Description

A pregnant young woman shows up at the Billodeaux ranch looking for Teddy, the handicapped adopted son of the family. Turns out Ella Sue Smalls is his half-sister looking for a place to stay until her baby is born. Good-hearted Teddy offers shelter at his very modest apartment. Though he will never be a member of the Sinners football team like his brothers, he is fiercely independent and earns his way as a freelance sports announcer and writer.

Ella has arrived at an awkward time for her brother; Teddy had just reconnected with a former cheerleader he had a crush on in high school. Injured in a tragic accident, Jessica Minvielle is hopeless and bitter about her life confined to a wheelchair. She reaches out to Teddy for help to live a full life again and salvage her career as a sports trainer. He is only too glad to show her what a man and a woman in wheelchairs can do. But, will the scheming Ella Sue come between them and ruin their chance at love?

This was such a heartwarming and original read! Whatever prompted Lynn Shurr to give both main characters a disability is a mystery for me, but she delivers a refreshing story with a gorgeous Beta hero.
The “cute and kind of sexy” hero, Teddy, is a kind, caring and gentle man, who’s a bit shy (his blushes are adorable) but not too much. He’s also a very practical man (about trivial issues and other matters, such as how a man with 'spina bifida' has sex). Lynn Shurr doesn’t sugarcoat the reality of living with a disability, she just presents the facts in a dispassionate and natural way. But there’s plenty of sexiness and sweetness.
His genuine selfishness really stands out as opposed to that of his half sister, Ella Sue, with all his protectiveness towards the blunt Ella Sue and her baby.
I enjoyed the way Teddy reconnected with his high school crush, Jessica, and helped her in the process of regaining her confidence. And the way they love his baby niece… I adored it!
There’s also a lot of lovely and a bit quirky secondary characters, including a very supportive family, and lots of showing instead of telling in this heartwarming story set in Louisiana.

An interesting g read. Characters are intense and well described. Although can be a bit whiny, like mostly everyone. They are likable enough. Teddy is a sweet and inspiring hero, his feelings for Jessica a nice facet of the book. Half the time I just wanted to slap Ella sue and tell her to wake up. A nicely paced romance that has some annoying characters that make it feel quite a long read.
