystery dinner theater play. The characters are all very diverse and no one is exactly who they seem to be at first. There is plenty of action with lots of twists and turns keeping the reader engaged to see what will happen next. The writing is superb as I always expect from this author. The quirky characters are well developed so you think you know them but then some details of character are later found to have been missing. I can’t say enough good things about this book. It is definitely a 5 of 5 stars. I recommend it to everyone who loves to read historical romance.

12 Days at Bleakly Manor combines mystery with clean romance and offers a historic view of the 12 days of Christmas in late-19th century England. A group of people is summoned by an unknown host to spend the holidays at Bleakly Manor in this mystery that evokes thoughts of Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None and the game Clue. I was drawn in to the mystery surrounding the individuals assembled and the rekindling romance between Clara and Ben. It was a fairly quick read that I thoroughly enjoyed.

This book was fascinating. At first I wondered if it was a parable, the words and descriptions were almost lyrical and seemed to hold many layers of meaning. It was very deep and heartwarming, with the whimsy of association of a famous author. I love that it is a book that can be read by my grandchildren, and I know they will be better for having read it.

12 Days at Bleakly Manor (Once Upon a Dickens Christmas) was a great read! I enjoyed the premise of the story where they have to stay in the Manor for the 12 Days of Christmas in order to win the prize. Each person was promised a different prize by staying, and there are several characters who cause all kinds of problems. Who do you root for? Clara needs the money but Ben needs his freedom from being falsely accused of theft. Both Ben and Clara learn to overcome the difficulties of past and present to reach the goal.

I enjoy Michelle Griep's writing style and can't wait for more in this series.

I received a preview of this book from NetGalley/Barbour Publishing, Shiloh Run Press for my honest review.

My craving for all things Victorian has been indulged! This book had so much of what I love within its pages... Mystery, History, Holiday, Drama, Twists and Turns and Sweet Romance... all with a hint of Christianity. And that history was right on target with a bonus of some historical clarifications toward the back of the book. Thank you Michelle Griep for that too!

Once I started reading, I could not put this book down. Not extremely lengthy, but just enough to be thorough with the story. Charles Dickens would be proud!

Set in London in 1850, Clara Chapman's life had taken a downward turn having lost her fortune and being left at the alter, abandoned by the man she loved. Then she received an invitation. If she can stay at Bleakly Manor for twelve nights she will be given five hundred pounds. Clara's ailing aunt encourages her to accept.

Upon arriving at Bleakly Manor, Clara realizes she is not the only person to receive such an invitation, each with a reward geared just for them. One of those invitee's is none other than Ben Lane, the man accused of embezzeling and destroying Clara's father's business... and the man who had left her standing at the alter. Unbeknownst to Clara, Ben had actually been imprisoned unjustly all these months.

Michelle Griep created a wonderful assortment of characters, and a mystery with lots of twists and turns. Who is their host? Which of the houseguests will remain to win their prize?

I would love to see a Christmastime movie made from this novel. And this is just Book #1 of the Once Upon a Dickens Christmas series. I can't wait to read the next one!

A small group of eclectic people are sent an invitation to stay at Bleakly Manor during the Twelve Days of Christmas with the possibility at the end of their stay getting exactly what their hearts desire. Ben was unjustly imprisoned for a crime he didn't commit while Clara's family has been left nearly destitute after being swindled of their fortunes. The formerly engaged duo are not happy to see one another at Bleakly Manor, but can they put the past behind them and work together to find out what's truly going on at Bleakly Manor?

I was completely entranced by this tale. There were many intriguing mysteries to solve and the strange 'accidents' and mishaps kept me glued to the page, wanting to know what happened next. There's a whole cast of entertaining and quirky characters, Miss Scurry my favorite.

12 Days at Bleakly Manor reminded me of one of those good, old-fashioned mysteries. I absolutely loved it! And even though it takes place during Christmastime, it's a story that can be enjoyed any time of the year. There's a short excerpt at the end that has me excited for the sequel! I highly recommend this book for any lover of historical fiction!

I received an eARC copy of this book from the publisher. Here is my honest review.

I'm a sucker for a second-chance love story. This book follows Clara and Ben as they battle to overcome past hurts and bitterness. Several times, Clara asks: "Why God, why?" for various hardships and disappointments that she must face. This resonated with me since I think it's something we can all identify with in one way or another. Early on in the reading, as characters are introduced and the plot progresses, it felt like a cross between Clue (the boardgame) and And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie. I felt sure that the master of Bleakly Manor would appear, but alas, Griep only gave a slight tease as to who he was. Overall I enjoyed this story very much; I love sweet Christmas romance stories and this one with a mix of intrigue was refreshing.

Set in 19th-century England, 12 Days at Bleakly Manor, by Michelle Griep, is the first book in a new series called "Once Upon a Dickens Christmas". It will be available September 1, 2017. Reminiscent of dinner theatre mysteries, 12 Days at Bleakly Manor is a quick and easy read, and would be a good book for book club discussions.

Clara Chapman's groom, Benjamin Lane, disappeared on the day of their wedding. Unbeknownst to her, Ben was kidnapped on his way to the church, and thrown in jail for a crime he did not commit. Both ask, "Why, God? Why me?" Both are invited, along with others, to spend the twelve days of Christmas together, with the promise that whoever lasts all twelve days will be granted his/her wish.

The name Bleakly Manor is perfect, for the huge elaborately furnished manor house is truly bleak with little in the way of food or heat over the twelve days of Christmas. Quickly, human frailties emerge as most try to get rid of the others. Thefts are committed. Several murders are attempted. Will Ben and Clara find love and trust again? Will they make it all twelve days? Will their prayers be answered?

Readers are reminded that Christmas is about love, and nothing else. At the back of the book is information about the twelve days of Christmas (aka, Christmastide), Boxing Day, Childermas, the Yule Log, the New Year's Coin, Carolers, and Wassil.

A super read! I only took off points for what I consider unanswered questions. What a perfect mesh of mystery, romance, historical and plot! I was totally drawn into the story from the first part and did not emerge until the end. Unfortunately, I then wanted all of them! Seriously, the characters, the plots, the action, the romance, as well as the mystery made this a great read! I can only say buy the book! I have not read a lot of this authors works before and find myself wanting to find as much as possible about the author and the prior writings. I will also of course keep my eyes out for the next in the series, I cannot wait! I was given this book in return for an honest review. Anna Swedenmom

I was drawn to the premise of a Christmas story inspired by Agatha’s Christie’s AND THEN THERE WERE NONE and Charles Dickens’ BLEAK HOUSE. It sounded like fun and did make for an entertaining read.

In Victorian England, an assortment of eccentric characters begin to arrive at Bleakly Manor for the Christmas holiday with no sight of their host. Each has received an invitation, luring them with the promise they will receive something of great value to them personally if they can endure a stay at Bleakly Manor for the entire 12 days of Christmas. Among the guests is Benjamin Lane, who has been falsely accused of theft and thrown into prison. He's about to be shipped to a prison camp in Australia when his invitation arrives. Clara Chapman has fallen into poverty and is serving as a companion to her elderly, sickly aunt, when she also is asked to join the festivities. How this couple came into such dire circumstances is one of the several entertaining mysteries to be solved in reading this book.

12 Days at Bleakly Manor is the first book by Michelle Grip that I have read. It is also the first book in a new series that I look forward to read in the future.

I enjoyed the story concept where people are invited to spend the Christmas season at this Manor house. Whoever stays untill the end, wins a prize.

Our heroine and hero, Clara Chapman and Ben Lane were summoned to the house along with several other interesting characters. It was fun reading about each person and what brought them to the house.

Clara was stood up at the alter. Ben was sent to prison, wrongly accused of a crime, on that fateful day. You will have to read the book to find out what happens to them. It's the Christmas season and miracles do happen.

Left at the altar and told that her fiancé has absconded with her family's fortune, Clara Chapman finds herself heartbroken, penniless, and living with an ailing aunt. When a mysterious invitation arrives promising her 1000 pounds to spend the 12 days of Christmas at an unfamiliar Bleakly Manor, Clara feels she has no choice but to accept.

Unjustly accused and imprisoned for stealing the Chapmans' money, Benjamin Lane is offered his freedom if he also spends the same 12 days at Bleakly. As Ben and Clara come face-to-face again at the mysterious country home, they must decide if they can forgive one another for the schemes and misunderstandings that have separated them. When the master of the house never appears, servants continue to leave, and other house guests continually injure themselves in freak accidents, will Clara and Ben even be able to survive 12 days?

Michelle Griep takes reader on an intriguing adventure in 12 Days and Bleakly Manor. Clara and Ben are both well-developed and believable protagonists, and the host of secondary characters in the story are equally entertaining. I particularly enjoyed Griep's depictions of Christmas traditions and celebrations in the mid-19th Century. The story's conclusion was equal parts lovely and satisfying, and I enjoyed every single page. I anxiously await the next installment in the Once Upon an Dickens Christmas series.

