About Yankee: Robb Sagendorph founded Yankee Magazine in September 1935 as a New England-centric magazine “for Yankee readers, by Yankee writers, and about Yankeedom.” Its “destiny” would be “the expression and... preservation of that great culture into which every Yank was born and by which every real Yank must live.” Today Yankee boasts nearly 300,000 subscribers and the company is still family-owned. In addition to Yankee, they also publish the Old Farmer’s Almanac and New Hampshire Magazine.

I think that the best way to speak for this guide would be to tell this honest truth - I didn't event get through the first chapter before I had to go and fill out a to-do list of places to visit in Connecticut, which is the very state I grew up and continue to live in. There's no doubt about it, this is a wonderful guide that is fantastically filled to bursting with sites to see, things to do and places to eat. It has something for literally everybody, no matter which of the six New England states.you find yourself in.

Yankee's has put together over 400 essential things to see and do in New England. Even though I have lived in New England my whole life, I know that there is still TONS I have yet to see and do so I was interested to read this book and see how I rate on what I've already done and what fun and adventurous things are still out there to do! (And maybe get some fun not too far date ideas?) For those of you who are geographically challenged (and I am, but I'd probably never have graduated if I didn't figure out what was New England) New England consists of Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island. All of which I have visited at some point (and all but Vermont I have seen a Hanson show in. Fun fact.) The book is broken down by state, with my state, Connecticut, up first.

Growing up in New England, if you look at a map of the country, you may very well become aware that the entirety of New England fits inside many other states. For that reason, it gets to be hard to remember there's so many amazing things to see and do here. I found myself making a list of day trips that could easily be done to go and see so many of these things for the first time, but also to re-visit places I've been as a child. I would definitely give this book to either someone who's visiting New England for the first time, or who's been living here forever and has started saying "But there's nothing to do in New England..."

I have not had an opportunity to visit this part of the country yet but I am very interested in going there. And when I do visit, I will definitely bring this book with me. It is organized by state, and tells of many things to see and do, and includes their website information as well. I feel like I'm getting information from a family member who lives in the area. It also lists fairs and festivals and when they occur, recommended restaurants as well. I think this book is a great resource for visitors to the New England area and I will be adding a copy to my library!

Hands down the absolute best guide book I've ever had the pleasure of reading. Yankee's New England Adventures is clearly and concisely written, with lovely photos and a list of top places to visit in each state as well as detailed descriptions of many different locations for those looking for the best in local history, food, shopping and the arts. I'm making all sorts of travel plans - my fave has to be the 4-day walking tour of inns in Vermont.! 5 stars!

This visually stunning New England travel guide by Yankee Magazine is exactly what you need to plan your trip to New England. Or if you are a New Englander, it is the perfect resource for planning many-a weekend trip to come. This book has wonderful photos that will make any travel-lover swoon. I love that the guide is broken up by state, and gives a little overview of each state before diving into things to do, see, and eat. It features specific cities, and specific areas that should not be missed. For bigger cities, it also contains a quick guide to food within the metro. Lastly, it includes a list of festivals within each state, listed month-by-month. Overall this is a great, thorough yet pared down guide to New England. I highly recommend if you live in the area or are planning a getaway anytime soon!

I was so excited to see this book up for review! I'm retiring soon and would love to go bumming around through New England one day. This book broken down state by state (so convenient!), lets visitors know where everything worth going to, seeing and eating at are in each state. I put together similar lists when I travel, but it if so nice to have one already arranged to take along. Of course, if time doesn't permit, one can still make up their own list with help from this book! Fun travel book!

Being a proud New Englander, I couldn't resist requesting an ARC of this travel guide. It's full of interesting and off-the-beaten-path recommendations for things to do and places to see in this beautiful region I call home. Each recommendation comes with a little blurb about what makes it special, as well as helpful info like phone numbers and websites. They range from things like local historical sites to art museums to classic lobster shacks.

It's also packed with balmy, gorgeous pictures of New England in the summertime and fall--really, New England at its best. Notice how no one ever posts pictures of New England in winter slush mode, which is the other half of the year.

To mix it up, there's also spotlights on certain attractions that are representative of each region, like lighthouses or clam bakes, where they aggregate similar recommendations from all over the state. Especially fun for me is the events page for each state by month. Things like fall state fairs and niche festivals that I've never heard of are fun to track in a calendar format, and I'm sure I'll be referring to these pages again.

The recommendations themselves are a good mix of touristy and local. I've lived in Connecticut for years and was familiar with a lot, but not all of the recs. I also consider Portland, Maine a second home, and agreed with most of the food recommendations (not Eventide though. Don't go there!). I've never read Yankee Magazine, but from what I've seen in this book, it seems like the target audience is older adults, so don't expect to find a lot of recs in here if you're a student trying to travel on a budget.

Overall, a fun travel guide that makes a good companion if you're a tourist doing a road trip through New England or a great coffee table reference if you're a local.

Thank to Editors of Yankee Magazine, Rowman & Littlefield, Globequot, and Netgalley for the advanced reader copy of “Yankee's New England Adventures: Over 400 Essential Things to See and Do” for an honest review.

My life has always been this interesting treatise to a love of New England. The only child of my family to be born and still living in Texas, my maternal family has been spread from Michigan through Maine for all of my life, and while the lion share of my life has been spent in Texas, I have been taking trips to New England for Christmas, Fall, Summers off and on since before I can remember (and I continue it currently, with trips to Massachusetts still for family and friends).

As such, it was impossible not to request this guide when I saw it slide across the options for review in upcoming months. It riddled with recommendations for off-the-beaten-path, whole-in-the-wall, long-time-favorites, in all the corners of New England you could wish to delve in to.

The guides is helpfully broken down with each state (Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont), and then even further in every section going into Essentials, Spotlights, and Top Events. I will definitely be getting myself a copy of this, half for the love of the area and half for the novelty of probably bothering my family to go say any number of things the next few times I’m up there.

Yankees New England Adventures is a lovely book for those that live in New England (like myself) and wonder what fun or beautiful things they might have missed over the years, and for those planning a visit. I am glad to say that I have visited most of the listed locations for my home state, and a good number of the locations in the others. I enjoyed seeing the photographs and reading the practical and succinct descriptions of locations that are familiar to me, and some that I have yet to visit. While not all of the information is absolutely correct, for instance Sleeping Giant State Park is still mostly closed- but who involved in publishing this book could have predicted a crazy tornado hitting Connecticut and causing the amount of damage it did to the area. However, I still think this is a great resource for planning a day trip or staycation if you are local, or a lovely time away for those coming from further away. I enjoyed the information and images, and the ideas the read gave me about where I can drag my family the next time I get the urge to explore.
