Description

The leadership principles in this book are important to the long-term success of our businesses. Whatever our business, we are in a people business and relationships matter greatly. It's our people, the people doing the work of our companies, who satisfy our clients and produce our results. As leaders, our focus must be our people - their development, growth and wellbeing - and their success. Unfortunately, in today's business world, we are way too busy. It seems everyone is. There is so much information coming at us, virtually continuously, and many leaders simply are not out of their offices, alongside their people, in conversations with their people, asking how they are doing, and for their ideas, and letting them know they are appreciated. Leadership is so important, never more so than today, with the unending push to do more and more, so many people having more work than they can do in a workday, and the mounting levels of stress our people are feeling. Highly effective leadership saves everyone time and improves our organizational culture, and ultimately the spirit of our people. What is more important? Happy employees do better work! A theme of this book is that good leaders have the humility to want to become even better.

Numerous important leadership principles and qualities are discussed, including organizational culture, active listening, asking for help, the importance of feedback, striving for continuous improvement is a path to success, humility, kindness is motivating, grace in leadership, integrity, helping people succeed, professional development, the rising undue and unhealthy stress, spirituality can be a benefit, 360 leadership assessments, culture assessments, the need for clarity of goals and expectations, having the difficult conversations, addressing problems promptly, being early, respecting people's time, efficient meetings, helping introverts who may have the best ideas, walking the halls, connecting with our people, servant leadership, productive working relationships, what a healthy company looks like, establishing trust, women and diversity in leadership, leadership is a gift, conversations are the work of a leader, leadership is one conversation at a time, the importance of stay interviews.

Nightly news is a frequent and unfortunate reminder of the shortfalls in leadership that our country is currently experiencing. John Keyser’s book, When Leadership Improves, Everyone Wins, is then not only timely but practical and credible as well. His pinpoint analysis of where problems lie and his thoughtful Rx is that of a seasoned executive and counselor. Keyser’s resume bespeaks a lifelong career of working in the trenches with a wide variety of clients who variously reflect the good, fair, and the not-so-good of corporate H.R.

For those desiring to make their organizations all that they can be, the 160 or so pages is organized and flows in a way that makes for easy and rewarding reading. In contrast to a number of similar works of this nature which are heavy in theory and description, most valuable is John showing how his words of wisdom might be profitably implemented. - Robert Klein, Butzel Long Tighe Patton, PLLC

“John Keyser provides an insightful and inspiring guide to how to be a principled leader. Keyser shows how leaders can shape their culture, and have a profound effect on employees they lead. He demonstrates the value of leaders’ adopting a mindset of serving employees. John shows how culture is tied to business success, and how leaders’ actions make a difference – to employees and the organization’s business.” – Christine Porath, PHD, Renown Author and Speaker, Ted Talk, Professor of Management

“When Leadership Improves, Everybody Wins is not just another leadership book. John Keyser illuminates subtle leadership skills that affect the core of an organization, and he provides a guide for how to cultivate these skills in leaders of all levels. Any professional who takes, practices, and masters John’s advice will be personally enriched and provide tremendous value to their colleagues.” – Amanda Doyle, KIPP Foundation