If you were promised one thousand pounds to stay at a Victorian mansion for 12 days, would you do it? Several people take up the offer and spend several days together at Bleakly manor, but who will last the entire 12 days?

This was an enjoyable and heartwarming read for the holiday season. A bit of a mystery, a bit of romance, eccentric characters and a happy ending are in store for readers.

If you enjoy Agatha Christie novels, Charles Dickens, The 12 Days of Christmas and a good game of Clue, you will enjoy this short novel by Michelle Griep.

Ok, I LOVE Bleak House by Charles Dickens, as well as, And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie and I LOVED how Michelle Griep combined the two of these together. I loved the ending of the book and how everything came together and the hows and whys of it all. So much fun. If you've read either of the above books that I mentioned then you will have fun reading this book and seeing the similarities. If you haven't read either of those books, grab them now or snatch this one up and it will have you wanting to pick up either of those above mentioned stories to figure out the references.

There were several times when a character would make a comment and I would look over at my husband and say, you've got to hear what this character said. He would listen, smile and say "hey that's so and so from Bleak House". I read a few scenes out loud to him and we both really enjoyed it lots.

Clara and Ben are two great MCs. At the beginning there is the mystery of who are these people, why are they in these circumstances and why are they the ones chosen to attend this 12 Days of Christmas at Bleakly Manor? The accidents, incidents, intrigue, mystery and the feeling of constantly being watched definitely made this a great cozy mystery.

Oh, I want to tell you so much about this story but I don't want to spoil any of the surprises or outcomes. Typing this I'm going through all the characters in my head and thinking about their individual little nuances. I start to say that one is my favorite over the other but then I think about them in Bleak House and just smile and think, "I like them all". Well maybe saying I like them isn't quite right, because some of these characters are just despicable, but I will say I like the way that the author wrote the characters. So fun.

Yes this is a "Christmas" story. It is set at Christmas time but I think you would have fun reading this at any time of the year. Especially if you enjoy Dickens, Christie and Griep! I think this would make a fun movie...Masterpiece, if you're reading this grab the rights to it fast! I would watch it and love it! Grab yourself a copy, settle in with a cozy blanket, you're favorite reading snack/drink and see how fast you can solve the mystery. My family loves watching Masterpiece Theatre, and the best part about watching it together is we all have to make a prediction about whodunnit within the first few minutes of the show. Can you do that with this book? Probably not within the first few minutes, but can you predict and be correct in your guess within the first 10 chapters? Or will it be a surprise to the end for you?

If you haven't read any books by this author, I highly recommend doing so. I've read a novella and this is my second novel by her. I am wanting to adjust my reading schedule to move her books up my list. Great writing, great storyline, loved the mystery and especially the characters. Here's my shoutout to the 'day of reckoning' and 'shake me up'. If those don't make sense, well just read the book and Bleak House as well. Loved it!

I didn't really mention anything about the sweet love story within this story. I loved the second chance given to the MCs. The love and trust that saves them all. I won't say anything past that except I loved watching that relationship unfold and grow. *happy contented sigh*

Content: Clean. A few moments of peril but nothing graphic. Christian aspects are throughout, characters do call out to God in their thoughts and ask for His guidance. Very well done and fits perfect with this time period and characters.

I received a copy from the publisher, Barbour Publishing, via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

While I (gasp) haven’t read any of Agatha Christie’s novels, I’ve seen Michelle Griep’s 12 Days at Bleakly Manor compared to them a few times, making me interested in reading them.
In Griep’s short book, an eclectic cast of characters is brought together to spend the 12 days of Christmas together, each of them promised a prize if they’re the last one standing. As the mysteries of the house and the guests escalate, the tension does as well.
Speaking of tension, how about Clara and Ben? They both feel the other wronged them but they are both good people deep down and spending time together reminds them of better times. Clara’s tenderhearted kindness not only impacts Ben but the other guests as well. And despite her betrayal of him, Ben is determined to protect Clara from whatever is going on in the strange manor house.
When cozy mystery, Clue, and a little Charles Dickens are brought together, what results is a fun read. As the weather starts to turn from summer to autumn, this is the perfect book to pull out with a cup of tea and keep you warm on one of those cooler evenings.

Clara Chapman's life has taken a bad turn. Her fiance left her waiting at the altar a year before, after supposedly stealing her family's money. Funds are running out. She will be left destitute soon. As Christmas approaches, Clara does not know what might become of her and her sickly aunt. Then, on Christmas Eve, an unexpected visitor comes to the door. He hands her an invitation to Bleakly Manor. If she can stay at the manor through the entire 12 days of the Christmas season, she will receive 500 pounds. Although she is afraid of the unknown, they need the money, so she travels to the manor.

Six people arrive. All have been promised a different reward for staying in the house for 12 days. It is revealed that only one person will actually receive a prize -- the last person remaining in the house at the end of the 12th day. Strange things start occurring almost immediately, and one by one the guests leave, by choice or through force. Who will be the last one left?

Clara is beside herself....not only because she's in a strange house, but because one of the people with her is the very fiance that left her standing at the altar.

This is an enjoyable holiday story! It is Christian fiction, but not overly preachy. (If Christian beliefs are not your cup of tea, pass this one by.) The story is like A Christmas Carol by Dickens got intertwined with And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie. It's a nice mix of suspense, romance, and heartwarming holiday tale. The ending has a bit of a surprise that made me smile. All in all, a great Christmas story!!

The cover art is wonderful! So festive! :)

Pour a cup of tea and settle in for Book 1 of the Once Upon a Dickens Christmas series--a page-turning Victorian-era holiday tale--by Michelle Griep, a reader and critic favorite.

My Thoughts:

This book is romantic suspense at it's best with a Christmas/Holiday backdrop thrown in for good measure. A Christmas theme is a plus as this is the time of year I look forward to reading new Holiday romance stories.

I admit to never having heard of or read anything else by this particular author, but I will look for more from her in the future. I am always on the lookout for new to me authors and Michelle Griep has surpassed my expectations.
I gave this book 4.5 of 5.0 stars for storyline and character development and a sensual rating of 2 of 5 flames. This book is mostly a mystery with a second chance love story added for good measure. There is an Agatha Christie like plot and feel to this sweetly told Christian romantic suspense novel.

I received a complimentary digital ARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley to read. This in no way affected my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily.

This book was my introduction to Michelle Griep's writing and, wow, it was a fun ride! This book combines a little history, plenty of mystery and intrigue, and a heapful of romance to draw the reader in from page one.

The writing is easy to follow and the book is very well-written. The plot is engaging and there are many twists and turns in the storyline that the reader is kept guessing until the very end of the book. The premise of the book reminded me of the board game Clue...or Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None. Three men and three women are invited to Bleakley Manor for the Twelve Days of Christmas celebration and they are promised something in return if they stay the entire twelve nights - but the promised reward is only for the last person remaining at the end of twelve days. Cue the rolling fog and eery music....

Clara and Ben, the main characters of the story and two of the invited, are wonderfully detailed in their personalities, flaws, dreams, and desires. Their shared painful past divides them but also draws them together.

I'm definitely looking forward to the second installment of this series and will be on the look out for more of Michelle Griep's books.

I received an ARC of the book from Barbour Publishing via NetGalley. I was not required to write a review or a favorable review. All comment and opinions are solely my own.

This was a fun quick read. I didn't realize it wasn't a full length novel as I usually don't bother with short stories but it was worth the read. You cannot help rooting for Clara and Ben. As we are introduced to Clara and the setup begins for her stay at Bleakly Manor it becomes obvious where the story is going. It was a good ploy to bring the characters together and introduce a wacky ensemble trapped together. It is not a dark read in the classic locked in mystery. While it is set around the 12 Days of Christmas and has old traditions of the time in which it is set this is a book you can really enjoy at any time of year. The Christmas setting isn't really one that is more enjoyable during the Christmas season. In fact, given the sad state of affairs for our main characters it might be too bleak to really be enjoyed around Christmas. I do wonder about the circumstances of Effie's situation and if that would be explained in the next book. I enjoyed her brief explanation of the older holiday traditions at the end and there were a few I didn't know. I would be interested in seeing where this series is going. I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

The story starts with Clara Chapman who was left at altar 1 year ago. She was left without money after her fiancée supposedly embezzled funds, effectively the family fortune, from her family’s business, Blythe Shipping and ran off. Clara is living with Aunt and receives mysterious note to stay at Bleakly Manor for 12 days for which she will receive 500 pounds.
The next chapter then turns to find Benjamin Lan, Clara’s fiancée, in jail for the theft of the Chapman’s money. Find out that he was put in jail without a proper trial. He too receives a letter to attend Bleakly Manor for 12 days in return for his freedom.
Clara arrives at Bleakly manor to find several others in attendance, all with letters promising something to the attendee depending on their motivation. It is found out that only the person that remains at the end of the 12 days will get their reward. For some reason, this is reminiscent of, a little, of Agatha Christie’s “And Then There Were None.” Of course, mishaps start occurring in the house and to the attendees. Makes for an interesting read. The story of Clara and Benjamin unfolds in this surrounding and explanations around what happened 1 year ago. A very good, enjoyable novel with a good, unusual mystery to follow. Plus a love story too. Not your traditional murder mystery… but well worth a read!

