Description

From breakout stand-up comedian Iliza Shlesinger comes a subversively funny collection of essays and observations on the secret genius of irrational behavior.

Have you ever been pissed because you're not pretty enough, and then gotten even more pissed that someone didn't find you as pretty as you think you are? Have you ever obsessed over the size of your thighs while eating dessert, all the while saying you'll work out extra tomorrow? Or spent endless hours wondering why you have to bear the brunt of other people's insecurities? I mean, after all, I'm pretty great. Why cope with insecurities I don't already have?

That last one's just me? All right, then.

But if the rest sounds familiar, you are experiencing Girl Logic: a characteristically female way of thinking that appears contradictory and circuitous but is actually a complicated and highly evolved way of looking at the world. You end up considering every repercussion of every choice (about dating, career, clothes, lunch) before making a move toward what you really want. And why do we attempt these mental hurdles? Well, that's what this book is all about.

The fact is, whether you're obsessing over his last text or the most important meeting of your career, your Girl Logic serves a purpose: It helps push you, question what you want, and clarify what will make you a happier, better person. Girl Logic can be every confident woman's secret weapon, and this book shows you how to wield it.

Marc Maron, comedian, actor, author, and host of the popular podcast WTF with Marc Maron

"Iliza is funny, fierce, and lightning fast, but don't let all that wit and beauty fool you - she's a feminist with the heart of a mommy, a truth teller who just wants us all to feel better so we can get what we want, dammit! She's thought long and hard about why women are so hard on themselves, and she's not afraid to say she's been there herself, which has endeared her already to millions of fans. Take my advice: take her advice. Iliza is a comedian wrapped in social critic wrapped in the good friend you need."

I enjoyed this a lot. Contrary to what some people might say, you definitely don't have to already be a fan of Ilza's stand up to enjoy this. I find her supremely relatable in a best-girlfriend kind of way.

I do feel like the book got better as it went on -- especially when she spoke about past experiences that weren't about hookups. Her insight to being the only woman on tour during 'Last Comic Standing' was emotional and raw...and familiar for any woman who's had to navigate such terrain. The final chapters made the whole book worth it, I wish more of this pseudo-memoir focused on this. Sure, the silly bits on texting was funny to read but came across more vapid than informative.

Overall, Iliza is at her best when she's speaking to you like a true friend and that really came through, especially in the later chapters. It also solidified this for me: I need to see her live standup.

Let me start by saying that I'm older than the intended audience by their age over again. But, in spite of a few cringing moments that mostly have to do with what this volume says about the state of things out there for women these days, I would recommend this volume to a young woman who is looking for some support in navigating the waters of young adulthood. Overall, I found the messages to be empowering, even when I disagreed with bits here and there.

This book sounds like the perfect girls night out! You have the weird friend, the hot one who gets attention, the voice of reason, the cray cray one and finally the one who let's it all out. The one who you always love but a tiny bone in you knows that if you are playing russian roulette you'd never call her because the girl speaks truth!
Iliza draws from her own experiences and in a funny way, sometimes she's brutal, and sometimes she eases in an example that had me thinking "yeah, I've seen that with my girls" or "I've felt like that."
The writing though is not as crisp and precise as one part of me wished it was and this was mostly evident in the writer's descriptions of situations she found herself in, a part of me didn't want to read all that and kept saying "get to the point," but in some scenarios I laughed reading through her experiences.
I've never seen her live and maybe I should check out any clips of her on YouTube. I got a copy of this book from NetGalley and it had me, and if there's one thing that had in stitches was Iliza's "My handy list of clothing items that are simply never OK."

110% love Iliza and everything she does, this book was no different. Both funny and insightful, I learned a lot about myself and why girls think the way we do. I've actually met Iliza in person and this book screams her personality. Definitely a must-read for women in their 20s and older.

Bright and hilarious, just like her stand-up shows. Would recommend if you enjoyed Amy Schumer's book.

