Description

Travel as a concept is universally attractive and the opportunities for fun, engaging branding and marketing in this sector are arguably limitless. Glamour and appeal aside, travel is a hugely competitive, multi-million pound industry and marketers of all sectors can learn important lessons from it. Catering for mass consumer travel, from business travel and adventure travel, to specialist and niche interests, the providers of escape have been impacted as much by technology as they have by the changing habits and desires of travellers themselves. The Escape Industry presents an expert view of travel marketing and branding, focusing particularly on how travel has been utterly transformed for both consumers and providers since the beginning of the 21st century. Mark Tungate focuses on some of the travel industry's most famous brands and shares how all marketers can learn from the industry's rich experience of digital transition.

Tungate traces the evolution of this fascinating industry, from nineteenth century trailblazers such as Thomas Cook and The Ritz, to today's innovations such as TripAdvisor, Couchsurfing and Airbnb, and explores the branding secrets that have enabled them to survive. A lively read full of incidents, anecdotes, unexpected encounters and a ground-breaking report from the final frontier and space tourism, The Escape Industry is at the cutting edge of this attractive sector, examining some of the biggest names in the industry. It will take travel and tourism students, as well as marketing and branding practitioners, on a journey to the heart of a rapidly changing business.

As someone who worked as a travel agent for over 10 years and who still loves to travel I found this a great book with a ton of historical fact about the tourism industry, but this book presented in a very readable format.  The book is broken down into short histories of the different  segments of the travel/tourism industry with plenty of the "good and bad" of the pioneers from the first transatlantic liners to the future of the space tourism all covered.

Travel the world in the comfort of your chair through this book that looks at the way the travel industry has been developed by a range of innovative brands and leading companies over time.

This is a different kind of book that just oozes out knowledge and interesting bits of information, but it is not a typical textbook. Far from it! It looks at the development of the travel business, aided by new technologies (at the time) and changing social situations. The astute reader may even be able to transplant elements of this industry knowledge into their own business sector. The travel industry is a good microcosm of business, from the smallest single-person company to the global giant, covering niche to mainstream. What is more, it is very competitive, subject to change, disruption and variable tastes. Even in the past couple of decades there has been a lot of change and disruption to what is, essentially, a fairly simple range of business activities – selling access to transport, accommodation, entertainment and related elements.

However, this book is not just an appreciation of a global business sector. It looks at how a very diverse series of businesses have been ‘aided’ by digital transition and transformation. This sector has not stood still, although the more-recent pace of change has been especially noticeable, challenging and yet potentially giving. It is a book to enjoy, to study and to dive into. It demands a sequential read and you would be advised to give it your undistracted attention if you want to get the most out of it.

For a layperson it can be an interesting, curious read. For the industry professional it will be all that, and a lot more besides. It is backed up by many references for deeper, further reading as required.

It is one of those books that you should check out, even if you don’t perceive a direct need for it.