I enjoyed reading 12 Days at Bleakly Manor. As I was reading the delightful book, I often felt like I was reading about the characters in the board game, Clue. It was entertaining to discover the different quirks behind each character. The themes of forgiveness and second changes run through out the book. I look forward to reading the next book in this series.

12 Days at Bleakly Manor is set around Christmas, but it isn't just a Christmas story. When the scene is set, we find Bleakly Manor full of guests, all invited to spend the Christmas holidays. No one seems to know who their host is, only that they've each been promised some kind of a reward if they manage to be the last to stay the 12 day duration as instructed on their invites. It's a rather odd hodge podge assortment of guests, among which we find our main characters Clara and Ben. They were in love, prepared to be wed, and then life tore them viciously apart. What is the meaning of them both being invited to this strange house at the same time and under such unusual circumstances?

With the 12 days allotted to them, Ben and Clara find they have plenty of time to consider their past and their future. There are many questions to ask, though not all come with an easily obtainable answer. Add to this the fact that something strange is afoot at Bleakly Manor. Mysteries abound as one after another the guests are engaged by life threatening accidents. Who is pulling the strings of this charade and for what end? Will anyone make it through as victor on day 13? What does the future itself hold for Ben and Clara specifically?

Wow, I had no idea I would enjoy this book so much, and yet I can say without a doubt it's easily one of the best books I've read all year- possibly ever. It wasn't that it was some new fangled, never heard of before story concept or that it was full of huge "wham, bam, thank you man" moments. What it was was a very well constructed, sweet mystery/romance that, like is the case with Christmas magic, just left me in awe.

Tomorrow, September 1, this book is set to be published and hit store shelves. Do not let the Christmas theme deter you from wanting to read it straight away. You simply can not wait a moment longer. Walk, no run, to your nearest bookstore tomorrow! It'll be like an early Christmas present to yourself. Seriously, this is not a book to be missed.

My utmost thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for granting me this early review opportunity. I can hardly wait until n still year when the second book in this fabulous new series is due out. Thank you!

I received a ARC of 12 Days at Bleakly Manor from Netgalley and the publisher. Clara Chapman world fell apart when Benjamin Lane the man she was suppose to marry left her at the church on their wedding day with no explanation. A week later she was told by her brother that he had put the company out of business and ran off with her family investments and that they were now penniless. Her brother sailed to America to make his fortune promising Clara he would send for her. Lucky for Clara her Aunt Deborha took her in. Mean while Ben is rotting away in prison. When Clara receive an invite to spend 12 Days At Bleakly Manor over Christmas the last person she expect to see there is Ben. But with the chance to walk away after 12 days with 500 pounds Clara has no choice but to stay. With a cast of very quirky, and interesting characters nothing is as it seem and danger lurks around every corner. This was quite a unusual Christmas Romance, one that because of the unique and quirky characters and all the twists and turns I quite enjoyed.

Shades of Charles Dickens, Agatha Christie, and an 1800s Romance

Clara Chapman is becoming anxious. Not only was she left at the altar by her fiance, who stole her family fortune, but the aunt she’s living with is dying and then she’ll have no place to go unless her one time maid gets her a job in the hat factory.

Ben Lane, her finace, is wrongfully imprisoned. He didn’t steal the money. He was grabbed on the way to the church and thrown into prison without a trial. He still loves and misses Clara, but he doubts he will ever be able to clear his name and claim her.

On Christmas Eve the ex-lovers receive invitations to Bleakly Manor. If they can stay through the 12 days of Christmas, Clara will receive 500 pounds, which she dearly needs, and Ben will receive his freedom. The catch is that only one person, the one left at the end of the 12 days, will receive the prize.

In addition to Clara and Ben, several other eccentric individuals have received invitations. They all want the prize, and some are willing to do anything to get it.

This is a lovely story. The 1800s Christmas traditions are showcased. Readers familiar with Bleak House will find much to remind them of Dickens, particularly the zany characters, and for Agatha Christie fans, the plot has aspects of Ten Little Indians.

The main characters, Ben and Clara, are delightful lovers. They want to be together, but the hurt keeps them from trusting. It’s a clean romance. No one jumps into bed, but you can feel the tension between Ben and Clara.

If you love cozy mysteries, this is a good one. Although the theme is Christmas, you don’t have to wait. The story is good at any time of year.

I received this book from Net Galley for this review.

What a heart gripping tale of two loves - coming from two different directions. One believed he left her at the later and he believed she had him put in prison for embezzling their families companies money on the day of their wedding. Both wanting explanations both wanting revenge both wanting to love again. You feel yourself being pulled deeper and deeper into the story with each new amazingly hauntingly huge disaster after another, as dangerous as it were. I started reading it late at night and found myself greeting my kid in the morning as I was fine wishing it cause there was no way was I going to put this down til I was done and I knew it all and I tell you - you won't either. You will love and adore it like I do.

Just in time for the upcoming holiday season, 12 Days at Bleakly Manor puts a little twist on what we expect from Christmas tales. This story is part Clue and part And Then There Were None with a dash of romance. Michelle Griep created an enjoyable mystery as the 1st part to her Once Upon A Dickens Christmas series that leaves me excited for the next. Set in 1851 the story focuses on young Clara who has lost everything and faces an uncertain future when a mysterious invitation arrives promising her 500 pounds to spend the 12 days of Christmas at Bleakly Manor. With no other prospects or much hope Clara sees no other option than to oblige and see how the 12 days will play out. What awaits for her at Bleakly Manor is certainly not at all what she was expecting when she arrives and finds a group of strangers who were also made promises in exchange for staying the full 12 days. The most unexpected surprise for Clara, however, comes in the form of the very man who jilted her at the alter and left her in her difficult situation she has faced for nearly a year. None of the guests understand why they are there or even who the mysterious host is, but day by day things slowly start to unravel and they begin to learn the truth which nobody expected. 12 Days at Bleakly Manor is a unique and fun little read for the chilly days up ahead.

With a writing style reminiscent of Charles Dickens and Agatha Christie, Michelle Griep sets up quite the atmospheric novel. I enjoyed getting to know the characters over a 12 day time period, the 12 Days of Christmas at Bleakly Manor. A tale that kept me reading as I was so intrigued to read the twists and turns taking place. I never knew what to expect til the end. This well developed plot and characters where enjoyable to read about in this mystery. Looking forward to reading book 2 in the Once Upon a Dickens Christmas series releasing Fall 2018. I also enjoyed reading about Victorian Christmas Traditions and their description from the end of the book.

12 Days At Bleakly Manor by Michelle Griep was given to me by Net Galley for an honest review. This is the first book that I have ever read by Michelle Griep and will NOT be my last. 12 Days at Bleakly Manor was truly an outstanding read, one I had to finish after reading the first page. Truly a wondrous book for the mystery, romance, and historical novel lovers out there. Upon receiving a mysterious letter by someone Clara Chapman has never met before summons her to the mysterious Bleakly Manor. There she meets Mr.Pocket, Mademoiselle Pretents, Mr.Minnows. Mrs.Scurry, and Benjamin Lane, a man she thought that she would never have to see again. The story moves about a great pace, not a dull moment. Each guest that is at Bleakly manor is promised something for spending the twelve days of Christmas there and not leaving early. The story continues on with an easy ease, then slowly each character start to reveal their true selves. Thank you once again Michelle Griep for writing a tale so wondrous and thrilling.

Fan's of Dickens will be delighted with Michelle Griep's 12 Days at Bleakly Manor. The setting is a large country manor with limited staff. A group of people each receive an invitation to spend the 12 days of Christmas at the Manor. If they stay the entire time, they will be granted something they really desire. the characters are an odd group, some endearing, others truly weird. I enjoyed the story and look forward to re reading it on a cold snowy day with a large cup of tea and a cozy blanket!

About the author:

I hear voices. Loud. Incessant. And very real. Which basically gives me two options: choke back massive amounts of Prozac or write fiction. I've been writing since I discovered blank wall space and Crayolas. I seek to glorify God in all that I write--except for that graffiti phase I went through as a teenager.

Clara Chapman has been invited to attend a party at a mansion in the country for the 12 Days of Christmas and if she is the last one there she will receive 500 pounds. Benjamin Lane is in prison for something he did not do and suddenly is released from prison, told he must stay for the 12 Days of Christmas to receive his freedom. They were once to marry but she was left at the alter and does not know what happened to Benjamin. The others each have a reason to be there. Who will last the 12 days and what secrets will come to light? Can Clara & Benjamin both win what they have been promised?

