Description

Cassie Edwards, a former foster child, purchases an 1870s Victorian mansion, the one home from her childhood where she felt like part of a family. She’s spending her summer lovingly restoring it, with dreams of one day raising a family of her own here.

Rayne Tucket, a photojournalist, is haunted by the death of his best friend in Afghanistan, a death he thinks is his fault. He survives day to day. Forever is not in his vocabulary. Swearing off photography, he answers an ad for a handyman—mindless, no emotion involved.

As the two of them renovate her house, can Cassie show Rayne that love is strong enough to heal all wounds?

I thought he was an ex-con.

How could she not have recognized, as they met an hour ago at most?

Everyone should have a buttinsky best friend.

I'd be the person trapped under the wallpaper too.

This guy is seriously creepy. Go get Rayne, woman!

This is going to end badly. She might say she's okay with a short-term fling, but she's not.

Is the house haunted, because that would explain a lot.

I would have liked to be an archaeologist, or a curator.

Aw, he tried to do a nice, romantic thing and ended up making a mess.

She is way nicer than I'll ever be.

That's a helluva case of survivor's guilt.

A good story of two people trying to get on with their lives. Cassie is working on rebuilding the only home she ever felt like she belonged, and Rayne is a photojournalist, who had been over in the war, and has a lot of survivor guilt. Love them together, and enjoyed the book for the most part. Did not like his name, as I kept thinking it was a girl, and the side story of the druggy man who had been the son of her foster-mother felt a little out of place. Other than that though, I highly recommend this story and author. Good book.
