A Marriage of Necessity: Rules of Refinement Book Four

This was a short read for me. I did enjoy the story I wished it was a little longer. The characters meshed fairly well. My only wish is that there was more to the story. This book was provided to me by NetGalley for a honest review.

A Marriage of Necessity keeps your attention although it is a novella. The marriage between Kennedy and Anne is a forced marriage on both sides. Anne needs the funds to save her family. Her only offering is the title that comes with her through her family name. Kennedy needs to marry to protect his sister, Rose, from their father.

Kennedy is in a really awkward position of trying to find his sister before their father forces her into a horrible marriage. In addition, his former lover married his father instead of him, now she is his step-mother and a horrible person.

Anne is a very strong personality and stands up for herself in all situations. (I love her spunk.) Kennedy seemed to admire her when he first met her. He begins to admire her more each day. Anne’s mother warned him that Anne was a force.

This is a great story for a light-hearted read with that sweetness needed in historical romances.

I did enjoy this story but felt it could have been improved by being longer and developing the characters interaction with each other. The characters were such an interesting group, Anne was a forthright, feisty lady who was very likeable as was Kennedy, in spite of his stubbornness! Then there was Jacqueline, Kennedy’s stepmother, not likeable but a character like this is always needed. Not to mention the father, I loved the way Anne dealt with him. It was a fast paced story that included romance. I received a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

The novella “A Marriage of Necessity” explains the premise of the storyline with Kennedy Douglas, Viscount Buchanan, forced into marriage with Anne, Viscountess. Kennedy’s father has coerced him to marry otherwise his sister will be forced to marry an older, vicious man. Anne, desperate to keep the family home agrees to marry and produce an heir.
There were many great ideas in this story but did need to be expanded upon. With more attention to detail, the romance between the couple would have been more realistic. Both characters had some depth particularly Anne, who is never afraid to speak her mind.
A short but interesting read.

This was a sweet read and I enjoyed the romance. I normally don't like novellas since they're so short, and while that is still a complaint I have, this read felt like it was just the right length. All in all, if you're looking for a short, sweet read, this one is for you.

My Thoughts:

I enjoyed reading this novella. It is well written and has characters that both baffled and intrigued.
Anne is looking to marry for money to save her home and family.
Kennedy's preference is not to marry at all. Instead he is looking for at best a long affair.
They meet when Anne and her friend stay overlong at a balk and end up at what is known as the Midnight Ball where men come to squire mistresses, not wives.
The following day after Anne gives him a set down, Kennedy's father calls him to make the demand that he marry now. He threatens him with marrying his younger sister to a man who is known to have killed his previous wife.
Although Anne is not the woman he would have as a wife, circumstances dictate a different scenario.
I gave this book 4.5 of 5.0 stars for storyline and characterization and a sensual rating of 2.75 of 5.0 flames.
Anne is untouched and Kennedy doesn't want to follow his father's dictate that he immediately get his wife with child.

Sweet and engaging read. The characters were well developed and the story was well written.

A delightful short story, the plot is very well paced & the characters have depth, which isn’t easy to do in a novella. There’s a kidnapping, misunderstandings & romance. I read the story in a sitting & look forward to more novellas in the Marriage Maker series

My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

I voluntarily read an Advance Review Copy of this book through Netgalley. The story revolves around a father’s manipulating his son to marry and produce a heir by threatening to marry his daughter to a man rumored to have beaten his first wife to death. Kennedy marries Anne and in the end comes to love her. The book is a good read and I would recommend it.

A delightful quick read historical romance. While the plot is nothing new, the story is endearing all the same. The lead characters are likable and their actions make sense. Anne is a strong female lead in a time era where women weren’t allowed to be strong. Overall the story is enjoyable although, sometimes in these stories, the antagonist feels like a caricature. It is hard to imagine someone behaving in such an abominable way, but this is another time, another place so it is difficult to truly gauge.

I hadn’t read the previous entry in the series, but this didn’t end up being a problem for me as the author has crafted a story that stands perfectly well on its own.
Anne, Viscountess Kinsely, must marry to save her family’s estates. Risking everything by going to Lady Peddington’s School for Young Ladies, Anne is dismayed when rumours circulate destroying her hopes of marriage.
Kennedy Douglas, Viscount Buchanan, despises his father and will do anything to hurt him. His father, lying in his death bed creates a cunning plan to ensure his son cooperates with his wishes. Kennedy has a week to marry or he will marry Kennedy’s sister to an abusive man. Trapped, Kennedy agrees and follows the matchmaker’s suggestion that Lady Kinsely would be a good match.
This is a novella and the story does suffer because of the shortness. The author crafted well rounded and likeable characters. The interactions between the protagonists is steamy but the relationship does not have enough time to develop. The story ends abruptly and suddenly the characters are in love. I would have given the book a much higher rating if the story had been fleshed out more.

Anne has to marry someone rich, and quickly, in order to save her family's home, something which becomes a whole lot harder when vicious rumours circulate about her meaning no man would want her as his wife. Kennedy has to marry and produce an heir just as quickly in order to save his sister from wherever his father had stashed her and ideally it has to be someone desperate his father would approve of.

Marriage of convenience time! I love this trope and this was done really nicely, giving a good explanation about why the two of them have to marry so soon and setting it up for lots of fun misunderstandings and a growing relationship between Anne and Kennedy. We can see how they are both family-orientated people who are attracted to each other, though they don't realise it at first, and are well-suited for another. I liked Anne's family being involved, especially her younger sister.

Scott set this trope up really nicely and I was prepared to watch Anne and Kennedy slowly fall for each other as they go to rescue Kennedy's sister but, unfortunately, that was not to happen. The ending was rushed and the middle was nonexistent. Declarations of love came out of nowhere and the finding and rescue of Rose seemed to be far quicker than I would have liked. After such a promising beginning with great characters and a nice setup of a romance, it was such a disappointment.

Love love loved this. It's dramatic, suspenseful and captivating. It waz exciting to read. I enjoyed the characters and their histories, the storyline as well as twists and surprises. Great read. Can't wait for more

I quite liked "A Marriage of Necessity". It was kind of short but was good nonetheless. The characters were unique. The historical feel of the book was written quite nicely. Overall a highly recommended book to all historical romance lovers.

This is the fourth book in the series. It can be read as a stand alone book. But it does make you want to read the others. It was a quick read. I read it in one sitting. Would recommend.

This was a fast-paced, interesting read, that I found I did not want to put down! The story is fresh, original and exciting with a cast of characters that are realistic, complex, easy to like and even easy to hate!. Everything you could want in a historical romance and more.