This is a cozy mystery set around Christmas in Victorian England. Clara is invited to spend 12 days at Bleakly Manor in order to collect a reward. When she arrives, she learns other strangers-including her ex-fiance Ben-were also invited. Whoever lasts the 12 days will get what they want most. I admit that it's been a while since I've read Dickens' Bleak House so a lot of the references passed me by. However, like Dickens' writing, the cast of invited strangers are eccentric and quirky with hidden motives. Danger surrounds the guests as "accidents" start to happen and conditions at the manor deteriorate. I kept wanting to read to figure out who was behind this game and who was behind all of the "accidents." After the reveal, I admit I wasn't sure about the motives but it was cleverly done. There is light spiritual content and some humorous moments among the strange guests. I enjoyed the author's descriptive writing and Clara and Ben's second-chance-at-romance.

If you enjoy Charles Dickens and Agatha Christie, then 12 Days at Bleakly Manor by Michelle Griep is a book you want to savor by the fire. Great hosts can entice nearly anyone to a fine mansion for the holidays. In true bleak form, however, this is one place you may not want the carriage to stop. On December 24th, 1850, invitations were delivered to a select few who would spend the holidays at the stately Victorian manor.
12 Days at Bleakly Manor: Book 1 in Once Upon a Dickens Christmas by [Griep, Michelle]
For Clara Chapman, a young woman reduced to poor circumstances after being left at the altar on her wedding day, the surprising invitation is quite puzzling for it said:

"The Twelve Days of Christmas
As never's been reveled
Your presence, Miss Chapman, is respectfully herald.
Bleakly Manor's the place
And after twelve nights
Five hundred pounds
Will be yours by rights."

There would be no question she would go though she hated to leave the aunt she lovingly cared for. Go she did and what she found would change her life forever.

Benjamin Lane, betrayed and marked with a prison tattoo languished in his cell, angry at the unknown person who stole his life, took his fortune and turned his only love against him. He too received an invitation to the manor but his invitation gave him no choice but to attend. Attend the twelve days at Bleakly and he may get his freedom. Escape from Bleakly and he would love his life.

All who gathered at Bleakly were led there for a purpose. All sought the reward offered if they could but stay the twelve nights. Each day grew bleaker, however and death was not a stranger as mysterious events turned up and the guests numbers dwindled.

As fate would have it, Clara and Benjamin had met before. She was his love, the one he lost through betrayal. He was the man who left her alone at the church humiliated. A humiliation that was heightened by the ruin of her family's business and fortune through embezzlement by the same man she trusted and loved.

Who will remain and win the prize? If you seek the answer, read the book! A delicious plot complete with the Dickens flavor of Victorian England. Charles Dickens, my favorite author of all time, was a champion of the poor and mistreated. Agatha Christie would have loved the intrigue of the stately manor and absent host. I enjoyed the opportunity to read this book for review from NetGalley and Barbour Publishing. I recommend this book as one you will read this season and in seasons to come!

12 Days at Bleakly Manor, by Michelle Griep, is romantic suspense novel that will capture your interest from the first few pages and delight you all the way until the end. Griep gives the reader a host of amazing characters, a quirky little tale and suspense that has you quickly turning the pages. With the odd characters brought together under suspicious circumstances, and the characters feeling as if they're being watched from the portraits, 12 Days at Bleakly Manor is like a Clue/Scooby Doo mashup set in 17th century England. I will admit the whole story should be a bit cliche - but it isn't! The characters pull you in and make you want to stay through until the end. While I figured out one part of the mystery early, I was still surprised at the end as all of the pieces come together. Griep pulls the reader along at a steady suspenseful pace, never letting up, but never overwhelming the reader either. There is a little bit of romance and a wonderful message tucked into the story as well. Full stars for this book! It was a delightful surprise with each new chapter.

I'm so thankful to have received a copy of this book so I could provide an honest review.

12 Days at Bleakly Manor is a fun, strange and odd story but in a good way. I assumed it was a Christmas story but it was more of an old English holiday tale....sort of. The characters in the story are requested to spend the 12 days of Christmas at an English Manor and, if they stay the entire time, they will receive a prize. Not just any prize. They will receive their heart's desire. Once everyone arrives (and a strange group of people they are) they discover only one person will win. The last person in the Manor on the twelth day of Christmas will be the lucky winner if they are still alive! With more twists and turns than hallways and staircases at Bleakly Manor this is a fun story! It's almost necessary to read it in one sitting. You might miss a clue if you don't pay attention.

What an intriguing book. I love the premise and it did deliver.

Clara and Ben have some major misunderstandings to work through but once the truth is revealed all will be good, right?

The cast of characters are rich in personality. Michelle did a wonderful job of giving everyone their own voice.

This will begin to get you in the Christmas frame of mine a bit early, but it's never too early for Christmas is it?

Ben and Clara have had a hard last year and Clara is not yet ready to trust Ben again with her heart. Ben has to choose between redemption and revenge. Will Ben and Clara get their second chance?

This really is such a great book on so many levels. The storyline is so unique and interesting. I love the characters and all the mystery; there was a lot of things that kept me guessing. The characters are so eclectic and kooky, especially Miss Scurry with her mice.

I like how the chapters were broken down by the days of Christmas. This would make an excellent story to read around Christmas but is still enjoyable any time of year. I highly recommend this book!

Very interesting book. It has great lessons to be learned. Quirky characters and lovable ones too. All set at Christmastime. The house itself is a character! Strange things keep happening to these strangers brought together. Humor, mystery, intrigue, and tales of redemption await you as you read. Definitely an enjoyable read. I was given a copy of this book, the opinions expressed here are my own.

As a fan of both Christmas books and mysteries, I was excited to read this new book that fits both of these categories. 12 Days at Bleakly Manor by Michelle Griep can be called a Dickens-style cozy mystery set in 1851. A group of strangers are invited to stay at Bleakly Manor for 12 days. Mysteries abound, including who invited them all and where their host is. Clara Chapman is the main character, a young girl who recently lost everything, from her family’s money to her fiancé. She is surprised to find her fiancé among the manor’s guests. Things quickly become dangerous and Clara must join forces with her ex-fiancé to solve the mystery and stay safe. This book was a fun, engaging read and I look forward to reading more books from this author. I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

This book did not disappoint! If you are in need of Historical Christmas book, look no further! The book is a cross between Charles Dickens & Agatha Christie, giving you a bit a of a Christmas Mystery. It reminded me of the game of Clue. If a guest can stay the whole 12 days they will receive their own unique prize.

Looking forward to the next in the series!

Listen! Can you hear the clock in the background ticking away the hours as unseen eyes watch from the shadows? In this shrouded, deep mystery of a tale, who will stay? Who will depart from Bleakly Manor? Even the title and front cover shows suspense, along with Christmas spirit and maybe a little sadness thrown in for good measure. I loved the way the details gradually unfolded to develop the plot. And, to top it off, a little romance to go along with the Victorian manor style home. Plus; that gloomy-filled atmosphere surrounding the countryside made for a splendid drama setting. On page 44 of 12 DAYS AT BLEAKLY MANOR, when Clara described the strong and slightly unpleasant sensation, I could almost smell the offensive odor.
I love this book! The story itself seemed to come to life, and became even more mysterious as each page unfolded, with anger, confusion, doubt, Indignation, heart-aches, and thievery. And, in turn, it kept my interest piqued right up to the end. The characters were so delightful, and I was glad to be given a chance to know them. I loved meeting all of them! But especially Clara and Ben. While some were so heart-warming and welcomed me in the manor with open arms, others seemed to beckon me in with that slight warning from their cold stare to beware of what could be inside. I simply devoured this amazing work of art, and look forward to reading yet more work from this fantastic author, Michelle Griep. In my opinion, a brilliant achievement!! A well deserved five star rating because it was so extremely pleasing to read and reread again.

A unique and cozy read full of mystery and a bit of romance. You get a glimpse of Dickens and Christie wrapped up in one. The story takes place in the mid 1800s. Invitations are sent out to come to Bleakly Manor for Christmas promising a reward for the one who endures to the end. The reward differs for each guest, fulfilling the desires of the winner’s heart. Focusing only on their own needs, the guests scheme in an attempt to eliminate each other.

This is a fun Victorian Christmas adventure with a surprising dark element to the characters, who each have their own secrets. This is a hard one to put down because it leaves you anticipating what will happen next. This book is cleverly written with a nice twist at the end. It’s definitely an enjoyable, whimsical holiday read with a bit of darkness and intrigue thrown in for excitement!

Bleakly Manor Indeed......
Set in Victorian England, 1851, Michelle Griep has succeeded in creating an atmospheric mystery novel of eminent readability. The protagonist, Clara Chapman, receives a mysterious invitation to spend Christmas at an English manor house. Whilst suspicious, Clara is intrigued enough to attend the calling - particularly as she has been promised a handsome sum of money should she stay at the manor for 12 days. What has poor Clara let herself in for....? Really...would you?! It's a cleverly written whodunnit with plenty of twists, turns and surprising events but, most of all, a fun read for sure. A perfect choice for the festive season. Recommended.

This book was so fun!! It started off with getting to know they 2 main characters and then kinda went into this almost who done it story. No one was murdered but that wasn't for lack of someone trying.

I loved the mystery aspect of it....who invited them to bleakly manor and who was the one who was trying to slowly get people who were there to leave for one reason or another.

