Description
A monster hunter arrives to help a rural town with its infestation, but the seething hell spawn are the least of his problems. The three lone mountains are home to a powerful witch and a primordial, maddening beast. It’ll take more than one man to eradicate the “invasive species,” but the townspeople have problems (and secrets) of their own. With man no longer at the top of the food chain, the question on everyone’s mind is, “What is man’s place in nature?” And for that matter, what is a monster’s place in nature?

This is a copy of what is on Goodreads:
I received a free copy of this book from Smith Publicity via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This MAY OR MAY NOT CONTAIN SPOILERS, depending on how you look at it.
Let me start off by saying that I liked this book. I was on the fence though between giving it a 3 or a 4. I decided to round up and go with the 4 because the majority of the story had a lot of things going for it.
There is sooooo much great stuff packed into this little book which made me feel it was rushed. It could very easily have been a 2-3 book series. I noticed that the author is going to write a novel about the events of "Pittsburgh" which is fantastic and totally necessary. I want to know what events triggered the apocalypse and how exactly the different realities/monsters exist in our world and why.
But enough on that. It's coming and I'll make sure to read it.
The mystical, magical and the all the monsters..... nailed it. The descriptions of all of the monsters was so in depth that I could easily visualize them. I had no problem imagining myself on the hunt with Del and Nigel and listening to Del explain how and why the creatures acted like they did. What to do and what not to do. You know, being prepared for anything.
Anyways, moving on to the characters. They were great. I loved their stories though I could have done with a bit more of their backgrounds. I liked how the author would move from character to character throughout the chapters to provide little snippets of who they are with a few surprises along the way (of course!). There were SO many characters however, that it became a bit hard to keep track of everyone. Despite their abundance, I became attached to some and then I found myself having "Game of Thrones" moments where my favourite characters would be snuffed out. And not even really going out in a blaze of glory...just kind of an underwhelming gun shot, being stabbed, falling off a cliff, killed by accident, etc. The epic battle at the end was somewhat of a wash as there was just too much going on, with too many characters dying in insignificant ways, that I lost track and stopped feeling any sense of loss or remorse for anyone. I found myself thinking "what could you possibly do now with who's left, and at this point, does it matter?"
I liked the elements of mystery throughout the book and piecing people's relationships together. The setting and idea for the book were fantastic. My major issue with it was really only the underwhelming ending. And just to be clear, what I consider to the ending was not the last chapter with the Boogeyman in it. Speaking of that last chapter.....maybe I missed something but how does any of that final chapter with the Boogeyman have anything to do with the story? Maybe I need to re-read it because I was on the tired side this morning. I'll give it another go and update this review if my opinion on it changes.
I encourage people to definitely pick up this book and read it. It's good. It's fresh, creative, and interesting. The pace is good and it's really impressive how much is packed into it. My catalogue of monsters has definitely increased and I'm not sure I'll ever look at a dog or a monkey the same way again. Really good debut novel and I'm looking forward to reading the next one.
