Kitty's War

I am typically a contemporary romance junkie. However, after reading the book blurb and some of the reviews about this novel, I knew I had to experience Kitty's War for myself. This story was quite meaningful and thought-provoking, while keeping me on the edge of my seat for most of the narrative. Barbara Whitaker is a new author for me, and I plan on reading more of her work.

Even though she is not yet 21, school teacher Kitty Greenlee wants to help win the war, so she joins the Women’s Army Corps. Her older brother Milton is a solider, and Kitty wants to see for herself that he is alright. The secretarial pool welcomes Kitty with open arms, even though the women that bunk and work with her keep their distance. Kitty is smart and quickly moves up through the enlisted ranks.

Lieutenant Ted Kruger is a bomber navigator. He loves his job, but the danger is overwhelming, especially after getting injured and losing his crew during an attack. Kitty has always been Ted's lifeline, even before he was drafted. Now they are fighting the same war and falling in love simultaneously. After ten months in a POW camp, Ted is finally free. His goal is to find Kitty and make her his forever.

Kitty and Ted share a special bond, and they ache for one another when they are a part. Living so far away from each other poses many obstacles, so positive thinking and snail mail helps to keep them going. Kitty matures a lot during her time overseas, while Ted realizes that love is worth fighting for. Overall, this is a solid read with likable characters and some intense situations.

Working as secretarial support to the eight airforce Kitty meets her dream man, a handsome officer Ted Kruger who wants to forget about loosing his closet friends and get back to the dangers of duty.

As the war heads towards D-Day will Ted and Kitty find themselves in danger.

I give Kitty's War four out of five stars.

“Kitty’s War” by Barbara Whitaker begins on St. Simon’s Island, Georgia when Katherine spies something in the water. Upon investigation, she finds a very handsome man in a raft, obviously having been at sea before something terrible happened to him. A naïve young girl, she finds herself thinking of him constantly as the months pass. Against her family’s wishes, Katherine (Kitty) volunteers for the WACs for duty overseas as a nurse. She runs into the man again and this time he is an airman on duty in England, but he doesn’t recognize her as his savior. Kitty’s friend, Madge is a forward flirt and captures Ted Kruger’s attention. When Ted realizes who Kitty is, they begin a romance. However, Ted is shot down over Germany and languishes in a prison camp until his escape. Can he and Kitty get back together? Is Madge the one Ted wants?

I thought this novel was well thought out and I enjoyed the descriptive way that Ms. Whitaker moves the story along. Every time I wanted to put the book down to get something else done, I just couldn’t do it. I love war-time romances set during WW II, and I loved this book.

A really good World War II romance which is paced well and gives you a real feel of the time.

I throughly enjoyed this book. I enjoy historical WW2 stories and this is the first one I've read from an American view. It tells the story of Kitty's life in the WAC. You go through the ups and downs she has during the war. Kitty joined up to follow her beloved brother Milton thinking they'd be together in England. Once she arrived Kitty found out it was going to be very different to what she expected. Milton was badly injured and sent home and Ted who she'd met and rescued in USA before joining up came back into her life only to leave again being shot down and Kitty thinking him dead. I highly recommend this book

This is a typical WW2 romance but written better than most with an eye for detail and historical accuracy. Many other reviewers have described the plot well. I would certainly buy this for my Mum who enjoys this style of literature.

This was an emotional book to read but I did enjoy it .There was a good storyline that kept me wanting to know what happens. The characters were interesting especially Kitty and l was pleased it had a happy ending. I recommend that you read this book.

I really enjoyed this book! I am love reading about World War II and the stories of ordinary people during that time. This book talks about a flyer and a secretary. They first meet when Ted is a survivor of a German bombing and Kitty drags him to shore and gets help.

Two years later, Kitty realizes immediately that Ted was the man she saved, but Ted doesn't remember her. He dates her best friend; Kitty is devastated, but she realizes that her really cares for Ted. When Ted remembers her, he begins to question his relationship with Kitty's friend. Meanwhile the war forces separation and struggles for each of the characters.

This story was a glimpse at romance within the war. The plot extends beyond the two characters and helps develop them by including more than just their relationship. Through this we get to know the characters better making their struggles more understandable.

A good read for fans of the WWII genre. This has well drawn characters and just a bit of suspense. Thanks for the ARC>.