I do want to know where the other characters came from but maybe we will find out in the next book and if not it's not that big of a deal

12 Days at Bleakly Manor by Michelle Griep

Rating: 5 out of 5

Story Notes

Michelle Griep’s newest series will bring delight to her readers as she shares fictional accounts of Charles Dicken’s famed books, beginning with 12 Days at Bleakly Manor – inspired from the oft-overlooked classic Bleak House.

A great fan of Charles Dickens and the Victorian Era, I have both read and watched every book and BBC Drama created from Mr. Dicken’s stories. How exciting for me to discover that Michelle Griep was writing a series based on some of my favorite books/dramas! Bleak House is a truly wonderful story that is frequently overlooked given the popularity of “A Christmas Carol”, “Oliver Twist” and “A Tale of Two Cities” but next to “Little Dorrit” it remains my all-time favorite Dickens story. Ms. Griep offers a fictionalized account (based on the true story) of how Charles Dickens came to write “Bleak House” that was so good it earned a rarely given 5 star rating from me. Clara Chapman has spent the last year grieving both the loss of her family fortune and the fiance she believes stole the fortune and her heart. Receiving a mysterious note that offers her 500 pounds in return for staying at Bleakly Manor during the 12 Days of Christmas, Clara grasps quickly the opportunity to help herself and her aunt stay in their home. Benjamin Lane has been in gaol for over a year with no trial, no explanation, and is facing transportation for embezzling funds from two shipping companies including Clara’s family’s company. Two weeks before his ship departs he is sent a note offering him the chance at freedom and exoneration if he will spend 12 days at Bleakly Manor. Desperate to right the wrongs done to him, Benjamin agrees and is taken there immediately. But when Clara and Benjamin come face to face, will they believe the truth of what happened or is everything beyond forgiveness? Joining Clara and Benjamin at Bleakly Manor are 6 others who have been offered something they desire in exchange for remaining at the house during the full 12 Days. But with mysterious happenings occurring more often as the days pass by, the number of persons willing to remain begins to dwindle quickly. Ms. Griep did an excellent job of capturing the essence of Mr. Dickens characters. I loved her way of identifying them through their characteristics even as she gave each person an alternate name. I had fun recalling the story through new eyes and a new perspective – one that had less tragedy at the end but a perfect ending that would have made Mr. Dickens proud. His infamous way of always ensuring that everyone in his stories got “exactly what he or she deserved” is what makes me love his stories so. And Ms. Griep carried that theme well and added in a wonderful new love story that will leave her readers cheering and most satisfied. Ms. Griep also included the element of faith in her story and this served to make the story even better in my opinion. The two main characters both had to learn the incredible lessons of forgiveness and trust and further that love is willing to sacrifice one’s personal desires so that the loved one can be given what they need. This was a really wonderful story that had me looking forward to the holiday season that is fast approaching and encouraged me to be careful of prejudices and generous with kindness. I will definitely be recommending this story to others and will also purchase a hard copy at my earliest convenience. I look forward to the next books in the series, hoping they will be as delightful as this one.

12 Days at Bleakly Manor by Michelle Griep is the first book in Once Upon a Dickens Christmas. Clare Chapman lost everything nine months ago. She is surprised when she receives an invitation to spend twelve days Bleakly Manor. If Clare lasts the full duration, she will receive a sum of 500 pounds. When Clare arrives at the manor, she finds she was not the only person to receive the unusual invitation and promised something in return. Ben Lane was arrested on his way to marry Clare for a crime he did not commit. He was promised his freedom if he stays through the twelfth day of Christmas. Their anonymous host has decided that only one of the guests will win their promised prize. Which guest will last the full twelve days and what is the person willing to do to win?

12 Days at Bleakly Manor is a well-crafted and entertaining novel. It is short, but it is packed full of action and intrigue. The mystery was delightful (see if you can figure out the culprit in this one) and the characters interesting. I like the Christian beliefs expressed in the story (compassion, prayer, faith, forgiveness, second chances, God is in control, trust, and hope). The Christian theme is light but the point is gotten across. My rating for 12 Days at Bleakly Manor is 4 out of 5 stars (I liked it). The author combined Bleak House by Charles Dickens with And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie in 12 Days at Bleakly Manor. I appreciated the colorful, unique characters (especially the lady with the mice) that Ms. Griep created. I am looking forward to the next installment in Once Upon a Dickens Christmas in A Tale of Two Hearts.

12 Days at Bleakly Manor – Michelle Griep

This is the first book I have read by this author. A story taking place in the Charles Dickens victorian era, this is definitely not my normal style of reading. I was very pleasantly surprised and loved the book! It took me back to the times of playing the childhood game of Clue.

Many characters were in the book. You couldn’t put it down because you wanted to see how all the twists and turns of the book would end. The cast of characters invited by an unknown person to Bleakly Manor, has such different personalities, but all invited for the same reason – to see who would could last the entire 12 days of Christmas to win a special prize at the end of that time. Mystery, intrigue, wacky personalities, injuries, and near death experiences are all part of the book.

Former sweethearts, Clara and Benjamin are both invited. Clara and her family have lost all their wealth, and she is promised 500 pounds if she can stay the 12 days, while Benjamin, who was thrown in prison supposedly having embezzled Clara’s family’s money, is promised his freedom, should he endure the entire time. When they see each other at the Bleakly Manor, they are very shocked and the many twists and turns put them in many alarming and surprising situations.

I couldn’t wait to see who would be able to last the entire time, and to find out the person responsible for them all being invited.

I look forward to reading more books by this author. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review.

12 days At Bleakly Manor is unlike any book I have read before. It is filled with mystery, intrigue, romance, humor, quirkiness, drama, and much more. The reader is kept in suspense until all is revealed the last few chapters. There were so many twists and turns. My opinion of this book changed with each one and I had to rreserve judgement until the end. I must say over all it was a good read and had a fun storyline.
There are a wide variety of characters- many of whom are very humorous. Each came to Bleakly Manor with the hopes of winning something of value as long as they remain at Bleakly Manor for 12 days. And as their hopes and wishes are revealed, a little more is known about each character. Some will be loved and others disliked. And many of the characters are just plain quirky and humorous.
I am fascinated that this book is based on a Charles Dickens’ classic named Bleak House. 12 Days at Bleakly manor is first in a series. This was my first Michelle Griep book but it won’t be the last. I can’t wait to see what comes next in this series. I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
I posted this on Amazon, Goodreads, CBD and will search for other sites to post a review. LInks were unavailable when review was posted.

12 Days at Bleakly Manor was such a great book! The physical book is very nice. The pages have an old world feel to them and the cover has a flap that covers the pages you have already read, which is such a nice feature. The story itself is so well written. I was hooked from page one and stayed glued in right up until the end.

Clara Chapman is living with her aunt. Clara was once wealthy and was engaged but it all came crashing down when she was left at the altar. She was told her fiance had stolen all of the family's money.

Benjamin Lane has been imprisoned for a crime he did not commit. He was on his way to his wedding when he was imprisoned for embezzlement. He has been convicted and is hopeless.

Clara and Benjamin are invited to spend twelve days at Bleakly Manor. They do not know that the other will be there. There are other guests there as well. The last one remaining there on the twelfth day will be gifted with a particular need that they individually have. For Clara, it is her wealth that would be restored, for Ben it would be his freedom.

At Bleakly Manor there are colorful characters and Ben and Clara find out that they were set up, but by whom they do not know. They also discover that the love they feel for one another has not gone away. As people are eliminated one by one, Clara and Ben realize the matters of the heart is what is really important.

Fans of Charles Dickens and Agatha Christie will surely enjoy this Christmas novella. The premise is one that you are familiar with in a storyline. Strangers receive invitations to come to Bleakly Manor and the one that remains until the end will receive the prize.

But the resemblance ends there. Michelle Griep has taken those bones of an outline and fleshed them out with characters and scenarios that are fresh and interesting. As the characters are added one by one and then leave one by one you can't help but like them. They are quirky to a fault and really make the story come alive. The manor house is a perfect setting. As the story progresses it just gets creepier and creepier.

Just like a good Dickens story, when you think you have the plot figured out a turn in the story comes and takes you in a whole new direction. I was surprised and pleased with the ending which is exactly what I want in a story like this. I recommend you get this for one of those cold winter evenings that you need a good book to curl up with. You won't be disappointed.

I received a copy of this book to facilitate my review.

12 Days at Bleakly Manor by Michelle Griep is a wonderful beginning to the Once Upon a Dickens Christmas series. Having read Griep before, I was hoping for a good read and I was not disappointed. The characters were great--evocative, vibrant and likable. The story gripped me right from the start and just got better and better with twists to the plot and a delightful romance. The author brings Victorian Christmas alive as she brings out traditions such as the yule log, Boxing Day and wassail (for which she leaves a link to a favorite recipe!) Mystery, mishaps, and missing mice all add to this delightful tale. The mysteries just kept piling up in a great heap and sometimes all the characters had were questions...no answers as to what was happening. The author has a definite thread of faith in God woven throughout the story, reminding readers that He is a God who loves to give His children second chances. 12 Days at Bleakly Manor is a captivating book and I can't wait to read more in the series.

