Description

Previously published in the US as The Girl in the Castle.

The #1 international bestseller about the enduring bond between three women and the castle they will never forget.

Their lives were mapped out ahead of them. But love and war will change everything...

It’s the early 1900s and Castle Deverill stands staunchly untouched by time, hidden away in the rolling Irish hills. Within the castle walls, three friends have formed a close bond: affluent, flame-haired Kitty Deverill; Bridie Doyle, Kitty’s best friend and daughter of the castle’s cook; and Celia Deverill, Kitty’s flamboyant English cousin. They’ve grown up together, always sheltered from the conflict embroiling the rest of the country. But when Bridie learns of a secret Kitty has been keeping, their idyllic world is forever torn apart.

Later, the three women scatter to different parts of the globe. Kitty must salvage what she can before Castle Deverill and everything she has ever known is reduced to ash. Songs of Love and War is an epic generational saga about the lasting bonds of true friendship and the powerful ties we all have to the place we call home.

Songs of Love and War is a picturesque family saga that spans 15 years, set in the rolling Irish hills. The characters throughout the novel were well developed, along with their relationships with each other and the intricately developed inter-generational story that Montefiore unpacks.

The Irish War of Independence is a topic and setting I have only just recently come to enjoy, and it's a refreshing change to many over-used historical backdrops authors choose when it comes to historical fiction. The characters within Songs of Love and War interact well with this backdrop, along with the timeless, lovable landscape of Ireland and the New World itself.

Montefiore's Songs of Love and War has a sort of classic taste to it, in the sweeping, epic saga style that encompasses 15 years, a family's story, loss, love, and heartbreak. It is quite the adventure from start to finish, and although a bit long, is well written and developed.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC for a fair and honest review.

Great novel depicting the struggle between the English and the Irish in Ireland during the early 1900’s . The book shows also the class struggles and how so many regardless of class loved their country and fought for it’s independence. The characters were diverse but each brought uniqueness to the novel, especially strong willed Kitty and Birdie. Some Irish folklore and of course the scenery makes this an interesting historical read. The book really took off half way through when events begin to unfold . Thanks netgalley.