Even if you have not seen Iliza's stand up you will love this book. Iliza enters the crazy beautiful world of the female mind with a refreshing and honest look at why we think the way we do. Her stories and experiences may be completely different than mine but it was comforting to realize how similar we think through the process of life. "Like when 'Girl Logics' tells you to hold onto those clunky combat boots you bought your freshman year of high school, because YOU NEVER KNOW." It was hard to make it passed a page without chuckling out loud, and I already know so many women who need the confidence boost from Iliza's book. Sometimes we need a reminder that we are not crazy for waiting on love until after 30, and why being a guys' girl is great but we need other women in our lives too.

Insightful look at the inner workings of the female mind from one of the best comics in the business. I’ve been a long-time fan of Iliza, since her Last Comic Standing days. This book has only cemented my fan-ness and my admiration has only grown while reading this book. And now I will admire her not only for her hilariously funny stand-up but the straight-shooting, grace, and, yes, humor with which she has dealt and continues to deal with both her struggles and her triumphs.

I received a copy this book via NetGalley and have voluntarily decided to provide an honest review.

This book had me laughing out loud. This would not have been that big of a deal had I not been around other people. It is hysterical and insightful. I had seen the author's special and was not sure if this book would make me laugh like her shows. It is obvious that this was a labor of love for her. It was refreshing that it is more than just jokes. She sends the message that girls are amazing and that they can do anything. She encourages women to be confident. It is highly relatable.

Thank you NetGalley and Hachette Books for a digital copy in exchange for an honest review. I am rating this book Four Stars because it did have moments of drag but is a pretty solid read. Hilarious and empowering. Definitely worth the read.

I was already a fan of Iliza having seen her comedy specials on Netflix and on To Tell the Truth. I find her hilarious, and I feel like we would get along should we ever actually meet. This book had me cracking up and wanting all my friends to read it so that I can talk to them about it. She is not only funny but insightful and I truly enjoyed this book and think you should go pick it up even if you're not a fan of Iliza's, because I think you'll become one after you read this.

Thank you to NetGalley for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I was so pleasantly surprised at this book! I am actually not super familiar with the author, but I really want to become familiar now. This is a book that young girls should read if they want to feel understood and less alone. It was a refreshing feminist read that attempts to explain why girls think the way they do, and that we can be ridiculous in our thinking sometime, but it's okay because every girl experiences this "girl logic." I loved how Iliza related her upbringing and comedic journey to the struggles that women from varied backgrounds face. Even though our stories aren't very similar, there were a lot of parts of her triumphs and struggles that I connected with. I'm excited to see what Iliza does next!

I have enjoyed Iliza Shlesinger since I first saw her perform on THE LAST COMIC STANDING television show. She is hysterical as a stand-up comic and just as funny, if not funnier, as an author. You know a book is great when you actually laugh out loud multiple times while reading it. Highly recommended!

GIRL LOGIC BY Iliza Shlesinger attempts to explain the unexplainable, how a woman's mind works. Shlesinger's standup has always made me laugh so diving into a book she wrote interested me but I had now idea what I was getting into. The book is quite funny at times, full of Shlesinger's quick wit and random outbursts of emotion, but it's also Shlesinger's study of how a woman (especially her) applies some many different thoughts to each decision in her life and how that same woman manages to not have a neurotic breakdown several times a day.
When discussing how an entire gender thinks, it's easy to fall into the trap of stereotyping everything and then chalking up to "they are all a little crazy". Shlesinger however, while admitting that inside things might be an anarchy of emotions and thoughts, does an admirable job of explaining that this same internal anarchy helps to provide clarity and focus in women's lives. Shlesinger spends a lot of time walking through the pitfalls and false promises that come with social media connections and relationship texting, while still acknowledging and embracing that social media is a viable part of our culture and being a celebrity, perhaps more so for her than most.
Very entertaining and laugh out loud funny at times, GIRL LOGIC is unique in its ability to captivate and educate at the same time. Being married adult man, there are certain aspects of the book that I couldn't relate to, but in the end I enjoyed reading the book and will try to catch Schlesinger's standup the next time she comes through my area.