This book is an interesting Christmas story. The story takes place in the time frame that Charles Dickens would have written and has a Dickens feel to it.

While we kind of know how the book will turn out based on the characters focused on, it is interesting to see how we get to that point. Our basic story is told through the eyes of a woman left at the altar and now is destitute due to the fact that her husband to be who has allegedly stolen money from the family business as well as from the man himself, who is in prison. Both of them are invited to a mansion and if they or one of the other guests can stay the 12 days of Christmas, then they will get what they want the most in life. Only one of the group can get it.

What would you do to get what you want the most in life. Would you kill or hurt someone? One by one the residents leave for various reasons. Who will be there in the end?

It is a clean book with just a little bit of a passionate kiss from a couple who were to be married. For that reason it could be recommended for any age. I would have no problems with recommending this to any one who wants a short interesting read. of a Christmas story.

A wonderful second chance mystery romance, set during the Christmas season. This was so well-written as a cross between Charles Dickens and Agatha Christie, where a set of unique characters are invited to Bleakly Manor for the season by a mysterious host. If they stay the entire twelve days, they will receive what their heart most desires. For some that is money, for others it is companionship. But for our main hero and heroine it is freedom from the lies and deceit that has split them apart. The tension was kept high when mysterious things started to happen to the guests, and I was turning pages as quickly as I could to see who the villain in the piece was and who the mysterious host was. Michelle Griep is quickly becoming an auto-buy author for me!

12 Days at Bleakly Manor by Michelle Griep is a Christmas retelling of the Dickens classic Bleakly Manor. I started this story with zero expectations but quickly fell in love with the writing style of Michelle Griep, the mystery surrounding the manor and its guests, and the jilted romance between Ben and Clara. It reminds me a little of Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None minus the murdering of course.

Clara is a young woman who has lost everything in the last year. On Christmas Eve the year prior she was to wed a man who not only left her at the alter but was arrested for stealing her family’s fortune, leaving her destitute and at the mercy of her older brother and aunt. Clara has hardened herself since that time, but her mind never strays too far from the thoughts of her fiancé and what he done. She’s angry, bitter, yet accepted what has befallen her.

Ben breaks my heart. This is a man who has spent a year in jail thinking his beloved put him there and is living the high life without him. This is a man wrongly accused who has been sentenced to transfer to Australia and a work camp there. Ben is angry and it’s his need for revenge that keeps him going. The kind man he once was is missing and his heart is full of anger.

Then both Clara and Ben receive an anonymous letter inviting them to spend the Christmas holidays at Bleakly Manor. If they stay the full 12 day holiday, each will receive what they want most. For Ben, that’s a full pardon and release. For Clara, it’s the money that was stolen from her a year earlier. Neither knows the other will be at the manor until they arrive which creates some fantastic dramatic irony as the reader knows thanks to the alternate POVs. On arrival, Ben and Clara are faced with what happened a year prior and forced to acknowledge the past and who may have wronged them.

In addition to Clara and Ben there are other guests who have also been promised their own heart’s desires, and it becomes a competition to see who will be left on Christmas Day. I LOVED the mystery surrounding the manor, the guests, their desires, and their host. It was a suspenseful read with just the right amount of romance to balance it out. If you enjoy Victorian era fiction, I highly recommend this holiday tale!

On my blog on 12/13/17

Clara lost the love of her life and her family's fortune nine months ago. Now living with her aunt she is given an opportunity of a lifetime. All she has to do is stay at Bleakly Manor for the 12 days of Christmas and then she will get 500 pounds. With nothing left to lose she takes the chance and on arrival, she meets the other six guests
(Mr. Minnow, Mr. Pocket, Miss Scurry, Mademoiselle Pretents, and Mr. Tallgrass) all promised something different if they stay for the 12 days. With the owner of the house nowhere in sight and only a few members of staff, the guests wonder what exactly they are supposed to do during their time at Bleakly Manor. Each new days bring them a different task to complete and possibly new risks as well.

One thing that Clara was not expecting to happen was for her ex-fiancee Ben (we also get to see things from his point of view) to be there as well wanting his own freedom in exchange for making it to the end.

Overall I really liked this story. The mystery of why they were there and then the mystery that was just Clara and Ben's that shows why he had been arrested and charged with something he says he didn't do. The other guests I found to be enjoyable and at times it reminded me of the movie Clue (one of my all-time favorites). 12 Day's at Bleakly Manor is very fast paced and one that I did not want to put down. I would consider this a must read and it really made me happy to see the real 12 days of Christmas that happen after Christmas instead of before. (can we make that a thing again, please? The time after Christmas is always so sad when all the decorations come down.) I can't wait for the next book to see what happens and if Clara and Ben will be in that one as well.

"There was freedom if he stayed. Revenge if he didn't."

What a fun Christmas story! I think this is probably the most delightful and enjoying Christmas story I've read yet!

Full of Dickens-y things--including the characters and setting, with a story line reminding me of Agatha Christie, if you like this style, you will be sure and enjoy this book!

I say Agatha Christie because it made me think of that one book of hers, I think it's "And Then There Were None" where there are so many characters summoned to a certain location, and one by one they are removed....that's the kind of story we've got here!

Clara is caring for her elderly aged aunt and they are almost to the point of poverty when she receives a mysterious note summoning her to Bleakly Manor, promising that if she can stay for the entire Twelve Days of Christmas, she is to be the winner of a large sum of money.

When she arrives, she discovers among the guests none other than her former fiancee, Ben Lane. They have both been thinking the worst of each other, blaming the other for their misfortunes.

They are given a second chance, through the mysterious circumstances at this remote manor.

Charming and intriguing are only a few words I chose to describe this story!

Such a charming, Christmassy read that is rather gothic, distinctly odd in its own right but nonetheless, whimsical! I loved it.
It was something unlike any book I've read before- what with the plethora of unique characters and storyline. I also loved the sweet symbolism's and gifts each person received- or didn't- as the mystery unfolded.
It's such a good read- especially the week before Christmas!
And of course, my only complaint is I didn't get more time to see Ben & Clara's relationship play out more!!! I can't wait for book 2- the excerpt at the end of the book reeled me right in like a sea bass :)

Okay, right off let me say this is different than any Christmas book I have read. And that’s not a bad thing! Full of twists and turns, it will keep you guessing to the end. Plus it includes a sweet romance.

The characters are fairly well developed. I would have liked to have gotten to know them a bit better, but Griep did very well considering it is a novella. She did give us a lot of description of the manor, and other places the characters went.

If you enjoy Victorian England, Agatha Christie, and Charles Dickens, you will enjoy 12 Days at Bleakly Manor. I appreciated the historical notes at the end and look forward to Book 2.

I received a complimentary copy of this book but was not required to leave a review.

12 Days At Bleakly Manor by Michelle Griep is a delightful historical Christian Christmas tale that is indeed to be savoured by the reader.
The tale is steeped in Christmas traditions that will warm the reader's heart. It is a wonderful story that will be one to revisit annually. A cross between A Christmas Carol and an Agatha Christie mystery, the reader is in for a real treat. we are entertained and guessing throughout.
There are choices to be made. Are we motivated by love of people? Or money? Where is our treasure?
The novel is also about hope. Hope restored is a beautiful thing.
12 Days At Bleakly Manor was a unique read in a traditional style, very reminiscent of its 1850 English setting. A wonderful Christmas tale that I can highly recommend.

12 days at Bleakly Manor

This was my first book by Michelle Griep that I have read. I will be reading more of her books. I look forward to the next in this series. A group of people is invited to Bleakly Manor during Christmas and a few days after. A very unique group. The main character Clara is the caregiver for her aunt but her aunt insists she goes, also there is Ben her former fiancé. I loved how it all played out and one of best Christmas books I have read this year. A quote from the book I just had to put in my review, her aunt speaking to Clara, “ Worrying doesn’t stop the bad from happening. It keeps you from enjoying the good.”. I had never heard it put that way before, it just stood out to me.

Rated PG because of subject matter

A superb read. Romance, mystery, intrigue, and some snow, ice, cold rooms and weird cuisine.

Although you've got tones of Bleak House (Dickens) and a plot reminiscent of Agatha Christie's Ten Little Indians, you don't have to read those stories to get full enjoyment of this book.

I just love howMichelle Griep delicately develops the characters. Clara is the main character and was left at the altar by Benjamin who is also invited to spend Christmas at the manor along with some rather fun, weird characters who are all promised some fabulous something if they are the last one at the manor on the 12th day of Christmas. Ben was wrongfully imprisoned and thought Clara had betrayed him. Clara thought Ben had betrayed her family and impoverished her by stealing their fortune. The other characters some tangles to unweave as well.

You get a wonderful character study of each one as their stories unfold.

I enjoyed every word of this story. It's a keeper and worthy of 5 of 5 stars.

I love Christmas, and I love a good cozy mystery and this book has both! Ms. Griep has talented hands and created a story that not only captured me instantly, but kept me hooked on this book the entire time. Her twists and turns, her characters, her messages woven through out the book, truly made for a wonderful, one sitting read!

Clara and Ben are chiseled wonderfully for their roles. Clara, stood up at the altar, and Ben, the one who caused the pain. I wanted to throttle Ben a time or two but if he wasn’t the way he was, I wouldn’t have loved the story half as much! These two come to life among the walls of Bleakly Manor and the story unfolds in a most fascinating way!

I definitely recommend this book to all who want a wonderful, clean romantic story, that is pieced together among a Christmas mystery. It’s 4 star worthy and one of my favorite Christmas stories of 2017! I am looking forward to adding the print version to my keeper shelf and to reading more amazing books like this in the future from the talented Michelle Griep! Bravo!

Slip back in time to the mid-1800s and find yourself caught up in suspense and intrigue as a variety of English citizens are summoned to a manor at Christmas. Each is promised a reward of something longed for if they remain twelve days. Sounds simple, right? But danger and conflict may drive them all away before time expires. Who has woven this web and how could the person know so much about the individuals invited? I enjoy mysteries and historicals, so this definitely fit the bill for a fun read that kept me guessing who was behind this scheme and how it would all end. It would be a great read any time of year, but perfect for wintertime relaxing by a fire. The characters are believable and the situation beckons turning the page to discover what will occur next. Secrets abound. Can you figure it all out before the protagonists learn the answers?

I absolutely LOVE this book. I know, that is strong wording, but it's true. I was hooked as soon as met Miss Scurry and her pet mice. I love how she has them trained. This book is full of characters and they each have been summoned to stay for twelve days. The one who sticks it out wins. They were all offered different incentives, including Clara, and her ex-fiance. The man who stood her up at the altar, and until now, she had no idea why. The Christian themes are in place, but not in the forefront where it overrides the story. Instead, it supports characters and aids in the mystery that needs to be solved.

I really look forward to another book by this author and have followed Griep so that I get updates about future books.

My copy came from Celebrate Lit. My review is my own, left of my own free will.

An intriguing story, filled with the personality of Charles Dickens, and with the mysterious plot twists of Agatha Christie. The perfect combination!

When a cryptic invitation arrives, twenty-five year-old Clara Chapman, has a decision to make. To spend the twelve days of Christmas at a home she's never heard of, by an unknown solicitor. Why would she choose to do this? For a hefty sum of money, which she desperately needs.

What she doesn't know is that others are expected at Bleakly House too, including none other than her fiancé who left her at the altar. Yet what he's been through in the past nine months is more grueling than Clara could have imagined. Ben Lane is looking for redemption and freedom, and he can only hope that the miraculous Christmas riddle of Bleakly Manor will save him.

It reads like a perfectly delightful Victorian novel, with some Gothic type elements (things going awry in that great big manor). Which of the manor's visitors would purposely be sabotaging the holiday event?

“The mysteries are starting to pile up in a great heap, are they not?”
- 12 Days at Bleakly Manor (Chapter 13)

Faith: There are some excellent elements of faith brought in, and I can love the book all the more for it.

Romance: It is kept mostly very sweet – just one particularly passionate kiss. But I really loved how even though it's a romance story, there's still so much adventure and puzzles to keep you busy with the rest of the plot too.

Cons? Almost none. There are a couple of phrases that used several times, which seemed a bit too repetitive for me.

Bottom line? The chapters just flew by with all the Victorian jargon and very British traditions. It was all too wonderful while the story lasted. And now I just can't wait to get my hands on book #2 in the Once Upon a Dickens Christmas series, next year!

Can someone please take me back to 1850 in London, so that I may share this exciting experience with Clara? Oh my goodness what a creative storyline! The author had me right from the very start, trying to figure out just who did invite Clara to Bleakly Manor, and why? As she arrived and other characters were introduced, my interest heightened even more. The grand setting combined with twist, turns, and let’s face it – fun, made this a wonderful Christmas read. Or any time of year really.

Michelle Griep did a wonderful job of holding my attention through the entire story. There was so much going on that there was no time for sleep! I needed to solve the mystery, and I needed to see just who was behind all the strange things that were happening. And let’s face it, when you stick two characters together that had an abrupt ending to their relationship, there is bound to be some tension and excitement. And yes, the author delivered there also!

I recommend that you read this book immediately. Okay, if you don’t have time, then read it soon. It will be worth your time. And once you find the last words of the book, you will sigh, and begin the countdown for book number two!

I didn't quite know what to expect when I started this book, which is always fun because I start out with an open mind and enjoy the surprises on my reading journey. Clara and Ben and the other characters that are invited to Bleakly Manor don't know what to expect either which enhanced the mysteriousness of the event and the secret benefactor. While Clara and Ben's reunion is a bit rocky, I loved seeing them reconcile and reignite their love, while the rest of the plot turns into a cozy mystery with increasing danger and mishaps that threaten the occupants. A fun holiday story with elements of suspense and romance!

I have no shame in admitting that ANY book that makes reference to Dickens, Austen, Shakespeare, or several other prominent historical figures, automatically makes its way to the top of my reading list. Hence the reason I decided to read this one during an extremely hectic time of year.

Michelle Griep captures, not only the essence of the time period, but the feel and eccentricities of Charles Dickens as well. With a mystery afoot and romantic tensions filling each page, you will quickly devour this story.

A novella that is just shy of 200 pages in length, it is a quick and easy read, and the perfect story for the season. A unique setting and a brilliant idea, Michelle Griep has me hooked for the rest of the series! Unfortunately, we have to wait until Fall 2018 for the next installment.

This Christmas story, sure to one day be a classic, kept me intrigued right up until the end. What a great Christmas movie this would make with its blend of quirky characters! Names that almost seemed to be made up by the characters themselves had me chuckling. Names like Miss Scurry, Mr. Minnow, Inspector Pocket, Mademoiselle Pretents, and Mr. Tallgrass. Each were at Bleakly Manor by invitation and a promise of 500 pounds if they stuck it out for 12 days. After all were assembled including Clara Chapman and Ben Lane, the butler announced that only one would be receiving the monetary award, the last one left in the manor. Like on a game show almost, accidents kept happening, one by one numbers dwindled as some left. For such a fine manor, heat was scarce, and food was almost non-existent, and what little was served was very undesirable. The mystery of who the host was and the feeling of eyes staring wherever they went kept an eerie feeling about the rooms. I found myself holding my breath many times as strange and unexplained things began to happen. This was my kind of Christmas story!

12 Days at Bleakly Manor by Michelle Griep is a fun Christmas read. With its Victorian setting and a big nod to Charles Dickens, it captures the spirit of the season. This novella has quirky characters galore (with equally quirky names a la Dickens), a heartwarming message of second chances, and sweet romance just perfect for a long winter night’s reading experience. This one is a recommended read!

Clara Chapman was left at the altar months before this cold December. With her fortune gone, stolen she believes by her fiancé, she is living in reduced circumstances. An invitation to Bleakly Manor for the Twelve Nights of Christmas celebration promises a way out of her financial difficulties — if she stays the full 12 days. Benjamin Lane was arrested on the way to his wedding and has been held without trial awaiting transportation to Australia. He has become bitter and vengeful, but a chance to be released and restored to society has him also at Bleakly Manor. Clara and Ben, along with 8 other guests, are all hoping for their deepest wishes to come true.

A bit A Christmas Carol and a bit Then There Were None, 12 Days at Bleakly Manor has all the ingredients for a quick, quirky, and thoroughly satisfying read. The characters provide amusement and intrigue as the mysterious Master of the house manipulates the action. Odd occurrences and threats put them in danger, and they and the reader never know who is to blame. The novella is filled with Victorian details, especially those that surrounded the Christmas celebrations of England. I really enjoyed the trip back in time. The romance is filled with obstacles of betrayal, hurt feelings, and misunderstandings, but also the promise of love restored. When all seems chaos, the characters depend on a God that is in control.

12 Days at Bleakly Manor is the first in Griep’s Once Upon A Dickens Christmas series, and it has definitely made me want more. A great start for a promising series!

Recommended.

Audience: adults.

What could possibly happen in just 12 days?

Michelle Griep has been on my list of want-check-out authors for quite awhile. I've heard a lot of great things about her historical fiction from a variety of people. Then I saw the blurb for this book and decided that this would be the perfect one to start with, after all it is the Christmas season and the book sounded so interesting.

What a story to start with! 12 Days At Bleakly Manor has it all: mystery, danger, romance, quirky characters, a house with secrets of its own, and a lovely holiday setting. I had a fun time reading this book and will definitely be looking for more from this author. I enjoyed trying to puzzle everything out and I was in for some real surprises along with hero and heroine.

12 Days At Bleakly Manor is great story of redemption and second chances. Each of Michelle Griep's sometimes peculiar characters is searching for something, whether good or bad, and all of them will find it, and more, on a strange holiday in a rather odd English manor. What will You find this Christmas.....?

This is a wonderful tale of unexpected twists, suspense, mystery and an air of romance. Set in England in the 1800's and with references to Charles Dickens, the story was well crafted and the descriptions of Bleakly Manor brought the story to life for me.

The characters were a variety of some quirky, some cold and calculating, and then Clara (the main character) brought sweetness and caring to the mix. They were all summoned to spend 12 days at the manor and the last one to stay there wins their prize. When you add the fact that none of them knew there would be anyone else there, it made for a fun read, especially when mysterious happenings start to take place.

The story was a cross between Dickens and Agatha Christie, but pulled off well. I can't wait to read the next one in this Once Upon a Dickens Christmas series.

What my family had to say about the book 12 Days at Bleakly Manor by Michelle Griep as we enjoyed this as a family read aloud. It was intriguing, mysterious, and scary in parts. It was superfluously majestic and makes you want to read on. It was also surprising, captivating, and very well written. I really liked that it brought out an element of forgiveness in a freeing way. This book has all these things and more to it!! If you’re looking for a great Christmas read, you’ll want to remember to check this one out.

Everything about this book appealed to me when I first saw complimentary advanced reader copies of it being offered - I love the cover and I love a good historical mystery. I didn't even see the part about it being the first book in a new series, Once Upon a Dickens Christmas. I'm actually kind of glad I missed that part because I might have decided not to read it because I haven't actually read very many Dickens books, and none since high school which was a very long time ago!

But I would have had nothing to worry about as this book stands alone perfectly well. The author has created amazing characters and a clever and mysterious plot line. I enjoyed reading it so much and had a very hard time putting it down because I just had to know what was going to happen!

This book was very interesting. It was full of mystery and intrigue and I never knew what was going to happen next. I had an immediate suspect for all the incidents at the manor, but I quickly shifted my suspicions and they turned out to be correct. I don't think it was easy to figure out, I just made a lucky guess. As all the pieces started to fall into place, I was excited to finally find out what was going on just like Ben and Clara. I liked the faith thread woven through the story and the growth that the main characters exhibited. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

Michele Griep has a new fan! Fans of historical mysteries should welcome this series. It's a realistic portrayal of Victorian England spiced with humor and intrigue. Some characters are quirky enough to almost go beyond believabity, but the two main characters - Clara and Ben - quickly work their way into the reader's heart. I look forward to seeing what happens in the next book! Thanks to Barbour Publishing and NetGalley for overnight Ccess before publication.

This book was so very interesting !! It has many plot twists.
I do like how Ben and Clara are continually brought together.
I also found how this whole getting together at the manor very interesting as well. At the end of the book the reader will find out how everything was out into motion and why and by whom. I will not spoil this for the reader. Another surprise is how a very famous author of that time period is part of this as well.

If you have not had the opportunity to read a Christmas book this month, I highly recommend checking this story out. The title alone caught my eye, because the words "Dickens Christmas" are penned underneath a beautiful manor that is dusted with snow. Yet I was also intrigued by the mysterious synopsis. How can danger and peril be attached to such a lovely setting--and at Christmas time? The conflicts that arise within the pages of this text will definitely surprise the reader, and will leave a person longing for the next book in the series.

Curious invitations are sent out to a random set of people--including Clara Chapman and Benjamin Lane. Once Clara enters the manor, she wonders why such an odd group of individuals are spending Christmas together. Since she has nothing to offer anyone, she does not understand why someone would bother to invite her. Her life has taken turns she never wanted to entertain, and Clara feels she is at the bottom of everything, because she knows she is one step away from poverty.

Benjamin has spent his days in prison--falsely accused. He is determined to find out and understand why he was charged, because he does not even know the details surrounding his case. Strangely, instead of being taken to his punishment, he is summoned to a manor in the country. Things grow even more difficult when he realizes Clara Chapman is among the crowd. Anger, resentment, and confusion hit him almost instantly, and he wonders how he will endure the next twelve days.

The journey these people take is quite incredible and there are many surprises in store for the reader. Grace and forgiveness mark the path for some while understanding and defeat lie in store for others. Considering one's own personal gain governs the choices many characters make, which will help the reader ponder what the Christmas season should be about--giving instead of receiving.

Happy reading and Merry Christmas!

I may be dense, or just need to brush up on my classic literature, but I didn't realize that this book was related to a Dicken's classic until I was reading about the next in the series at the end. This story is the same style as the movie Clue. I love Clue. All of the essential reasons of why I love Clue, Michelle did in such a creative fashion in this story.

I can't say I was suprised by the ending, but that is because I suspected EVERYONE at some point, it's the nature of the story arc. But, I also was suprised because it was brought together and the motivations behind it weren't what I was puzzling together in my imagination. The mystery of who will die next and who was behind it all is what kept me turning pages becuase I had to know. Also the anxiety of knowing there could be only one winner, but we have both a hero and a heroine! I want them both to win! It was agonizing.

For regular readers of reviews, you will be happy to know I DID NOT read the end until I got there. In this case, I just knew it would ruin the mystery and allure of everything and Michelle wrote it in such a way with clues coming steadily that I didn't feel the all consuming desire to know how it turned out before I got there. So, that should tell you something. If you're a fan of mystery, give it a try.

Side note: If you're looking for a fluffy cheery Christmas read, this isn't it. It's a bit morose, but a very satisfying read.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are honest and my own.

Reading this book was like having a cup of tea with an old friend. Loved the character development - I felt like I knew each of them and was rooting for my favorites. Plot was deep enough to keep the reader guessing but not so complicated it was hard to keep track of the characters. Am a fan and will look for more books by the author.

12 Days at Bleakly Manor #1 Once Upon a Dickens Christmas
by Michelle Griep

A number of eccentric characters agreeing to stay at the English manor home, Bleakly Manor, for 12 days is not your usual Christmas tale. The characters did not know each other prior to arriving at the manor with the exception of Clara Chapman and Benjamin Lane. Their past is one of heartache and betrayal and lends tension to an already tense atmosphere. There are surprises in store for the visitors as well as the reader. I especially liked the surprise at the end. A fascinating story filled with intrigue, suspense and mystery, learning to let go of past hurts and trust again and forgive, a little romance and learning what matters most….you will have to read it find out what that is.

"A mysterious invitation to spend Christmas at an English manor home may bring danger...and love?

What matters most is what Christmas is all about . . . love.

Pour a cup of tea and settle in for Book 1 of the Once Upon a Dickens Christmas series--a page-turning Victorian-era holiday tale--by Michelle Griep, a reader and critic favorite."

A manor house? Christmas? Charles Dickens? This is on my TBR pile come December.

Opening line:
"Christmas or not, there was nothing merry about the twisted alleys of Holywell."

Clara Chapman and Benjamin Lane were both in places of hurt, anger and disappointment. Clara was abandoned at the alter and Benjamin was unjustly sent to prison, both believing the other to be the cause of the pain.
Clara receives a strange invitation to live at Bleakly Manor for the Twelve Days of Christmas and at the end she will be rewarded financially.
Ben receives the same invite while living in a cell. He jumps at the chance to get out. His reward will be his freedom. But he must stay the duration for the reward too.
There are other house guests as well and in true Dickens fashion have names that totally fit their personalities. They were fun to read.
But all is not as it seems as "accidents" start to happen and one guest after another leaves. Who will be the last person standing?
I love Christmas stories and books. Because I love them I will forgive the inconsistencies and loose threads and neatly tied up coincidences in the story.

Just sit back with a cup of cocoa and enjoy the story.

Thanks to netgalley for the read.

I have to admit that I haven’t read either “Bleak House” by Charles Dickens or “Then There Were None” by Agatha Christie as mentioned by other reviewers but I enjoyed “12 Days at Bleakly Manor” nonetheless. And yes, I would like to read both of those books if only to understand their references here.

The gorgeous cover prepares the reader for a delightful Victorian Christmas adventure with just a hint of darkness inside but oh my, some of the characters and happenings were quite unexpected. It was such fun watching what transpired and anticipating what might happen next. Everything about this book was so clever and I loved the surprises at the end!

I cannot say more because I fear I might give everything away. Just take my word for it, do yourself a favor, and pick up a copy of “12 Days at Bleakly House” for your holiday reading. I warn you though that you might not want to wait that long to read it.

An unusual Victorian Christmas story!

This book is filled with well developed and very strange characters. I love the two main ones, Clara and Ben. As we get to know them, as well as, the rest of the assorted house guests at Bleakly Manor a mystery starts to present itself.

Clara and Ben are the only two that know each other before arriving at the manor. It was interesting to see how their past affects their stay at the manor. Their interaction with each of the other house guests was very interesting. At times I wanted to tell some of them to just shut up.

This was a fun book to read and I’m looking forward to seeing what else the author comes up with for this series.

I received a complimentary copy of this book through NetGalley. I have chosen to write this review to express my personal opinion.

I love Charles Dickens and I really love pieces which give props to the old classics. This is a perfect marriage of both intrigue and the classic style of Agatha Christie and Charles' himself. I was so happy to review this for the publishers and hope there is indeed another adventure in this realm.
